Chapter 96: The Target
To Ethan’s surprise, they weren’t stopped. The car sailed smoothly past the checkpoint and onto the freeway.
Once again, he found himself stunned by Lyla’s father’s influence.
He had seen the traffic officers checking his car, speaking into their radios, clearly verifying its details. Ethan had been sure they’d be pulled over. He had even considered suggesting to Lyla, Maybe we should swap cars?
After all, he had enough money to buy another one, it was just the paperwork that would take time.
Worst case? They could ditch the car and take the Bullet Express instead. It’d be faster and way less exhausting. Because if there was one downside to the Predator Beast X, it was that driving it was a workout.
The sheer size of the thing made handling a nightmare.
—
“They’re on Interstate 715.”
Unbeknownst to Ethan and Lyla, a black sedan trailed them at a distance. Inside, a scruffy-looking man held a phone to his ear, relaying every detail of their movements.
“Find an opportunity to take him out. Make it clean, an accident would be best.”
A cold voice came through the receiver.
“Understood, Boss. But… taking him out on the freeway won’t be easy. That car? Even if it collided with a tanker truck, it’d probably come out without a scratch.”
“Hmph. Predator Beast X, huh? Didn’t think that girl had this kind of backing. Figure it out, but don’t harm her.”
“Got it, Boss.”
The man hung up, his eyes locking onto the beast of a vehicle ahead. This job was going to be tricky.
There was no way a regular college student should be driving a car like that. His employer had told him the guy was just some freeloader, but he wasn’t buying it.
With the kind of power that girl’s family had, would they really let a nobody leech off her?
Would they allow him to live under the same roof?
If that were true, and the family didn’t approve, the guy would’ve vanished long ago.
The man wasn’t stupid.
He had been in this line of work long enough to know, if you’re still alive, you’re not an idiot.
He carefully calculated his next move.
Meanwhile, Ethan and Lyla remained blissfully unaware. They had no idea someone was already plotting against them.
Ethan certainly didn’t expect Zachary to have traced his identity so quickly. In his past life, it had taken much longer, back then, he had been drunk when he accidentally revealed he was the owner of the Wishbound Relic.
That was when Zachary had set him up.
But this time, after just a few encounters in the game, Zachary was already holding a grudge.
He had even pulled strings he wouldn’t have used in the previous timeline just to track down NotADruid’s real-life identity.
And Lyla had no idea that Ethan’s exposure was partially her fault.

Four hours later, they finally exited the freeway. City driving was a nightmare with this car, but on the highway? Pure bliss.
Ethan had flown down the open road, overtaking everything in sight. Even massive trucks had moved aside to let him through.
Before long, they arrived at the address Slashblade had sent them.
Ethan picked up his phone and dialed Skyblade.
“Yo, we’re here.”
“Got it, boss! We’re coming to meet you now.”
They pulled over, and soon enough, a group emerged from the gated community across the street.
At first glance, Ethan immediately spotted Skyblade.
“Is that them?” Lyla asked.
Ethan nodded. The three men approaching them carried themselves like soldiers, it was no wonder Lyla had spotted them instantly.
Other people walked casually, but these three? Backs straight, steps in sync, as if they were still in formation.
Except for Skyblade.
He was just as upright, but something about his posture had a cocky, relaxed swagger that set him apart.
As they stepped out of the gated community, they glanced around before spotting Ethan’s car.
Skyblade visibly froze.
Then, with an exaggerated expression, he mouthed: Holy shit!
Without hesitation, the three of them strode over. Ethan and Lyla stepped out of the car to meet them.
“Boss?” Skyblade looked at Ethan, still stunned.
“Just call me Ethan. Don’t make it sound like some mobster title,” Ethan chuckled.
Skyblade’s eyes flicked to Lyla. “Wait… is this Moonbeam?” His tone was like someone discovering a new continent.
Lyla smiled politely. “I’m Lyla Silverwood, Moonbeam. Nice to meet you.”
“Damn, sis in-law, you’re even prettier than in the game,” Skyblade blurted out.
Lyla blushed slightly, stepping closer to Ethan, unsure how to respond.
Before she could think of something, Skyblade kept going. “Hey, you got any single friends? I’m not picky, face doesn’t matter, just a great body will do! You know, as long as—”
“As long as my ass,” Ethan cut him off swiftly. “Stop calling her sis in law like we’re some married couple.”
He shot a quick glance at Lyla, thankful he hadn’t let Skyblade finish the sentence.
He already knew what he was about to say: As long as the lights are off, it’s all the same.
This guy had zero shame, his mouth ran faster than a speeding train.
“Alright, alright. So what should I call her?” Skyblade said grinning.
“Just Lyla,” she replied, still curious why Ethan had interrupted him.
She studied Skyblade for a moment. He was a good-looking guy with a strong military presence, finding a girlfriend shouldn’t be hard for him.
At that moment, Slashblade stepped forward. “Victor.”
He didn’t say much, but his genuine happiness was clear.
Skyblade suddenly turned and called out, “Hey, Williams, what are you doing?”
Ethan followed his gaze and saw SeraphWarrior staring at the car like he was in love.
Skyblade chuckled. “Ethan, Williams used to be our designated driver back in the day.”
His real name was Kyle Jensen. Back in the army, during basic training, a drill sergeant, notorious for his poor memory, struggled to remember all the new recruits. He’d mistakenly called Kyle Williams after confusing him with another recruit. The name, though incorrect, became a running joke within the unit, and eventually, it stuck.
Hearing his name, Williams quickly snapped out of it and turned to Ethan. “Ethan, is this car legit? Not a custom build? No, wait… even if the body is modified, you’d still get flagged driving this thing.”
“It’s not mine, it’s Lyla’s,” Ethan said casually.
Williams blinked. “Huh? Lyla… uh, mind if I take it for a spin?”
He awkwardly adjusted his glasses before turning to Lyla with hopeful eyes.
Lyla laughed and pulled Ethan aside, making space. “Keys are in the car.”
“Thanks, sis!” Williams hopped in immediately.
“Damn, I’m coming too!” Skyblade shouted, rushing in after him.
Victor, watching them, smiled apologetically at Ethan and Lyla. “They haven’t been out of the military for long. It’s been a while since they’ve touched a machine like this.”
“It’s fine. Let them have fun,” Lyla said with a grin. “Let’s go check on the bride!”
Victor hesitated for a second, his face slightly awkward.
