Chapter 273: Guild Matters
Sure enough, Celia was there.

She managed a guild of tens of thousands on Ethan’s behalf, juggling countless tasks every day.

Almost every time she logged in, she was stationed at the management hall in the guild headquarters.

She had even built an intelligence network, with informants planted in nearly every major guild.

But what kept her busiest was overseeing the crafting professions.

She had to arrange guards for mining zones, herb gathering fields, and other resource sites. She organized gathering teams, processed payments after collections, and more.

On top of that, she tracked mission teams, reimbursing players for experience and gear losses when they died.

If Ethan had to handle all of this himself, he wouldn’t have time to level up, let alone explore.

—

“Sister Celia!” Ethan called out.

Celia, who had been checking herb quantities, turned around.

When she saw him, she smiled. “Well, look who finally decided to show up—our elusive Guild Leader!”

“Gone so long you’re practically a myth around here. What brings you back now?”

Ethan rubbed his nose awkwardly. “Uh… how’s the guild doing? Nothing major happened, right?”

Celia turned back to her work as she replied, “What could possibly happen? In this part of Harmony City, who would dare mess with your Renegade Alliance?”

“Just the usual friction between our members and other guilds.”

Though she said it playfully, Ethan could see the pride shining in her eyes. She was just as proud of their guild as he was.

“However…” she added, setting down her checklist and turning to face him, “I got word that Leaf Guild’s been having some trouble lately.”

The mention of Leaf Guild stirred Ethan’s memory—they were once hired by Blade Syndicate to help grind out dungeon points. After Ethan’s world-first kill in the level 25 dungeon, that group had a falling-out with Marcus Skeiner.

Leafshade had led his team out of Blade Syndicate, only for Marcus to drag their reputation through the mud afterward.

Business had dried up for them completely.

“So, are they disbanding because they’re broke?” Ethan asked.

Celia shook her head. “They’re already disbanded. Leafshade’s gone. The vice-captain, Leafen, took over and renamed the guild—it’s now called Leafen Guild.”

“Leafshade resigned? Leafen’s in charge? Leafen Guild?” Ethan repeated, frowning as a suspicion took root.

Celia clearly knew what he was thinking—she had the same suspicion. “Yeah. We don’t know the full story yet,” she said. “But I’ve already sent someone to get in touch with Leafshade. If we can bring him into Renegade Alliance…”

Ethan nodded. Smart move. Leafshade’s experience alone would be a huge asset in clearing new dungeons.

And there was no way Leafshade had left alone. Some skilled players had definitely followed him.

If they could recruit that whole crew, Renegade Alliance’s elite team would be even stronger.

Level 45 was around the corner, and with it, Ethereal’s first 300-player raid dungeon.

Even for Ethan, clearing it before any nerfs would be a major challenge.

“All done—returning your alt,” Morzan said suddenly in Ethan’s ear.

Ethan acknowledged the message.

Just as he was about to take his leave, a thought struck him. “Oh, right. Sister Celia, about that girlfriend you introduced to Mad Engineer… Who is she?”

Celia had just turned away but froze mid-step.

She turned back with a wry smile. “Don’t listen to his nonsense.”

“You know that high school senior who cleans our gym in the mornings? The one working part-time?”

Ethan furrowed his brows, thinking for a moment. Then he remembered. He’d only met her once—he’d asked if she wanted to switch shifts with Jade Taylor, but she’d declined.

“Yeah, I remember. You didn’t actually introduce her to Mad Engineer, did you? She seems really young—barely an adult.”

“She’ll be eighteen in a few days,” Celia said. “Her family situation is a bit complicated, but we’ve filed all the necessary paperwork. We’re not employing a minor.”

Then her expression shifted, her tone sharpening. “And I didn’t introduce her to him. Introduce? Don’t get me started!”

She actually cursed, startling Ethan. His curiosity was piqued.

“What happened?” he asked.

Celia’s eyes flashed with anger. “I looked into her background. She lives with her father—just the two of them.”

“Her mom ran off when she was two months old. Her dad used to be a taxi driver, made decent money… until an accident last year. Now he’s bedridden.”

As she spoke, a wave of old memories hit Ethan like a truck. In his past life, he’d spent three years confined to a bed. He knew that helpless feeling all too well.

He stayed quiet, letting her continue.

“So I gave the girl a VR headset,” Celia said. “Figured she could log into Ethereal at night and help me out a little.”

“But she got lucky. While running an alchemy quest, she stumbled on a hidden profession.”

“It’s similar to Mad Engineer’s—super high failure rate, but with the potential to make mutated potions.”

“I thought, great! They could exchange notes. And since he has your crafting badge, she could level up faster.”

“I told him I was introducing him to someone to collaborate with—nothing romantic. But he didn’t seem interested.”

“You weren’t around, and I figured he just didn’t want to lend out the badge, so I told him I’d vouch for her.”

“Then I sent the girl to find him.”

“She went over two days in a row and never came back… Now she hides in the guild’s alchemy room all day.”

Now Ethan understood.

So this wasn’t Celia introducing Mad Engineer to a girlfriend.

He had developed a one-sided crush and totally misunderstood the situation.

At seventeen, he was right in the middle of puberty—of course he got excited around a pretty girl.

Ethan shook his head, speechless. He said goodbye to Celia and left the guild headquarters.

He made his way to a known respawn point just outside the city.

He clicked: Summon Avatar.

Whoosh…

His alt appeared instantly.

Before Ethan could react, the alt went straight into Stealth and struck with Cheap Shot.

Ethan was incapacitated for one full minute.

Then came Ambush, stunning him again just as the first effect ended.

The alt spun behind him, flawlessly positioning for a Backstab to the neck.

Backstab!

Ethan’s energy points were full.

He knew what was coming next.

Finishing move—full-point Rend!
