“…Something isn’t right here…” one of the other Trial Disciples wearily surveyed his surroundings. “Why are there no Demon Beasts in a place that should be infested with them…? Something like this usually only happens when a—”

“Stronger Demon Beast is born.”

“???” “!?!?”

The group of five were all alerted by the spine-tingling screech that carried through the burnt leaves of the barren forest. They had never heard anything like it, but were astonished to hear that exact same screech echo out in four other directions.

“Quick, get into formation!” Chen Xiao clambered to his orders. “The Demon Beasts are here!”

Bai Ning’s icy eyes narrowed as her grip tightened around the light blue sword she kept by her waist.

Something within her was afraid of whatever produced those bone-chilling screeches. But with her special ice constitution physique, she believed she still had a chance against them—

SPURT!

Eyes widened in horror as everyone in the small group of Trial Disciples watched the head of a young man get blasted into bits. Chunks of blood and brain matter splattered the area, highlighting the horrific appearance of a scaly bipedal lizard with five rows of wickedly sharp teeth.

The young man he pushed couldn’t correct his positioning in time and was directly slashed by the sharp claws of a Lizardcobra. As blood gushed, that Lizardcobra—as well as one other—stayed behind to eat their meal while he was still warm and alive.

“H-How could you do this, Young Master…!? Yo-You bast— Ahhh!!!”

The shrill screams of the young man rang out for a while before abruptly coming to an end.

Everyone in the fleeing party wore terrible expressions, all keeping their distance from the one who sacrificed one of their own.

“I-I had to do it! Don’t you understand!?” Chen Xiao’s face turned red as he angrily defended himself. “If I hadn’t done that, then there would be even more of those things chasing us right no—”

Before he could finish those words, Lizardcobras blurred forward. They caught the Young Master in a pincer move, one coming from the bottom right, with the other taking the top left side.

Reacting as quickly as he could, Chen Xiao raised his arms, protecting his vitals.

But that mattered very little when there were two of them.

Although Chen Xiao successfully defended against the first Lizardcobra, the second one took advantage of the situation and slipped around the seriously injured Young Master. With one merciless slash of its claws, his entire backside was torn open, blood flying everywhere.
