Before Liu Piao could finish her words, Zhang Ermu interrupted, “Ah Piao, was it because of him? Was that man the reason you broke off our engagement?”

Liu Piao looked confused at first, then realized he was referring to the man her stepmother had chosen for her. She shook her head and said, “Mumu, I have only ever had you in my heart. The day my father broke our engagement, I was locked in my stepmother’s parents’ house.”

“When I finally escaped and came back, I was told you were the one who ended it. I was so angry and hurt that I didn’t want to see you. That was why, when you came to find me, I refused to meet you.”

Zhang Ermu’s eyes darkened with fury as the truth settled over him. For years, he had resented Liu Piao, believing she had been heartless and broken their promises. Now he realized they had both been victims of her stepmother’s schemes. So many years lost because of that woman’s lies!

Unaware of his growing anger, Liu Piao continued, “When I learned I was to marry that man, I tried to find you again. But before I could, my father caught me and locked me up. I waited and waited, hoping you would come, but you never did.”

“Later, I heard from my father and stepmother that your parents have found a good match for you, and within a month, you will marry that woman.”

Her voice trembled as she added, “I thought you didn’t want me anymore. I couldn’t bear to watch you marry someone else, so I decided to leave. Since that person and I were both being forced into marriages, I made a deal with him.”

“On the day of the wedding, I ran away. He used the excuse of searching for me to go to the city. When we met there, we filed for a divorce. He later married the woman he truly loved, and they now have a son together.”

Tears glistened in her eyes as she looked at Zhang Ermu and said, “Mumu, I missed you. Over the years, there hasn’t been a day when I didn’t miss you. I came back this time to see you. But if you still hate me, I will leave. Just say the word, and I will never appear in front of you again.”

Her words ignited something in Zhang Ermu. He glared at her, his voice sharp with emotion as he shouted at her, “You dare?!”

Startled by his sudden outburst, Liu Piao burst into tears, her sobs breaking the stillness of the night. He never spoke loudly to her before. But now, he was yelling at her. At that moment, she thought she had lost him for good.

Seeing her cry, Zhang Ermu panicked. He jumped down from the cart and pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly.

His voice softened, laced with desperation when he said, “Ah Piao, I was wrong. You can scold me, hit me, do whatever you want—but please, don’t say you will leave me again.”

“Do you know how I have lived all these years? I resented you for leaving without a word, but I could never forget you. I even thought I would accept it if you married someone else, as long as you were still here. At least I could see you from afar.”

His voice broke, tears streaming down his face as he continued, “When you left, I wanted to find you, but what right did I have? I thought you didn’t want me anymore.”

“I have regretted my cowardice every day since. I should have been braver, should have asked you why you suddenly changed your heart.”

“When I heard you had come back, I was so happy. But when I saw you with that boy, I felt like dying. The thought of you wearing a wedding dress for another man and having his children… I wanted to kill him.”

He looked into her tearful eyes, and pleaded, “Ah Piao, I love you so much that I can’t live without you. If you leave me again, I will die. So, can you please save me? Stay with me, okay?”

Liu Piao was stunned by his confession. Looking at his tears, she was startled. She thought she had suffered the most, but now she realized her Mumu had endured even more.

A man, who would not show weakness even when defeated by the world, cried and begged her. How could she be so blinded and doubt his feelings?

Wrapping her arms around his waist, she buried her face in his chest and nodded, “Mumu, let’s get married. I will never leave you anymore, Iwant to be your wife.”

Zhang Ermu stared at the top of her head, too stunned to speak. He stepped back slightly to look into her eyes and asked, “Ah Piao, are you sure? You know my family’s situation. If you marry me, you will be treated like a criminal.”

“Mumu, I’m sure. I don’t care how others treat me. As long as I can spend my life with you, I can face anything,” she said firmly.

Zhang Ermu felt as if he were floating on clouds. His mind raced with thoughts of their future together. He even thought about what to name their children. But then reality struck and he asked, “What about your family?”

“Don’t worry about them,” Liu Piao replied with a smile.

“Before I was married off, I made a deal with my father and he wrote a letter of separation to cut off our relationship. It was witnessed by the team leader and village elders. If he dares to trouble us, I have proof and can report him.”

Though still concerned about her family, Zhang Ermu trusted her. She had always been the one to take charge of their relationship. All he had to do was follow her lead and protect her.

Hugging her tightly, he whispered, “Okay, I will listen to you. I will talk to my parents and prepare the betrothal gifts. I will come with a matchmaker to propose properly.”

Liu Piao’s face lit up with joy and she replied, “Okay, I will wait for you.”
