Chapter 268: The Cult (38)
The tremor on the walls of the confinement ended once the door appeared, surprising everyone.
“There was a door?”
“I have been here for more than a year and I never knew there was a door in that location.”
“If we had our original strength, does that mean we would’ve been able to break ourselves out and escape?”
Different speculations floated across the confinement the moment the door appeared.
The next seconds saw the door creaking open slowly, and the entire confinement became eerily silent.
No one dared to speak or even move.
They simply stared at the door with one question — what would walk through that door? Their rescue or their death?
The door opened completely, revealing the strangers outside.
A graceful man with long white hair tied in a ponytail, carrying a graceful presence, was the first to step inside. Followed by a middle-aged man dressed in blood-stained rags and a group of eight men dressed in gold and red knight’s armor.
The appearance of these people spelled out nothing sinister, unlike the cultists they had grown accustomed to over time.
Some of the captives even noticed the small crest of the Aurorahaven Kingdom on the chestplate of the spy knight’s armor.
“They are knights of the Castle of Might! We’re safe!”
“We are safe!”
“Waaaaa! I can finally go back home!”
The crowd soon erupted into emotional cries as they realized they had been rescued.
At the back, Riela instantly recognized D’andre and Dragun, her eyes widened excitedly as she stood up from the swimming pool, water dripping from her robe. Without a single care in the world, she began sprinting towards Dragun while tears fell from her eyes, clearly excited to see him alive.
She hugged Dragun tightly, not caring about the bloodstains on his clothes and body.
Eliman and Rowan also joined the others in their rejoicing, but in reserved manners, only smiling and strolling out of the pool they had been caged in for a long time.
Eliman was curious about Rowan’s relationship with Dragun after seeing his wife hug him, she speculated that he was Rowan’s father-in-law due to his magic cultivation rank.
“You are so good at making wrong assumptions, can’t you see the resemblance? He is my father for crying out loud, why do you love judging everything based on magical talents and ranks?”
Rowan was a little bit annoyed.
Eliman apologized with an embarrassed expression.
He had a strong urge to share a part of his past that had made him that way with Rowan, but quickly decided against it.
Although he considered Rowan his friend after their lengthy conversations, he did not think that sharing such a deep past would be logical as they had known each other for less than forty-eight hours!
Rowan wasn’t really that annoyed about his personality. He could tell from their conversation that Eliman was an honest person.
Not wasting time, Rowan strolled through the jubilant crowds and made his way towards D’andre and Dragun.
Dragun and Riela were still hugging, crying in each other’s embrace. Both of them thought they had lost each other to the cold hands of death, wrought by the cult, but luckily they were still alive. It was natural to be very emotional over it.
“If it ain’t the Lord of Winterseed,” D’andre greeted with a smile when he saw Rowan approaching.
Rowan smiled back and greeted before asking, “I never pictured you as the type to take on rescue missions—or don’t tell me, have you run out of goods to sell?”

D’andre laughed at Rowan’s teasing while mentally questioning whether he was such a flawed character that no one could believe his intentions to rescue others were truly good. Venerable Mario had even asked him the same question when he mentioned he was going to rescue Rowan.
“I did you a great favor by coming to rescue you, now you owe me a favor. I’ll probably charge 50% more the next time we do business.”
“You are serious?” Rowan asked seriously.
“Of course not, haha—look how scared you look.”
D’andre laughed heartily and both of them shook hands like friends who had just seen each other after a very long time.
Seeing the connection between Rowan and D’andre, the spy knights finally understood why he had come here personally to rescue them.
On the other hand, after greeting his buddy, Rowan also proceeded to politely greet and shake hands with the spy knights one after the other, thanking them for sparing their time to rescue them.
Afterwards, Rowan halted in front of Dragun.
Both of them stared at each other in silence for a few seconds, creating an awkward tension between them.
Dragun wore an apologetic look on his face while Rowan had a questioning expression.
That day when they were kidnapped, Xandros revealed that Dragun was part of their cult and, for an unknown reason, Xandros had a beef with him.
Rowan wanted nothing but the entirety of the story—what Dragun was doing in the cult, why he joined, and what he did to incur their anger.
Dragun, on the other hand, knew just what was going on in his son’s mind. He had not only failed as a father but also as a leader, not only did he put his family in danger, he also placed the entire village in jeopardy.
“I will explain all of it when we are out of this place successfully. We need to leave before the higher-ups of the cult return,” Dragun informed.
Rowan shrugged.
The spy knights had already kicked into action a few seconds ago, cutting the jubilation short and asking all the captives to make their way out gently.
They all formed a line, following every order of the spy knights as they made their way out even though they were stronger than them. It was the least they could do to show their appreciation.
Under the jurisdiction of the spy knights, they successfully made their way to the entrance where the exit portal could be seen swirling magically.
Gradually, they strolled out of the portal and into the outside world, experiencing nature and freedom for the first time since they were abducted.
As they stepped into freedom, they became extremely emotional, most of them fell to the ground and began weeping, while some simply stood still and stared at the clouds with peaceful smiles on their faces.
“Finally.”
“The sun, never thought I would one day set my eyes on this splendid inferno ball. So glorious!”
“Trees, clouds, birds. Who would have thought that my major desire for so long was to experience these once again?”
“After such a long time, I would finally get to see my family.”
It was evident on their faces how much they missed nature. Those who had been kept in the facility for a long time felt the most emotions after receiving their freedom.
Even Rowan and Riela, who had barely spent a week inside the facility, were extremely grateful for the natural scene.
The spy knights felt proud of their achievement. They could not help but imagine the praises and rewards they would get from their master after returning.
Unfortunately, fate did not share in their excitement.
Suddenly, a dark cloud resembling the beginning of a storm appeared over the area, and in the next moment a strong wind pressure drifted amidst them, signifying the arrival of a powerful force.
