Chapter 1186: She Is A Good Girl
Liu Piao and Zhang Ermu embraced for a long time as they were reluctant to part. When he was bitten by mosquitoes, Zhang Ermu finally let her go and said, “It’s late, go inside. I will come to find you again tomorrow.”
Liu Piao looked around and saw no one, so she stood on tiptoes and kissed his lips gently. After that, she turned around and ran towards the house.
Zhang Ermu smiled and touched his lips as he watched until Liu Piao disappeared into the house before climbing onto his cart and heading home. His heart is full of hope for their future.
When he reached home, the house was shrouded in darkness, with only a small oil lamp illuminating the living room.
After parking the cart inside the shed, he carried the items he had bought into the house and saw his mother dozing off while leaning on her chair. Seeing her, Zhang Ermu’s eyes softened.
He placed the items on the table and lightly patted his mother’s arm while whispering, “Mother, you should sleep in the room. You will catch a cold if you sleep here.”
Feeling the pat, Mother Zhang opened her eyes and looked at her son in a daze. After a moment, she regained her senses and said, “Ermu, you are back.”
Zhang Ermu nodded and said, “Mother, you should go to sleep.”
Mother Zhang rubbed her eyes before asking, “Have you eaten?”
“I haven’t, but I will make something to eat,” Zhang Ermu replied.
Standing up, Mother Zhang said, “You go take a bath. Mother will make egg noodles for you.”
Knowing that his mother had been waiting for him, Zhang Ermu didn’t refuse and said, “Mother, I will put these things in my room. You can check them tomorrow.”
Glancing at the fabric and cotton, Mother Zhang nodded. “Good.”
After his mother went to the kitchen, Zhang Ermu carried the fabric and cotton into his small room and lit the small oil lamp. Then, he went to the well to take a shower. The well water was cold, but it felt refreshing as it splashed onto his hot skin.
Every time he recalled being kissed by Liu Piao, he felt hot and restless. Shaking his head, he poured a bucket of water over himself to cool down.
With water dripping from his hair, he glanced at his lower body and muttered, “Zhang Ermu, stop thinking about that.”
He continued splashing cold water on himself for ten minutes before finally calming down. After changing into fresh clothes, he went to the kitchen, where his mother had finished cooking.
Seeing her son, Mother Zhang pointed to the low stool and said, “Ermu, sit down and eat.”
Hearing this, Zhang Ermu took his seat and accepted a bowl of hot noodles from his mother. As he ate, his mother sat across from him and asked, “Ermu, have you talked with Ah Piao?”
Zhang Ermu swallowed the noodles and nodded before he replied, “Mother, I talked to her. She explained what happened back then.”
Mother Zhang nodded and didn’t ask further. She wouldn’t ask until her son finished eating.
After finishing the noodles, Zhang Ermu drank a cup of warm water and explained, “Mother, the matter back then had nothing to do with Ah Piao. It was her father and stepmother who caused everything.”
“She didn’t come when her father visited us to break off the engagement because her stepmother locked her up at her stepmother’s parents’ house. By the time she escaped, the engagement was already broken.”
“Then why didn’t she come to find you?” Mother Zhang asked with a frown.
Hearing this, Zhang Ermu’s eyes turned cold as he replied, “Her stepmother told her you had found a good match for me and that I would be marrying in a month. She was hurt and angry, so she didn’t want to see me.”
“Before we could meet, she was forced to marry someone else. Their marriage was a deal. She ran away because that man needed an excuse to leave the village and be with his lover in the city.”
Mother Zhang was shocked at this information. She looked at her son and asked, “Ermu, do you mean she didn’t marry him?”
“They did get a marriage certificate because her father agreed to cut off their relationship if she married that man.”
“Ermu, if she has a marriage certificate, then even if you are with her, you would be seen as a third party. The government won’t recognize your marriage,” Mother Zhang said with concern.
Noticing her worry, Zhang Ermu smiled and explained, “Mother, when Ah Piao and that man met in the city, they already filed for divorce. He married his lover, and they have a son now. Ah Piao is single, though she is a divorcee.”

Mother Zhang let out a sigh at his words and said, “Ah Piao is such a pitiful child. After her mother passed away, her father beat and neglected her. With her stepmother around, she never had a good life.”
Zhang Ermu observed his mother carefully and asked, “Mother, you don’t mind her being a divorcee?”
Hearing the caution in his voice, Mother Zhang chuckled and asked her son back, “What’s there to mind? It’s not like she had any choice during that time.”
“As long as she treats you well, even if she had a son with that man, I would accept her. Not to mention, she kept her body and heart for you. She is a good girl. It would be a pity not to have her as a daughter-in-law.”
Zhang Ermu thought he would need to convince his mother. Unexpectedly, she was more open-minded than he expected. Feeling grateful, he held her hands and said, “Thank you, Mother.”
Patting his hands, Mother Zhang sighed and said, “You two were childhood sweethearts, and I watched her grow up. To say I didn’t hate her father for ruining your engagement would be a lie. But now that she is no longer tied to them, I’m relieved.”
“Tomorrow, I will find a matchmaker and prepare the betrothal gifts. Once everything is ready, we will propose to her,” she said with joy evident in her eyes.
