At the pigpen, only Li Chenmo, Chen Jianmin, and Chen Jianguo were cleaning it.

While shoveling manure, Li Chenmo said, “Jianmin, Jianguo, later bring your family to the village hall after school. The banquet will start at two o’clock this afternoon.”

Chen Jianmin nodded and said, “Uncle, we will come earlier to help.”

“No need to worry. We have enough helpers.”

After their brief conversation, Chen Jianguo glanced at his brother and admired how good he was at building relationships.

Thanks to his brother, their family had been included in the guest list for the Li family’s wedding banquet. Just thinking about the important figures invited to the event filled him with pride.

Unaware of his brother’s thoughts, Chen Jianmin was simply looking forward to a good meal. Together, they finished cleaning the pigpen in an hour.

Before they left, Li Chenmo said, “Your Aunt Li made plenty of breakfast. Eat before you go back.”

Used to eating at his house, Chen Jianmin didn’t refuse and readily agreed. “Thank you, Uncle Li.”

Li Chenmo nodded but said nothing. He appreciated Chen Jianmin’s directness—it made interactions comfortable.

Looking at the boy, a smile appeared on his face. He is a good seedling. Letting him use his name to build connections with Houzi was worth it.

When they returned, Lu Jueyu, Dong Li, and Dong Huang had just finished harvesting vegetables. Looking at the several baskets of produce in the backyard, Chen Jianguo fell into deep thought.

He knew that some vegetables could be harvested multiple times before wilting, but the vegetables grown by the Li family seemed to have a longer lifespan and higher yields.

Initially, he thought it was due to their fertilizer. However, even after using the same fertilizer, his family’s vegetables couldn’t match the yield or taste of the Li family’s crops.

He glanced at the soil thoughtfully, then shifted his gaze to the small pond near the backyard gate. His family used well water, while the Li family used water from a mountain spring.

‘Is it because of the water?’ he wondered.

Noticing his absentmindedness, Chen Jianmin asked, “Jianguo, what’s wrong?”

Snapping out of his thoughts, Chen Jianguo shook his head and replied, “Brother, I was thinking about whether we could also use mountain spring water. The water at Uncle Li’s house tastes much better than ours.”

Dong Li overheard and said, “It will be hard to use mountain spring water for your house. Your house is located in the village, and it’s far from the mountain. You would need a lot of bamboo pipes to connect a waterway. Not only would it take a lot of effort, but you would also need permission from the production team and the villagers.”

“Jianguo, why do you suddenly want to use mountain spring water?” Chen Jianmin asked curiously.

It wasn’t possible to share his suspicions about the Li family’s vegetable garden.

After a brief hesitation, Chen Jianguo said, “Brother, I felt nauseous drinking our well water, but I felt refreshed after drinking Uncle Li’s water. I thought maybe our well water isn’t good for our health, so I wanted to try using mountain spring water.”

Just as he finished speaking, Lu Jueyu came out of the kitchen holding a basket of twisted doughnuts and said, “That is because the village’s well water is brackish water—a mix of saltwater and freshwater. Consuming brackish water long-term can harm the body and cause serious health problems.”

“If you want to use mountain spring water, you can take it from the small pond. You can ask Ah Li to help transport it to your house later,” she added.

Hearing this, Dong Li nodded and said, “How about I help you transport some water back later? You can use it as drinking water for now, and we can bring more on Sunday.”

Chen Jianguo’s eyes lit up, and he asked, “Aunt Li, could using well water to water vegetables lower their quality?”

Lu Jueyu nodded and replied, “Yes, because its salt content is higher than freshwater. The crops will definitely be affected. Since the mountain springs are too far, you can use water from the river instead. The river water also originates from the mountain springs.”

Chen Jianmin nodded and said, “Thank you for the suggestion, Aunt Li.”

Although the Chen family’s house was in the village, a small river was nearby, just a ten-minute walk away. Fetching river water to irrigate their garden wouldn’t be a problem.

Lu Jueyu smiled and said, “Alright, let’s eat first. If the food gets cold, it won’t taste as good.”

After washing their hands, they all sat in the living room for breakfast. Once they finished eating, Chen Jianmin and Chen Jianguo returned home and went to school, while Dong Li and Dong Huang accompanied their father to Li Lingyun’s house.

After locking the doors, Lu Jueyu grabbed her makeup box and rode her bicycle to her parents’ house. As the sun rose, villagers began leaving their homes one by one.

Seeing her pass by, one of the women called out, “Jueyu, where are you heading?”

Stopping her bicycle, Lu Jueyu replied, “Good morning, Aunt Chen. I’m on my way to my parent’s house. Today is my second brother-in-law’s wedding, and I need to help my second sister-in-law with her makeup.”

Upon hearing this, the woman slapped her forehead lightly and exclaimed, “Aiyah, I completely forgot about your family’s wedding banquet! Jueyu, I will bring my daughter and daughter-in-law over later to help prepare the wedding banquet.”

It was better with more helpers. So, Lu Jueyu smiled and said, “Thank you, Aunt Chen. I need to hurry, or I will be late. See you later!”

“Oh, go on then. We will come to your house in about an hour,” Aunt Chen replied.

Before leaving, Lu Jueyu added, “Aunt Chen, the wedding banquet will be held at the village hall, so you can head there directly.”

Aunt Chen nodded and said with a smile, “Okay. Ride safely!”

With a smile, Lu Jueyu waves her hands and continues on her way.
