When Mother Pan heard her daughter’s words, she let out a long sigh and said, “Mother never said that Lingyun and his family aren’t good or that village life isn’t good. It’s just that I’m reluctant to be parted from you.”

“You are my only daughter. When did you ever have to work so hard?” she added with teary eyes.

Pan Meijia smiled and said, “Mother, I’m not a child anymore, you can’t protect me forever. Mother, I can support myself and support you and my Father in your old age.”

Hearing her mother’s words, Pan Meijia was stunned. She hadn’t considered this risk. It was true that the amount of money and food her father and brothers received was fixed. If they started living lavishly, people might become suspicious and report them.

Even though there wouldn’t be any evidence tying her family to bribery, they still couldn’t easily explain where the money came from. Personal transactions could lead to serious consequences.

After weighing the pros and cons, Pan Meijia sighed and said, “Mother, I hadn’t thought of that.”

Mother Pan patted her daughter’s hand lightly and said with a smile, “It’s alright as long as you understand and not blame your mother for rejecting this money. Your father and I agreed that you should keep all the money given by the Li family.”

“If you are worried that we might not have enough to eat, you can just send us some vegetables and grains. Even if you send money, we wouldn’t dare to use it,” Mother Pan added.

Thinking that sending money or food would be the same, Pan Meijia quickly agreed, “Mother, I understand. I will send some vegetables and grains every month to you and Father.”

Seeing her daughter’s agreement, Mother Pan smiled and said, “Good.”

Afterward, the mother and daughter stored the snacks and food that Pan Meijia had brought from Xie Village. These snacks would be shared with the neighbors when the Li family visited in two days. When they were done, Pan Meijia took a shower and had a nap before having dinner with her family.

Early the next morning, Lu Jueyu was woken up by the sound of her husband and son training in the yard. When she came out, she looked at the still-dark sky, and muttered softly, “It’s not even dawn yet.”

Li Chenmo knew his wife was going to her space and nodded. After she went back into the room, he resumed training with their son. Knowing it would take them over an hour to finish, he shortened their break time.

Once inside her space, Lu Jueyu washed her face and went for a morning run for two hours before showering and preparing snacks and foods to replenish what they had eaten on their journey.

When she finished, she left her space, reappearing in the room only five minutes later. She then went to the kitchen to boil water and prepare breakfast.

Since they had flour, she made youtiao, scallion pancakes, and vegetable porridge. Today’s breakfast was simpler than usual, but there was plenty of it.

An hour later, she heard voices coming from outside. When she came to the yard, she saw various items arranged neatly. Seeing this, she asked with surprise, “Husband, what’s this?”

Hearing his wife’s voice, Li Chenmo looked at her and said, “Wife, these are the betrothal gifts my second brother prepared. We will take them with us tomorrow when we visit the Pan family to propose.”
