Chapter 409: Heroine’s Husband with Assistent III
After Lucan and Katie showered in the tiny office bathroom and got dressed, they headed off to the update office. One of the first things on the list was going to be a larger, more comfortable sofa, preferably one that folds into a bed.
Lucan adjusted the cuffs of his freshly pressed shirt as he walked beside Katie, the sharp tap of her heels echoing through the store’s pristine aisles. The furniture showroom smelled faintly of polished leather and wood, the warm lighting casting a soft glow over an array of modern and classic designs. Katie looked striking as always, her tailored suit hugging her curves just enough to remain professional yet undeniably alluring. Her hair was neatly styled, and the slight sway of her hips as she walked was impossible to ignore.
“We need something practical,” Lucan said, glancing at Katie, who was already running her fingers over the edge of a sleek leather armchair. “Comfortable enough for the office but versatile.”
Katie smirked, her eyes flicking up to meet his. “By practical, you mean something that doesn’t look like you’ll be napping on it every other day?”
Lucan chuckled, shaking his head. “It’s for those long nights working late. You know how demanding this job can be.”
Katie raised an eyebrow. “Oh, I thought it was for us to have fun but now I know that job is more demanding than me.”
Before Lucan replay, The saleswoman approached a sharp-dressed woman in her mid-thirties with brown hair tied into a polished bun and an overly knowing look in her hazel eyes. She greeted them with a professional smile.
“Good afternoon,” the saleswoman said, her gaze lingering briefly on Lucan before darting to Katie, appraising her head to toe. “What can I help you with today?”
“We’re looking for a sofa,” Lucan began, his voice calm and measured. “Something comfortable, preferably one that folds into a bed. For the office,” he added quickly, though he noticed the faint quirk of her lips at the last part.
“Of course, for the office,” the saleswoman said smoothly, her tone laced with amusement. “Let me show you what we have.” She gestured for them to follow, her heels clicking confidently against the polished floor.
As they walked, Katie leaned closer to Lucan and whispered, “She doesn’t believe you, you know. That ‘office’ excuse didn’t land.”
Lucan smirked but said nothing, his hands sliding casually into his pockets.
The saleswoman led them to a section showcasing fold-out sofas. She gestured to the first one, a modern design with clean lines and neutral upholstery. “This one is very popular,” she said, smoothing a hand over the fabric. “It folds out easily into a bed, but I’ll be honest—” She paused, her gaze locking onto Lucan. “The sleep quality isn’t the best.”
Katie hid a smile behind her hand, but Lucan caught the slight shake of her shoulders.
“Sleep quality, huh?” Lucan said, arching an eyebrow. “I’m sure we’ll manage.”
The saleswoman’s lips twitched. “Well, it’s important to consider. Especially if you’ll be using it… frequently.” Her eyes darted to Katie, and there it was again—that subtle, knowing glance. Katie met her gaze head-on, her chin lifting slightly as if to say, I see what you’re doing.
The saleswoman moved on, showing them several other options, but her commentary remained the same. “This one is comfortable, but again, not ideal for long-term sleep. And this one…” She trailed off, sighing dramatically as she patted the armrest. “Great for sitting, but the mattress is quite firm. Not exactly… inviting.”
Lucan exchanged a glance with Katie, who was biting her lip to keep from laughing. He couldn’t tell if the saleswoman was genuinely concerned about the furniture or deliberately teasing them, but either way, it was becoming increasingly clear they weren’t going to find what they needed here.
Finally, the saleswoman stopped in front of the last sofa in the section. “This one’s better,” she said, almost reluctantly. “But honestly, if you’re looking for something more… discreet, have you considered a short-term lease on a furnished apartment?”
Lucan blinked. “A furnished apartment?”
The saleswoman nodded, her expression turning serious for the first time. “Yes. There’s one available in my building. Very private. You can access it through an underground parking garage, so there’s no need to worry about anyone seeing you come and go. It’s… convenient.” She let the word hang in the air, her hazel eyes sparkling with implication.
Lucan tilted his head, considering. It wasn’t a bad idea. The thought of having a private space, away from prying eyes, was appealing, “That’s… an interesting suggestion,” he admitted. “Do you have the details?”
The saleswoman pulled a business card from her pocket and handed it to him. “Here’s the contact information for the property manager. I can set up a viewing for you if you’d like.”
Lucan took the card, slipping it into his wallet. “Thanks. I’ll think about it.”
As they walked back toward the entrance, Katie fell into step beside him, her arms crossed over her chest. “So,” she said, her tone teasing, “what do you think about her little suggestion?”
“I think it’s practical,” Lucan said, keeping his voice neutral. “A furnished apartment could be useful for late nights.”
Katie raised an eyebrow. “Oh, is that what we’re calling it now? Useful?”
Lucan smirked. “What else would you call it?”
