Chapter 1126: Malicious Rumor
Just imagining what people might say if they discovered she couldn’t leave the bed after her wedding night made Pan Meijia want to bury herself in a hole.
Determined to avoid such rumors, she gritted her teeth and said, “Husband, we still have to visit your father and my parents. I can take a nap this afternoon after we return.”
Although Li Lingyun felt it wasn’t necessary to visit their parents right away, he chose to remain silent when he saw the determination in her eyes. In the end, he could only let her do as she wished.
He placed the basin of hot water down, rubbed his wife’s head and said, “Then let’s have breakfast first before visiting our parents.”
Hearing this, Pan Meijia looked up at the bright sky and asked, “Husband, haven’t you eaten yet?”
“Well, today is our first day as a married couple. I wanted to have our first meal together,” Li Lingyun said with a smile.
When she heard this, Pan Meijia was so touched that she hugged her husband’s arm and said, “Husband, you are so good to me.”
Rubbing his wife’s hair, Li Lingyun replied, “You’re my wife. Being good to you is my duty, and I’m more than willing to pamper you.”
“Alright, go wash up first. I’ll heat the meal, and we can eat together,” he added.
“Okay! Thank you, husband,” Pan Meijia said with a grin.
Watching her, Li Lingyun could only smile helplessly. While he went to the kitchen, Pan Meijia fetched the face soap, toothbrush, and toothpaste given to her by Lu Jueyu.
By the time she finished washing up, the meal was ready. Since this was her first time visiting her eldest brother-in-law and her father-in-law, Pan Meijia had prepared gifts for her nephews and sister-in-law.
For Zhang Dongmei, she had brought a hairband and a scarf. For Li Jingqian and Li Jingxu, she had prepared cotton jackets. These gifts, brought from the capital, were considered fashionable in the village.
As for Father Li and Li Chenze, their gifts had been chosen by her husband to avoid suspicion. After locking the doors, Li Lingyun rode the bicycle with his wife seated on the back.
As they headed to Father Li’s house, a villager spotted them and called out, “Meijia ah, where are you going with your husband?”
Hearing this, Li Lingyun slowed his pedaling so his wife could chat briefly.
“Hello, Aunty. My husband and I are going to visit my father-in-law,” Pan Meijia replied with a smile.
The villager, feeling curious, was about to ask more questions, but before she could say a word, the couple had already ridden off into the distance.
Watching them leave, another villager commented, “It’s so convenient to have a bicycle. They don’t have to walk far and can save so much time and energy.”
A young woman sighed and added, “Isn’t that true? In our village, besides the Li family and Comrade Han, only Xiao Li owns a bicycle. It might take us a decade to save enough to buy one.”
Her words prompted another villager to add, “Oh, speaking of Xiao Li, have you heard about the matter regarding Liu Hua’s cousin?”
“Do you mean Liu Piao?” a young woman asked.
“What happened to her?” another asked curiously.
“I heard she was beaten by her ex-fiancé’s family a few days ago when she went to town,” the villager whispered.
Everyone gasped at her words and looked at her with wide eyes.
“What happened? Don’t keep us in suspense!” one of them urged.
Lowering her voice, the villager continued, “I heard from my cousin’s sister-in-law’s friend that Liu Piao was accused of having an affair with Liu Pan by Shi Qiwan. That family thought she ran away because of it so they went to settle scores with her.”
“No one knows the full story, but since Shi Qiwan reported it, there must be some truth to it,” she added.
A middle-aged woman frowned when she heard her words and scolded, “Liu Pan and Liu Piao are siblings by blood! How could they have an affair? This is clearly a malicious rumor spread by Shi Qiwan out of spite after her divorce.”
“But Aunty,” the villager countered, “don’t you know Liu Pan treats Liu Piao much better than he treats Liu Hua?”

“As her brother, isn’t it normal for him to treat his sister well?” the woman retorted sharply.
Before the villager could respond, the woman cut her off, “Instead of spreading baseless rumors, you should distance yourself from people with a petty mind and full of jealousy and greed like Shi Qiwan. Otherwise, you will get dragged into her mess.”
Feeling disgusted with the villager, she packed up her things and decided to leave. Shaking her head, the middle-aged woman muttered as she walked away, “People these days only know how to gossip. No wonder life gets harder every year. They spend all of their time and energy interfering with other people’s business rather than working hard.”
The remaining villagers exchanged awkward glances when they heard her words before quickly dispersing. After all, they hadn’t forgotten the villager’s close ties with Shi Qiwan.
No wonder she suddenly mentioned Liu Piao. She must be trying to help her friends deal with her!
Meanwhile, Li Lingyun and Pan Meijia had reached Father Li’s house. Entering the yard, they saw Li Chenze washing clothes by the well while Zhang Dongmei was busy picking the vegetables.
Noticing their arrival, Zhang Dongmei stopped what she was doing and greeted them warmly, “Second brother, Second sister-in-law, you’re here!”
Though close to Zhang Dongmei, it was the first time Pan Meijia had been addressed as “sister-in-law,” making her feel shy. After parking the bicycle, she took the gifts from the front and approached Zhang Dongmei.
Standing before her, she greeted, “Eldest sister-in-law, Eldest brother.”
Zhang Dongmei beamed at her greeting and said, “Second sister-in-law, come in quickly. Your parents and Second Aunt visited us this morning and just left.”
