Chapter 1003: Secret Talk ( 2 )
“We took a bath and felt refreshed, so we just cleaned the kitchen and prepared dinner. Xiao Li, Second Brother, can you help us bring the food to the living room?” said Li Chenmo while carrying a pot of mushroom soup.
Li Lingyun nodded and agreed readily, “No problem.”
He carried two dishes, while Dong Li took another dish and the rice basket. Meanwhile, Lu Jueyu brought a basket of utensils and a jar of herbal tea brewed with licorice root and ginseng to reduce fatigue and stress.
Once all the dishes were set on the table, Dong Li went to call his grandfather. When Father Li came over, he was taken aback by the amount of dishes they cook, and asked, “Third son, did you go out to buy meat?”
“Father, we brought some salted meat and sausages from home. While we didn’t have chicken, we did bring eggs,” said Li Chenmo as he served his wife a bowl of soup.
Hearing this, Li Lingyun asked with surprise, “Third Sister-in-law, you even brought eggs? Weren’t you worried they would break on the road?”
“Well, my husband wrapped them in leaves, so they didn’t break even with a few bumps,” she said with a smile.
Father Li nodded approvingly, and said with a smile, “This is a good idea. Alright, let’s eat before the food gets cold.”
While they were having their meal, Mother Pan was helping her daughter unpack in their house. Opening a bamboo suitcase, she was surprised to see snacks and packaged food instead of clothes.
“Jiajia, didn’t you bring any clothes?” she asked.
“Mother, I still have clothes here, so I didn’t pack any. I plan to take everything back to Xie Village this time,” replied Pan Meijia while sorting her belongings.
Hearing this, Mother Pan felt a pang of sadness in her heart. She didn’t know when she would see her daughter again after she moved to Xie Village following her marriage to Li Lingyun.
If not for the wedding, it would have been hard for her daughter to visit them. After all, educated youth sent to the countryside couldn’t return without permission.
Noticing her mother’s mood, Pan Meijia took her mother’s hand, smiled, and said, “Mother, don’t be sad. After I’m married, even if I can’t come to visit you, you and my Father can come to Xie Village.”
“When you visit, you will see how nice life is there. Though there are a few troublesome people, most villagers are friendly and help each other out.”
Her mother sighed and poked at her forehead lightly, “Are you really that happy to live in the village? The resources there are limited, and the hospital isn’t as good as here in the capital. After marrying Lingyun, your household registration will be transferred to Xie village. It will be difficult for you to go to the capital again in the future.”
After hearing her mother’s words, Pan Meijia went silent for a moment before she replied, “Mother, I have never felt that having a capital household register is necessarily better than a village one.”
“Why do you say that?” Mother Pan asked curiously.
Pan Meijia pulled her mother to sit beside her and said, “Mother, think about it. Here, you can only work for the government or in factories. It was a good job since we receive fixed salaries, monthly rations, and coupons, but food in the supply stores is limited.”
“We are lucky because Father and my brothers’ positions are high, so the government allocated this house to our family. But if they were lower-level factory workers, we would have been crammed into a single-bedroom house.”
“What’s more, job opportunities here are limited. Many people are unemployed, creating burdens on their families and leading to food shortages and low life quality.”
“But in the village, everyone can work in the fields, earning points to exchange for food. And the production team allocated us a big house.”
Mother Pan frowned when she heard this. She had never thought about this problem because their family’s living conditions were very good. But when she thought about her neighbor’s situation, she realized that her daughter was right.
Seeing that her mother was deep in thought, Pan Meijia smiled and continued, “Mother, Brother Yun’s house has three large bedrooms and a living room. His kitchen is built separately in the backyard, which saves me the trouble of cleaning the house every time we cook.”
“His house also has separate buildings like a woodshed and a warehouse. He even has two underground cellars for storing grains and other items such as wine, sauces, and jams.”
“Besides that, the front and back yards are so large that we have five vegetable gardens in total. The river is right behind the backyard, making it very convenient to catch fish.”
Hearing her daughter’s words, Mother Pan’s eyes widened with disbelief as she asked, “Is his house really that nice?”
Pan Meijia nodded and said excitedly, “Not only that, Mother. Brother Yun built a waterway from the mountain spring that reaches the backyard. We use the mountain spring water for cooking and drinking. It’s very refreshing and sweet.”
“There’s also a well in the front yard for us to use for showers and washing clothes. It’s very convenient,” Pan Meijia said with a hint of pride in her voice.
After listening to her daughter’s words, Mother Pan thought that living in the village seemed much better than living in the city.

“Apart from the inconvenience of getting supplies like fabric, cotton, or industrial items, the village is much better than the city. There is even a doctor living in Xie Village, so we can see him for common illnesses. The hospital is also only two hours away from the village.”
“The most important thing is that Brother Yun and his family treat me very well. So, don’t worry about me, Mother. I’m happy living in Xie Village and don’t regret giving up my household registration in the capital,” Pan Meijia added with a smile.