Katie rolled her eyes but couldn’t suppress her grin. “You do know she was checking you out the whole time, right?”
Lucan laughed, a deep, genuine sound that made Katie smile despite herself. “Well, I am a handsome middle-aged man,” he said, his tone mockingly arrogant. “There are plenty of women after me, after all.”

Katie shook her head, her laughter soft and melodic. “You’re impossible, Mr. Lucan.”
On the way out, they finalized the purchase of a sleek leather sofa and a pair of matching chairs. As they loaded the receipt into the car, Lucan glanced at Katie. “So, about that apartment… You’re okay with it?”
Katie shrugged, her smile turning playful. “As long as it’s private, Mr. Lucan. You know how I feel about keeping things discreet.”
Lucan nodded, his expression thoughtful. “Discreet, of course. But I don’t mind if people know, Katie. It’s not like I have anything to hide.”
Katie’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before she recovered. “Yes, but it’s better if my family don’t know… I have lot of uncle, aunts, cousins… I don’t want them to know.”
Lucan didn’t press her further.
—
Lucan parked the car in a quiet street outside the apartment building. It was as pristine as Margeta, the saleswoman, had described. The sleek, modern architecture, paired with a discrete entrance to the parking garage tucked along the side street, exuded a blend of luxury and privacy. He glanced at Katie, who sat beside him, her eyes alight with curiosity as she took in the building’s elegant facade.
“This is it,” Lucan said, stepping out of the car. Katie followed, smoothing her skirt as she exited.
“It looks… perfect,” Katie murmured, “Nobody I know would ever think to look for me here.”
“That’s the idea,” Lucan replied with a faint smirk. “Privacy is key.”
Together, they walked into the building and headed to the manager’s office. The manager, a polite, middle-aged man in a tailored suit, greeted them warmly.
“Would it be alright if you took a look at the apartment on your own? I got another appointment.”
“Of course.”
“Then here’s the key. Take your time.”
“Thank you,” Lucan said, pocketing the key.
They rode the elevator up to the 23rd floor in silence, the soft hum of the machinery accompanying the gentle sway of the lift. Katie glanced at Lucan, her lips curving into a small.
When they reached the apartment, Lucan unlocked the door and pushed it open. The two of them stepped inside, and Katie let out a soft gasp.
The apartment was immaculate. Sunlight poured through floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the tastefully furnished living room. Plush sofas, a sleek coffee table, and a subtle but romantic decor gave the space an air of sophistication. Lucan walked further in, taking in the details—the polished wooden floors, the high-end finishes, the delicate balance of luxury and warmth.
Katie moved from room to room, her heels clicking softly against the hardwood floor. She opened closets, ran her fingers along countertops, and peeked into every corner with the enthusiasm of someone discovering a hidden treasure.
“Mr. Lucan, this place is incredible,” she called from the kitchen, her voice echoing slightly in the open space. “Whoever lived here before must’ve had impeccable taste.”
Lucan followed her voice, his hands in his pockets. “It’s perfect for what we need. Comfortable, private, and… adaptable.”
Katie turned to him, raising an eyebrow. “Adaptable?”
“You’ll see,” he said with a knowing smile.
They eventually made their way to the bedroom. The centerpiece was a massive king-sized bed, dressed in soft linens that invited indulgence. Katie’s eyes widened slightly as she took in the room’s ambiance—the dim lighting, the subtle fragrance of lavender lingering in the air, the overall sense of intimacy.
“This bed,” Katie murmured, running her hand across the duvet, “is built for… possibilities.”
Lucan chuckled softly. “Exactly what I was thinking.”
Pulling out his phone, he dialed the manager. “Hi, it’s Lucan. I’ll take it. Can we finalize everything in your office now?”
After a brief exchange, Lucan hung up. “Stay here,” he told Katie. “I’ll be right back.”
Katie nodded, her expression playful. “Don’t take too long. I have… plans.”
Lucan shot her a curious glance but didn’t press her further. He left to meet the manager, signed the paperwork, and received an additional set of keys. On his way back to the apartment, he couldn’t help but wonder what Katie had in mind.
When he stepped back inside, the apartment was unusually quiet. He called out, “Katie?”
Her voice came from the bedroom. “Stay in the living room! Don’t come in until I tell you.”
Lucan paused, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “What are you up to?” he asked, leaning casually against the wall.
“You’ll see,” Katie replied, her tone light but mischievous. “Now, take off your clothes.”
Lucan blinked. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me,” Katie called laughter threading through her voice. “Take off your clothes first. And then come into the bedroom. I’ve got a surprise for you.”
Lucan shook his head, amused. “A surprise, huh? Should I be concerned?”
Katie’s laugh echoed through the apartment. “You’ll love it. Trust me.”
Lucan stood in the living room, unbuttoning his shirt and slipping it off as rest of his clothes.
