Chapter 1156: Feng Lin’s Trouble
Dong Li poured it into a bucket and mixed it with the mountain spring water. After ensuring the temperature was right, he said, “Go wash your face, then come help harvest the vegetables.”
Nodding at her brother, Dong Huang said, “Okay.”
After rubbing his sister’s soft hair, Dong Li grabbed a shoulder pole and filled two buckets of water from the water vat behind the kitchen. With his current strength, carrying them wasn’t a problem. As he walked, the buckets swayed a little, but no water spilled.
Using a bamboo dipper, he began watering the vegetables and a peach tree. Not long after, Dong Huang came over, carrying a bamboo basket. Both of them had grown taller and now looked their age.
Though Dong Li was still thin, his body was tall, strong, and firm. As for Dong Huang, she was now a chubby little girl with fair skin and soft hair.
Despite her delicate appearance, she was stronger than most children, thanks to the nutritious food and drinks she consumed daily. For her, carrying a basket full of vegetables was easy, let alone an empty one.
Seeing her, Dong Li stopped and said, “Xiao Huang, today we should harvest the pole beans and peppers.”
Hearing her brother’s words, Dong Huang nodded and replied obediently, “Oh, okay.”
Half an hour later, Lu Jueyu finished cooking and came over to help. Seeing that her son had watered the garden, she fetched more bamboo baskets from the woodshed to harvest the lettuce.
Looking at the Boston lettuce, she decided to harvest all of it and change the crops. If she wanted Boston lettuce again, she could get it from her space.
After making her decision, she looked at her children and said, “Ah Li, Xiao Huang, let’s pull out all the lettuce today. After we build the greenhouses, we will plant cauliflower and spinach in this plot.”
Hearing her words, Dong Li only nodded, but Dong Huang was taken aback. She trotted over to her mother and asked, “Mother, these lettuce are still growing well. Why do you want to pull them out?”
“Although they are still growing well, we have harvested them too many times. They won’t taste good anymore if they become old. So, we should change the crops. If Xiao Huang wants to eat lettuce again, we can plant some after we build the greenhouse,” Lu Jueyu explained.
Hearing they would plant new crops, Dong Huang no longer worried and nodded. “Mother, Xiao Huang understands now.”
Smiling at her daughter’s mature-like responses, Lu Jueyu said, “Then in the next few days, let’s harvest all the crops. That way, it will be easier to build the greenhouses. When the greenhouses are ready, we will plant more vegetables.”
Excited by the plan, Dong Huang asked, “Mother, there are so many vegetables to harvest. Should I ask my friends to come help?”
The villagers only knew about the vegetable plot in their front yard. No one was aware they planned to build greenhouses or had larger plots behind their house. If children saw it, they would tell their parents.
Since their family kept their land and houses by bribing Han Yuheng, they shouldn’t let others know about this matter. After all, no one was allowed to own land or houses in this era. If the villagers found out, trouble would arise.
Concluding this, Lu Jueyu shook her head and said, “There is no need to ask your friends for help. Mother will ask your uncles and aunts instead.”
Noticing her daughter’s disappointment, she asked, “Why does Xiao Huang want her friends to help?”
Lowering her head, Dong Huang hesitated before saying, “Mother, it’s Ah Lin. His stepmother keeps troubling his Grandpa and Grandma. She takes their food, saying Ah Lin should give it to his younger brother, who is already so fat he can’t walk.”
“Ah Lin is so thin and weak yet he didn’t have enough food to eat. When I visited last time, they didn’t even have grains left,” she added sadly.
Hearing this, Lu Jueyu frowned and asked, “What about his father? Doesn’t he care about what his wife did?”
Shaking her head, Dong Huang replied, “His father returned to the city, but his stepmother stays in town and comes every few days to take food.”
Thinking about Feng Lin’s life-saving grace toward her daughter before, Lu Jueyu decided she couldn’t ignore this matter.
After weighing her options, she said, “Xiao Huang, Mother will visit Grandpa Feng and Grandma Feng later. Don’t worry about this matter. Mother will find a way to help them.”
Hearing this, Dong Huang’s eyes lit up. Hugging her mother, she said sweetly, “Thank you, Mother.”
Patting her daughter’s back gently, Lu Jueyu smiled and replied, “Let’s work quickly so we can have breakfast with your father.”
After the conversation, they worked faster, harvesting all of the Boston lettuce before stopping. Looking at the baskets filled with fresh vegetables, the mother and children felt satisfied.
Lu Jueyu asked the child to take a bath and prepare their books for school. When she was alone, she kept all the vegetables in her own space, leaving some for Teacher Lin, Feng Lin and his grandparents.

She moved the empty baskets into her space, walked to the woodshed, took them out of her space, and stored them there. Once she was done, she went to the kitchen and brought breakfast to the living room.
Not long after, she heard the sound of the backyard gate opening and knew her husband had returned from the pig pen. She walked to the backyard and said, “Husband, breakfast is ready. After washing your hands, come and eat.”
Hearing his wife’s words, Li Chenmo nodded and replied, “Okay.”
After the children took their baths, they all had breakfast together. As usual, Lu Jueyu packed snacks, fruits, and water for her children and their little group. When the sun rose from the eastern horizon, Dong Li and Dong Huang set out for school.
Just as she was thinking about packing some food to visit Teacher Lin, Lu Jueyu heard the crisp sound of a bell echo through the house.
