Chapter 1083: Hongmen Banquet
“Sister Bai, how much can your sister-in-law produce these items in a month?” one of the mothers asked curiously.
“She can only make up to 15 jars of each type per month. So, each person can only order one jar per type,” Bai Xue’er said with a sigh.
When they heard that the items were limited, the mothers looked at each other and saw the competition in their eyes.
“Sister Bai, I want one of each type!” someone blurted, breaking the silence.
“Me too!” another chimed in.
Hearing this, everyone placed orders one after another, fearing that they would not be able to get the goods.
Bai Xue’er smiled and pulled out a small notebook from her bag. She opened the book and said, “Everyone, please take turns to talk. I will write down the orders. First come, first served. The rest will have to wait until next month if the quota for this month is full.”
Two hours later, her notebook was filled with more than 60 names. When she closed her book, one woman pointed at the small jars and said, “Sister Bai, this jar is so small—it won’t even last a month.”
“Sister-in-law, don’t worry. This jar is just a sample. The jars you will receive are as big as the ones sold in department stores. Since you only need a little each day, one jar will last two to three months.” Bai Xue’er reassured her.
Relieved by her reassurance, the woman nodded and said with a smile, “That is great. I won’t have to worry that I don’t have enough to use.”
After finalizing the orders, Bai Xue’er said, “Once I receive the creams, I will let everyone know. When the time comes, everyone is welcome to come to my house to pick the goods.”
Everyone agreed readily, accustomed to this kind of discrete transaction.
Bai Xue’er left the school in a good mood and headed to a tea party hosted by the vice mayor’s wife. The tea party, held at noon, was just an excuse for the women to gather for gossip and play cards.
Since she had several groups of friends, she didn’t plan to allocate all the pre-order slots to just one group. For the mothers’ group, she allotted only 15 pre-order slots, as most of them were known for being stingy.
By limiting the availability of the products, she aimed to spark their competitive spirit, encouraging them to make purchases. After all, the restrictions meant they could only buy the products once every two or three months. This way, the previously expensive price became more acceptable.
For the vice mayor’s wife’s group, she allocated 30 slots. After all, everyone in that circle was someone she couldn’t afford to offend, so she had no choice but to give each of them a slot.
Besides, they have a lot of pride to compete with each other. Therefore, there is no need to make them wait a month before purchasing. Given their financial means, they could easily afford the price.
Moreover, some members of the group often bought beauty products through illegal channels. Compared to those products, Lu Jueyu’s products would appear reasonably priced. Coupled with the product’s ‘rarity,’ it was certain they would purchase without hesitation.
As for the remaining 55 slots, she planned to distribute them among her relatives. With about 45 relatives from her family and her husband’s side combined, the remaining 10 slots would be reserved for herself. These could serve as gifts for building connections or attending parties hosted by her husband’s supervisor.
With these plans in mind, she arrived at the vice mayor’s house. Standing at the gate, the guard stopped her and asked, “Hello, comrade. May I ask the purpose of your visit?”
Bai Xue’er smiled at the guard, handed over her invitation, and said, “Hello, comrade. I’m here to attend the Vice mayor’s wife’s tea party. This is the invitation.”
The guard examined the invitation and said, “Ah, you are the mayor’s secretary’s wife.”
He quickly opened the gate, gestured for her to enter, and added, “Madam, please go ahead.”
Bai Xue’er nodded and said, “Thank you, Comrade.”
As she walked into the compound, she noticed several others heading toward the vice mayor’s house. Judging by their elegant attire, they appeared to be wives of wealthy families. Compared to them, Bai Xue’er’s outfit was modest.
Upon reaching the house, she realized that the so-called tea party was, in fact, a small garden party. It was far different from what she had been told when she received the invitation. Observing the guests’ refined clothing, she quickly understood the situation.
She wondered why the vice mayor’s wife had suddenly invited her, knowing their husbands were not on the same side politically. Turns out, this was a Hongmen banquet—a trap disguised as hospitality.
Despite recognizing the potential pitfalls, Bai Xue’er maintained her composure and smiled as she entered the house to greet the vice mayor’s wife.
“Madam, I apologize for being late,” she said graciously.
The vice mayor’s wife gave her a look of subtle disdain when she saw her clothes, but smiled and replied, “Madam Pan, it’s alright. This tea party is just a casual gathering—no need to apologize.”

Another guest chuckled and added, “Madam Pan, I wonder what gift you brought today. Please share it with us to broaden our horizons.”
Everyone assumed she had come unprepared, given her lack of information about the party’s true nature.
Noticing the subtle provocation, Bai Xue’er smiled and replied, “Well, I didn’t bring anything extravagant—just a small set of handmade beauty products.”
Hearing this, the group turned their attention to her bag, their expressions a mix of curiosity and mockery. Those loyal to the vice mayor’s wife sneered, while others were genuinely intrigued.
Everyone knew the mayor’s secretary was a capable man, and his wife was equally skilled in social interactions. Despite her casual attire, they doubted she would arrive empty-handed as it would be a rude gesture as a guest. When she took out a small box from her bag, their curiosity deepened.
