Chapter 121: Change in Command
Ethan frowned.
All this over a gym worth just two million? Why go through so much trouble?
Was this Leon guy that desperate for money?
If Leon knew what Ethan was thinking, he’d probably explode in rage. Just two million? What kind of absurd logic was that? Did he think two million was that easy to make?
Ethan himself had kind of lost touch with reality. Ever since he was reborn, he’d been raking in hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands of gold in-game. When converted to real world currency, the money flooded in so fast that he started believing making money was just that simple.
In truth, for most people, two million was a fortune, enough to work a lifetime for.
Take Victor, for example. After leaving the military, he barely made a few grand a month. Williams drove a cab and wasn’t making much either. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be living in an illegal rooftop shack.
At that moment, Leo held up his phone. “Ethan, I recorded everything he said. This can be used as evidence, right?”
Ethan glanced at him and shook his head. “If we hadn’t attacked the cops, maybe. It’d be enough to file a report, but now, this recording isn’t going to do much.”
After saying that, he turned to Len. “This Leon guy… who is he?”
Len quickly responded, “I’m not sure. I don’t run with him, but I’ve heard he’s pretty tight with Commissioner Joe’s son.”
“Which Commissioner Joe?”
“The Commissioner. The head of the police department,” Len said.
Ah. So that’s why. No wonder when Quinn called the cops earlier, they didn’t show up for over an hour.
“Attention! You are surrounded! Release the hostages and surrender immediately!”
A booming voice came from outside.
Victor, watching the security monitors from behind the bar, saw that the crowd outside had been cleared out.
Four SWAT vans had pulled up, dozens of officers already geared up and ready to storm in.
“Ethan, what now?” Williams asked.
“Fight—” Leo started, but before he could finish, Ethan cut him off.
“Fight who? You already punched a cop, and now you want to take on SWAT? You really think you won’t get your head blown off the second you make a move?”
Leo grumbled. Of course, he knew Ethan was right, but still… “So we just surrender? Damn it. If there’s one thing I learnt while in the army, surrendering is for cowards.”
“Yeah,” Williams nodded in agreement.
Just then, Ethan’s phone buzzed. He pulled it out, glanced at the message, and raised an eyebrow.
Meanwhile, Victor was still watching the monitors.
“They’re moving in,” he said.
Ethan took a deep breath. “Open the gate.”
The three of them froze.
“Ethan—”
“Just do it.” Ethan sighed.

Seeing them hesitate, Quinn, shaking in fear, curled up in the corner. Ethan stepped forward and pressed the switch himself.
The metal shutter slowly rolled up. Ethan stood at the entrance. Outside, three riot shields came into view, advancing steadily.
At the same time, Ethan was completely exposed. Instantly, every gun locked onto him.
A chill ran down his spine. He instinctively lifted his gaze, up high, a sniper’s barrel was aimed dead center at his forehead.
Ethan stepped out of the gym. Two SWAT officers rushed forward, ready to subdue him. He glanced at them but didn’t resist. Didn’t struggle.
The two officers grabbed Ethan’s arms, twisting hard, but nothing happened. They frowned, applied more force and still, he didn’t budge.
One of them, frustrated, reached for his gun and raised it, ready to strike Ethan across the back of the head.
Ethan turned his gaze toward him, his expression calm.
“Ninth Division is handling this. If you hit me, I guarantee you’ll be turning in your badge by tomorrow.”
The officer froze, a flicker of uncertainty flashing in his eyes. Ethan immediately picked up on it, this guy clearly had no idea what the Ninth Division was.
Damn. That complicated things.
“I need to speak with your Captain,” Ethan said. “Tell him we’re with the Ninth Division. This is a classified case, and we’re handling it.”
The SWAT officers exchanged glances. After a brief moment, one of them gave a slight nod before turning and jogging toward the armored vehicle.
Not long after, a man, fully geared but without a helmet, around Victor’s age—walked over.
He studied Ethan’s face for a moment before speaking in a low voice. “You’re saying you’re with Ninth Division?”
Ethan didn’t reply. He just nodded.
“Where’s your ID? And what exactly did these guys do? Also—” the Captain’s tone sharpened as he gestured toward the officers lying on the ground, “—even if you’re Ninth Division, you can’t just go around roughing up cops, can you?”
Ethan frowned, glancing back at the unconscious officers.
Yeah. Just as he thought.
As he considered how to respond, a sharp, commanding female voice cut through the tense air.
“As of today, they are no longer police officers.”
Hearing that voice, Ethan felt a wave of relief. Finally.
Every head turned in the direction of the voice. A woman in full military uniform strode toward them from the perimeter of the secured area.
As she passed two SWAT officers, they immediately snapped to attention, saluting her with precision.
Ethan had never seen Celeste in uniform before. And damn, he had to admit, it looked damn good on her.
She carried a file in one hand, walking straight up to the SWAT Captain and shoving it against his chest.
The man hesitated, glancing at the insignia on her shoulder.
Two stars. One oak leaf.
A Major General?
His body reacted before his brain could catch up, he snapped into a salute.
“All the evidence against them, along with our identification, is in there,” Celeste stated flatly.
She didn’t wait for a response, didn’t even acknowledge the Captain beyond that. Instead, she turned and shot Ethan a glare so sharp it could’ve drawn blood. Then, without another word, she brushed past him and entered the gym.
Ethan let out a quiet chuckle. Saved by Celeste. Again.
That text message he’d received earlier? It was from her, telling him to stall for time because she was on her way.
He had no idea what was in that file, but one thing was clear—they were safe.
Inside the gym, Celeste glanced around before settling her gaze on Leo and Williams.
“You two are something else,” she remarked. “Just the two of you, taking down thirty-plus guys?”
Ethan, trailing behind her, had expected her to start chewing them out. Instead… she sounded impressed?
‘Wait. What?’
Just minutes ago, outside, she had practically lasered him with that death glare. Even Leo and Williams, who had braced themselves for a brutal scolding, were caught off guard.
Was she just acting tough earlier, only to settle the score later?
Celeste smirked. “Relax.”
Then, as if reading their minds, she added, “If you were my subordinates and you didn’t have the guts to fight back, then you’d be unworthy of your positions.”
