Chapter 1133: Heart To Heart Talk ( 2 )
Doctor Xie took a sip of his wife and continued, “I’m not asking you to forget what happened or forgive him. But you can’t let hatred trap you in the past. I don’t want you to waste your life as I have.”
“You are still young and you have a bright future. One day, you will find a woman to spend your life with—someone you will truly love,” he added meaningfully.
Xie Xuanzi’s eyes widened in shock when he heard this and he asked in disbelief, “Uncle, you know?”
Doctor Xie nodded and replied, “I have seen it in your eyes whenever you look at her. You have loved her for so many years. As her father, I’m grateful for your unwavering feelings. But she has long gone. It’s time for you to let go and live your life.”
Clenching his fists, Xie Xuanzi said in a low voice, “Uncle, I have tried, but I can’t do it.”
Doctor Xie sipped his wine and said, “I know your father has arranged a marriage for you. When you return to the capital, meet the lady first. Even if you are unwilling to marry or can’t let go, show her basic respect.”
“Meet her and reject her in person. Don’t give her false hope. Don’t waste a woman’s time by keeping her hanging in this situation. Women’s youth is short, and it shouldn’t be wasted like this.”
After a long silence, Xie Xuanzi nodded and replied, “Uncle, thank you. I know what I should do.”
“Good. I will write a letter to your father, and you can return tomorrow,” Doctor Xie said.
“I can’t go back yet,” Xie Xuanzi said, shaking his head.
“Why? Still throwing tantrums?” Doctor Xie raised an eyebrow.
“Uncle, I came to find my comrade’s daughter. Before he passed, he lived in a neighboring village. His cousin is the team leader of your production team,” Xie Xuanzi explained.
Doctor Xie thought for a moment and asked, “Are you looking for Han Lihua?”
Xie Xuanzi’s eyes lit up when he heard this and asked him back, “Uncle, you know her?”
“Everyone in the brigade knows about her and her father’s tragic life,” Doctor Xie nodded.
“What happened to her? Uncle, do you know where she is?” Xie Xuanzi asked urgently.
Doctor Xie poured another cup of wine and said, “After her mother beat her half-deaf, her uncle adopted her and took her to another city for treatment. She has been there for months. I heard she is doing well with her adoptive father.”
“She is happy now, so don’t worry about her. If you care about your friend, visit his grave before returning. Without anyone to tend it, the grass must be a meter high by now.”
Xie Xuanzi’s eyes darkened when he heard his uncle’s words. His friend had been a talented man with a promising future. To think he had no one to care for his grave after his death was hard to accept.
Noticing his nephew’s emotions, Doctor Xie said, “Your friend wasn’t someone society would accept. Dying for love—that might have been his best ending.”
“Uncle, how do you know all this?!” Xie Xuanzi was truly shocked this time.
Doctor Xie snorted and replied, “Life in the village is boring. Listening to women gossip is the only entertainment here. Even if I didn’t want to know, I couldn’t avoid it.”
It took Xie Xuanzi a while to calm his shock. After so many years, his once-elegant and gentleman uncle had become a prickly old man full of gossip ah!
Seeing his nephew’s disbelief gazes, Doctor Xie burst into laughter and said, “Hahaha! Brat, you are indeed still too young! Hahahaha!”
Watching his uncle laugh until he was out of breath while pointing at his nose, Xie Xuanzi didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. In the end, he could only smile and let his uncle enjoy the moment.
After their conversation, they had a few more cups of tonic wine before Doctor Xie wrote a letter to his younger brother. With that letter, Xie Xuanzi finally agreed to return to the capital in a few days.
At the same time, Xiao Yiguan was carrying a bamboo basket and a sickle borrowed from Li Shu as he walked along the mountain foothills.
He had high expectations of finding plenty of good stuff. However, when he arrived in the area, he was stunned to see it had been almost completely cleared out by the villagers.
Not far from him, a group of children was foraging for wild vegetables and mushrooms, while a group of women picked wild fruits.
Just by looking at the small amount of things in their baskets, he could tell the area had been overly foraged. Recalling his mother’s words, he changed direction and walked toward the mountain forest to try his luck.

When a villager saw him heading that way, she stopped what she was doing and shouted, “Comrade, you shouldn’t go into the mountain alone, ah! There are a lot of wild beasts inside. If you get injured and no one was there to bring you back, you could die inside the mountain!”
Hearing her warning, Xiao Yiguan turned around and replied with a smile, “Thank you for your reminder, Comrade. I will be fine.”
After he finished speaking, he continued walking. When the villager saw that he wasn’t heeding her warning, she shook her head and resumed picking wild fruits.
Although the fruits were sour with a hint of sweetness, they were still a good source of vitamins. Many villagers competed to pick them, and she couldn’t afford to waste time. If she delayed, she might not even get a handful before everything was picked clean by others.
Even though Xiao Yiguan continued deeper into the mountain, he kept the villager’s warning in mind.
As a soldier, he had superior physical abilities and skills compared to civilians. But when faced with wild beasts such as tigers, bears, wolves, or even wild boars, his chances of survival were slim. Therefore, he proceeded with extra caution as he entered the forest.
