Using his thumb, Li Lingyun wiped the moisture from his girlfriend’s lips and said hoarsely, “Jia Er, I can’t wait to bring you home with me.”

Standing in the kitchen, Mother Pan sighed, thinking she should have gone out to gossip after lunch instead. It felt awkward being around the couple.

While they were having lunch, the Li family was also eating in their rented house. As they ate, Li Chenmo said, “Father, since we don’t have much to do at home, how about we go take a family photo?”

Father Li looked interested and asked, “Third son, I heard from Old Guo that taking a photo is costly. Isn’t it true?”

Li Chenmo smiled at his father’s words and said, “Father, I asked around, and the cost isn’t too high. For a single person, one photo costs 60 cents. For two people or more, it’s 1 yuan per photo. It’s much cheaper than in the county town.”

Lu Jueyu nodded and said, “We can take a family photo once a year. This way, we can store our memories and look back on them in the future.”

After lunch, they left the rented house and took a bus to the photo studio. Expecting it to be busy, they were surprised to find the store deserted.

The young woman’s eyes lit up as she took out two pieces of paper from the drawer and placed them on the counter.

“Hello, comrade! This is our price list. You can take a look first and decide which package you would like,” she said excitedly.

Lu Jueyu nodded and examined the price list. Standing beside her, Li Chenmo noted that the prices matched what he had heard earlier. The store also offered a slightly discounted package compared to single photos. The price is quite reasonable, but he is not sure whether the photo quality is good or not.

After a moment of consideration, Lu Jueyu said, “Comrade, we would like one family photo package and one single photo package for my father-in-law.”

The young woman quickly nodded and said, “Okay. The family photo package includes three photos for 2 yuan and 50 cents, and the single photo package includes four photos for 2 yuan. Altogether, that’s 4 yuan and 50 cents.”

“Comrade, can we rent clothes from the store?” asked Lu Jueyu.

The young woman nodded and said, “Yes, we have clothes available for rent at 10 cents per set.”

When Father Li heard this, he said, “That’s too expensive.”

“Uncle, while the price may seem high, the clothes are custom-made and of excellent quality. I promise you will look even more handsome in them,” the young woman said with a smile.

“Can we see the clothes before deciding?” asked Lu Jueyu.

“Of course, please follow me,” the young woman agreed readily.

They followed her into a small room, and Lu Jueyu was pleasantly surprised by the selection. Instead of plain, long-sleeved clothes with floral patterns and dark pants, the racks held military uniforms, Qipaos, and Western suits, attire rarely seen in the mainland.

Since Qipaos and Western suits were more common in Shanghai and not practical for everyday wear, they were perfect for a photo.

With this in mind, Lu Jueyu turned to the young woman and said, “Comrade, we would like to rent these.”

The young woman’s smile widened as she asked, “Comrade, how many sets would you like to rent?”

Lu Jueyu chose a Qipao and three Western suits. She showed it to the young woman and said, “We will take these.”

In another room, a young man was waiting for them. His eyes lit up when he saw them walking into the room, especially when he looked at Li Chenmo.

“This is the first time I have seen someone wear this suit so well. It looks like this suit was made for you,” he said.

He approached Li Chenmo, looking him over from head to toe, and asked, “Comrade, may I use your photo for promotion in the store?”

He didn’t want strangers looking at his photo every day. Only his wife deserved to appreciate his handsomeness in a suit.
