Bai Xue’er nodded and asked, “Is my husband in his office?”

“Comrade Pan should be in his office,” the receptionist replied with a nod.

When they reached Pan Chiyan’s office, Bai Xue’er knocked on the door and heard her husband’s calm voice coming from inside, “Come in.”

Hearing her voice, Pan Chiyan set down his pen and walked over to the couch. Noticing the layered lunch boxes, he looked surprised and asked, “Wife, why did you prepare so much food today?”

“Oh, we still have some left?” Pan Chiyan asked with a smile.

Handing her husband a pair of chopsticks, Bai Xue’er said, “I reheated the sweet and sour pork, braised potatoes, and steamed buns. Tonight, I will try one of the third sister-in-law’s recipes.”

Pan Chiyan nodded and reminded her, “Just keep it simple, you don’t need to spend too much time cooking.”

Touched by his concern, Bai Xue’er smiled and nodded, “I know. The third sister-in-law’s recipes are easy and simple. I just hope they turn out delicious.”

Seeing her frown, Pan Chiyan took her hand and said, “When I married you, I knew cooking wasn’t your strength. So, don’t worry about what people say too much.”

Pan Shiwu, oblivious to his father’s meaning, added enthusiastically, “Xiao Wu loves Mother’s cooking—it’s delicious!”

Chuckling at his son’s innocent words, Pan Chiyan patted his son’s head. He looked at his wife and added, “Besides, look how plump our son is! Compared to other wives, mine has done an excellent job taking care of our family.”

Hearing her husband’s praise, warmth filled Bai Xue’er’s heart. She didn’t seek recognition, but being acknowledged by her family made her efforts feel worthwhile.

Feeling happy, she picked up a piece of sweet and sour pork for her husband and said softly, “Husband, I think your relationship with the vice mayor will improve soon.”

Raising an eyebrow, Pan Chiyan asked, “Wife, why do you say that?”

“Do you remember the beauty products Jueyu made?” she asked him back.

Pan Chiyan glanced at his wife’s youthful face and said meaningfully, “Of course.”

At his teasing tone, memories of their entanglement during the previous night flashed in Bai Xue’er’s mind. She shot him a glare and said, “Be serious.”

“I’m very serious,” Pan Chiyan chuckled.

Ignoring his teasing, Bai Xue’er continued, “This morning, I attended the vice mayor’s wife’s tea party.”

Hearing her words, Pan Chiyan understood her meaning immediately and nodded. Married for eight years, their mutual understanding ran deep.

After a moment of thought, he said, “Just don’t overdo it. My career isn’t as important as your safety.”

Mother Xiao’s expression darkened at her words and she asked coldly, “So, you are blaming my daughter for not choosing the general’s son?”

“Aiyah, Sister-in-law, that’s not what I meant!” Su Meiling waved her hands defensively.

“Then what do you mean?” Mother Xiao pressed.

Stumped for words, Su Meiling glanced at Wei Qingyue, silently pleading for help.

Noticing her winks, Wei Qingyue set her teacup down and said with feigned concern, “Second Sister-in-law, is something wrong with your eyes? If you feel discomfort, you should visit the hospital for a check-up. Ignoring it might lead to serious issues ah.”
