Chapter 53: Let’s go rescue your son!
Chapter 53 “Welcome, Mage Grey!” Cedric said, his voice warm, his smile broad.
“Cut the pleasantries.
Let’s get straight to the point,” Grey responded sharply, his tone laced with annoyance.
“My time is valuable.
What do you want?” “Hahaha!
You certainly have a bold spirit,” Cedric chuckled, just as a loud knock echoed from the door.
He glanced over his shoulder.
“Who’s there?” Cedric called.
“Dad!
It’s me!” a melodic, feminine voice rang out.
“Oh, Charlotte, come in,” Cedric beckoned.
The door swung open, and a young woman stepped in-her long purple hair flowing behind her like a silken veil.
Her dress, a flowing gown of rich violet, clung elegantly to her figure, and her lips were painted in the same hue.
Her fair skin seemed to glow in the light, flawless and radiant.
With every step, she moved with a grace that commanded attention, as if the very ground beneath her feet had to bow in reverence.
Grey’s mouth almost dropped open at her beauty, but he quickly regained his composure.
It wasn’t necessary anyway-Charlotte hadn’t even glanced his way.
“Dad!
Has your guest arrived?” she asked, standing tall in front of Cedric, her gaze fixed solely on him, completely ignoring Grey.
‘Hmph!
How arrogant.’ Grey thought.
“Yes, he’s right behind you,” Cedric replied, gesturing toward Grey.
Charlotte turned, and her eyes landed on the red-haired figure standing casually with his hands tucked in his pockets.
“Oh!” she said flatly, barely acknowledging his presence, before turning back to her father.
“Do you think he can handle it?
He looks weak to me.” “Don’t judge a book by its cover, Lady Charlotte,” Grey said with a faint smile.
‘What the hell?
Why did I just show her respect when I didn’t even care for her father?’ Grey mentally groaned.

“Don’t mind my daughter, Mage Grey,” Cedric said, raising a hand in apology.
“Please, sit.
Let’s discuss why I brought you here.” Grey took a seat across from Cedric, Charlotte remaining standing beside her father.
Her eyes lingered on him, scrutinizing him like a predator assessing prey.
“Let’s get straight to the point,” Cedric continued.
“I need your help, Grey.” “What kind of help?” Grey asked, his expression neutral.
“I need you to rescue someone important to me-someone who has been kidnapped,” Cedric said, his voice tense.
“How am I supposed to help?” Grey raised an eyebrow.
“You have dozens of mages under your command.
Why not send them?
What can I possibly do?” “True, I have many mages,” Cedric acknowledged, “but none of them are as powerful as you.” “Dad!
We’ve only heard rumors!
That doesn’t mean we should believe all the gossip floating around,” Charlotte chimed in, her voice laced with skepticism.
“What if he’s just some overhyped magician?” “Well, then I guess I’m no help to you,” Grey said, standing up.
“If I can’t be of use, there’s no need for me to stay.” “Wait!” Cedric called, his voice rising slightly.
He turned sharply to Charlotte.
“Did I ask for your opinion?
Be quiet when I’m speaking.” Charlotte clicked her tongue, glaring at Grey, her eyes full of disdain.
‘This peasant… because of him, Dad shouted at me.
I’ll make him regret it.’ “Please, Grey,” Cedric begged, his tone softening.
“Don’t leave.
Just hear me out.
Tell me what happened.” Grey hesitated for a moment, then sat back down.
“Alright, I’ll listen.
Who’s been kidnapped?” “It’s my son,” Cedric said, his voice heavy with worry.
“The rightful heir to my position here.
He went to a neighboring town for some errands, unaware that they were rivals of ours.
They’ve been trying to oust me from my position for a long time, to take control of this town.” “How did he get kidnapped, though?
He’s a two-star Lightning Mage, after all,” Cedric continued.
“He went in disguise, but somehow they still got him.
We received a call saying he’s been taken, and the ransom is simple-they want me to surrender the town.” ‘He’s a two-star mage, just like me,’ Grey thought.’And they kidnapped him?
Whoever did this must be stronger than he is.’ “What’s in it for me?” Grey asked, his eyes narrowing with interest as he leaned back in his chair, his arms folded across his chest.
“What?!” Charlotte shouted, her voice rising with disbelief.
“Didn’t you hear what he just said?
They’re threatening to take control of the town!” “And what does that have to do with me?” Grey asked, raising an eyebrow, his voice indifferent.
“I don’t care if this town falls.
It burns to the ground, gets raided-none of that affects me as long as I don’t benefit from it.” ‘What’s wrong with him?’ Cedric thought, taken aback.
‘How can he be so cold?
Doesn’t he care about his people, his town?’ “What kind of a mage are you?” Charlotte demanded, her eyes flashing with anger.
“Isn’t it our responsibility to protect the defenseless, to safeguard what’s ours?” “Oh really?
Protect the defenseless?” Grey’s voice grew sharper, his anger seeping through his calm facade.
“Let me tell you something.
I was once called a cripple.
Why?
Because I had no affinity, no mana core.
I was beaten and bullied every single day of my life.
Where were you then?
Did you defend me?
Did you even know?
No!
No one cared.
I was invisible, until I became a mage.
Now that I’ve got power, suddenly you recognize me.
Hypocrites!” Mana swirled around Grey, a visible pulse of energy crackling in the air, an embodiment of his wrath.
‘So this is why he’s like this,’ Cedric thought, his expression softening with understanding.
Charlotte stood frozen, taken aback by Grey’s outburst.
“So, what do you want?” Cedric asked, his voice filled with a mix of curiosity and resignation.
“I’m glad you asked,” Grey said, his anger simmering down into a sly grin.
“I don’t need much.
All I want is 5,000 gold coins.” “5,000?!
That’s outrageous!” Charlotte exclaimed.
Grey smirked.
“Oh, are you not concerned about your brother, Lady Charlotte?” “I’ll grant your request,” Cedric said quickly, his voice full of desperation.
“Just please-rescue my son.
Bring him back safe.” “Consider it done.” Grey’s smile was full of confidence.
“Dad, let me come with you!” Charlotte said suddenly.
“Why?” Cedric asked, surprised.
“Because I want to see if this mage is truly as powerful as they say.
And also, I want to punish those bastards for daring to take my brother.” “Fine,” Cedric said with a resigned sigh.
“But take two two-star mages with you for safety.” “Thank you, Dad!” Charlotte beamed.
“So, when do we start?” Grey asked, already standing.
“Now,” Cedric said.
“They gave me an ultimatum-by tomorrow, they want me to surrender the town.
If you can rescue my son today, I’ll be forever grateful.” “Alright, then.
Let’s go rescue your son!” Grey said, his tone unwavering.
