Chapter 49 “Offer?
What offer?” Grey asked, his curiosity suddenly piqued.
“It’s an interesting one.
I’m sure you won’t be able to resist it,” the man replied with a smile.
“Well, what is it?” Grey asked impatiently.
“I’m Amir, the vice principal of Lunaria Academy and also a squad captain.
I want you to join Lunaria Academy.
This…
your power isn’t something one stumbles across every day.
You’re a one-in-a-million genius, and I want to snatch you up before the others find out,” Amir said confidently.
“Others?
Who are they?” Grey asked.
Amir let out a sigh.
“Young mages and not reading enough…
The others I’m referring to are the other academies and squads.” “There are other academies?” Grey asked, genuinely surprised.
Amir let out a short laugh.
“Did you think there was only one?
If Lunaria Academy were the only one, we’d be drowning in emergency calls.
As you know, we don’t just teach young mages.
Each academy goes out on quests and missions-like the one I was called out for in your town.” “That makes sense,” Grey nodded, slowly piecing things together.
“As you are now, you’re still too young to join.
But I want you to enter in a year’s time.
Every year, the academies come together to hold an assessment for youths like you-to see who’s worthy of joining,” Amir explained.
“So, what’s your answer?” ‘Hmm!’Grey sighed inwardly.
‘That’s a lot to take in.
I really wanted to stay low for now, not expose myself to the world just yet.
But there are too many benefits in what Amir just said.
One of them is these…’ — <Name: Grey Dawn> <Status: Mage> <Mana: 10/55> <Elements: Three> {Wind: 28 | Colour Grade: Blue} {Earth: 35 | Colour Grade: Yellow} {Fire: 30 | Colour Grade: Purple} — ‘My wind affinity has increased after repeated use-it’s definitely stronger now.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
But my fire attribute is still low, probably because I haven’t had many chances to use it.
If I joined the academy, I’d likely get sent on more missions.
That would strengthen all my affinities and help me gain more control over them.
And maybe…
just maybe…
I could unlock another magic,’ he thought, smiling slightly at the idea-something Amir didn’t fail to notice.
‘I can’t believe this kid has three top-tier magical affinities, Amir mused, eyes narrowing slightly with a hidden smirk.
If I get him into Lunaria Academy, it would be a huge advantage for us.
We’d outshine the other squads and gain more favor in the Emperor’s eyes.’ “I have a question, though,” Grey spoke up, pulling Amir from his thoughts.
“My family’s not financially stable-we’re from the lower class.
So how am I supposed to afford participating in this assessment?” “That won’t be an issue.
With my recommendation, you’ll be allowed to take the assessment, no problem,” Amir replied.
“In that case, I accept your offer,” Grey said with a smile.
“Good!
Fabulous!” Amir grinned, and a glowing portal swirled open before him.
“Wait!
What about me?” Grey shouted, and Amir turned back toward him.
“One more thing.
How much do you know about that familiar of yours?” he asked.
“Huh?
You mean Noir?” Grey said, rubbing his chin.
“Not much, to be honest.
We fought, and then it said it wanted to attach itself to me.
Seeing its powers, I accepted on the spot.
It barely talks, so I know nothing-only that it’s incredibly strong.” Amir sighed.
“I figured as much.
Here’s some advice: when you get to the academy gates, make sure it doesn’t show itself.
Or else…” He stepped into the portal, vanishing as it snapped shut behind him.
“Wait!
Or else what?!” Grey shouted, but there was no reply.
“Darn all these powerful mages and their love for suspense!” he yelled.
“Noir!
What was he talking about?
What are you?
And why the hell did you run away when you saw him?” he demanded, but as usual, there was only silence.
“Darn you too, Noir!” he groaned.
With a sigh, Grey looked up.
“I guess I should head home.
Mum must be worried sick.” He began the slow, painful trek back to town.
His body was riddled with bruises and aching cuts, making every step feel like torture.
A journey that would normally take ten minutes stretched into thirty as he frequently stopped to rest or ducked behind trees to avoid wandering beasts.
Finally, he arrived.
The town was nearly unrecognizable.
Only a few people moved about hurriedly, and the destruction was staggering.
Half the houses had been leveled.
The streets were scattered with debris and grief.
He saw people weeping as they gathered the dead.
Some sat beside fallen loved ones, their sorrow too deep to even think of burial.
Back at the battlefield, he saw his mother kneeling and crying.
The little girl she’d saved was beside her, gently patting her back in an attempt to console her.
“Mum?!” he called out, voice raspy.
Clara looked up, eyes wide with disbelief.
“Oh, Grey!
My dear son!” she cried out, rushing forward and pulling him into a tight embrace.
“Ouch, Mum!
I’m in pain!” he yelped.
“Oh!
I’m so sorry!” Clara gasped, releasing him quickly.
Grey exhaled in relief.
“Let’s go home.
I’ll tend to your injuries.” “Sure, Mum,” he smiled weakly.
“Come on, Jesse,” Clara said.
“Jesse?” Grey asked, turning around.
The little girl stood there-timid, quiet, and unsure.
Her…!
Grey’s eyes narrowed dangerously as he glared at Jesse.
Because of her, I almost lost Mum today.
If I didn’t have these powers, she’d be dead right now.
“She…
she can’t-” Grey began, but before he could finish, he collapsed into his mother’s arms, unconscious.
______ {A/N} I hope you all are enjoying the book so far?
For new readers, this is kinda for you.
You might have been seeing a lot of author’s note for so long by now.
Well, it’s because Magus Supremacy is currently going through a heavy editing phase so the app I’m using, reduces my word count at times and hence these notes.
So please, pardon me and move on to the next chapter.
