Chapter 1049: An Unexpected Side Business ( 1 )
The moment Father Pan heard Father Li’s words, his eyes lit up. He quickly half pulled and half led Father Li towards the study, while saying, “Of course! Let’s play in the study room.”
As they passed the women in the living room, Father Li nodded and smiled at them as a greeting. But only Mother Pan and another woman responded to his greetings. As for the others, they just observed him quietly with arrogance in their eyes.
Seeing this scene, Father Li just sighed in his heart. Fortunately, these people are all relatives, and his second son would rarely have contact with them. Otherwise, with his second son’s character, he might have offended many of his wife’s relatives in the future.
While Father Li was thinking about his second son’s future, Father Pan was excited because he could finally escape from his relatives.
The past few days had been tiring for Father Pan due to the influx of relatives. Most of the guests who came for the wedding banquet were women and children.
While not everyone stayed overnight, they would arrive early in the morning and linger until after dinner. Not only did the Pan family have to prepare meals for them, but they also had to entertain them throughout the day.
Exhausted by them, Father Pan was desperate for a moment of peace. Therefore at this moment, Father Li had become a savior in his eyes.
When they entered the so-called study room, Father Li realized it had previously been Pan Chiyan’s bedroom. The room had been converted into a study, with a desk, a few chairs, and a cabinet filled with books.
“In-law, please have a seat,” Father Pan said, pouring a cup of tea for Father Li.
Taking a seat across the table, Father Li put the chess set down.
“In-law, I found this set in the rented house. I wonder if you are familiar with this type?” he asked.
Father Pan’s eyes brightened at the sight of the set. He took it out from the transparent box and asked, “Isn’t this Weiqi? I have always wanted a set like this. I didn’t expect my in-law to bring one instead.”
“Well, I wanted to find a Xiangqi set, but none were available. So, we will have to settle for this,” Father Li said with a smile.
Father Pan waved and said happily, “Weiqi is great! It’s more interesting than Xiangqi!”
Father Li was happy that his in-law had the same thought as him and said, “Excellent. Let’s begin, then.”
While the two fathers played chess, Pan Meijia was busy brewing tea and preparing snacks in the kitchen, while Mother Pan entertained the guests in the living room.
When Pan Chiyan entered the kitchen, he saw his sister’s tired face. As a bride, she shouldn’t have to do anything today and only needs to be beautiful. It’s a pity that their relatives are unreasonable and keep bothering them without any intention to help.
He let out a long sigh, walked over, and said, “Jiajia, go take a break. I will handle the rest.”
Pan Meijia sighed in relief when she heard her brother’s words and said, “Thank you, Brother.”
He smiled and patted her head affectionately before saying, “Go shower and change your clothes. The banquet starts in less than two hours.”
She nodded but paused to ask, “Brother, where is my second brother? I haven’t seen him since last night.”
“He went to meet your fiancé. Apparently, they had something to take care of before coming over,” Pan Chiyan explained.
Pan Meijia nodded at his words and headed off to freshen up. As she passed through the living room, she felt many eyes on her. Her relatives were seated on couches and chairs with varied gazes landing on her.
The elders’ faces were filled with joy and approval, while her cousins’ expressions ranged from indifference to jealousy.
Pan Meijia was used to such treatment by her cousins. Growing up, she had been pampered by her family, while they had worked hard at home, often treated unfairly compared to their brothers. This disparity had bred resentment in their hearts.
In the past, she would have confronted them, but her time in Xie village had taught her a lot. She realized that no matter how well she treated some people, they would always feel dissatisfied with her. It was better to focus on her own life and ignore them.
After she went for a shower, one of her cousins spoke up, “Aunt, why isn’t there a matchmaker here?”
“That’s right,” another chimed in. “No matter how simple the wedding is, a matchmaker should still be invited.”
Mother Pan immediately understood their intentions and smiled as she replied, “There is no matchmaker because today isn’t the wedding day.”
The fourth aunt joined in, asking pointedly, “If it’s not the wedding day, why hold a banquet? Sister-in-law, even if your family is doing better than us, you shouldn’t waste my brother’s money like this.”

Mother Pan chuckled at her words and said, “Sister-in-law, this banquet was my son-in-law’s idea. He insisted on treating everyone to a meal to celebrate their marriage in advance.”
After a moment of pause, she continued with a proud smile, “He said that since not everyone could attend the wedding in the village, he wanted to make sure Jiajia’s relatives and friends knew she was married.”
A cousin asked curiously when she heard this, “Does that mean there won’t be another banquet on the wedding day?”
“How could that be?” Mother Pan replied. “The Li family has already prepared everything in their village. They will host another banquet there.”
After she took a sip of tea, she added, “We even told them there was no need to invite so many people, but my son-in-law insisted. Not only that, but he also sent a generous amount of betrothal gifts. Honestly, it will take us ages to use it all up.”
The relatives exchanged meaningful glances before Mother Pan’s sister smiled and said, “Sister, if it’s too much, maybe Jiajia could bring some back to the village. After all, it’s not fair to let the groom’s family bear all the costs.”
