Chapter 1198: Mistaken Feelings
Zhang Yulan smiled, touched by her brother’s concern. Before asking about Liu Piao, he had asked about her well-being first. It made her feel reassured that what her friend said about her brother abandoning her after getting married was nonsense.
Nodding at her brother, she replied, “Brother, I’m fine. But Sister Liu Piao’s house was smashed. Fortunately, Teacher Lin wasn’t hurt. Otherwise, this matter could have escalated.”
Zhang Ermu frowned and asked, “How is she now?”
Knowing that her brother was asking about Liu Piao and not Lin Muai, Zhang Yulan replied, “Sister Liu Piao is alright.”
“The vice leader said he would inform the Huang family’s team leader and deduct their work points by 100 as punishment. He also asked Sister Liu Piao to calculate her losses so someone could collect compensation from the Huang family,” she added with a grin.
Noticing her sister’s eyes light up as she mentioned the vice leader, Zhang Ermu raised an eyebrow. After hesitating for a moment, he finally said, “Yulan, about your blind date with Bajie, I already spoke to him.”
Hearing this, Zhang Yulan asked, “Brother, did he agree?”
Shaking his head, Zhang Ermu replied, “He said he has no intention of getting married yet. So, he refused the blind date and told me not to delay your future.”
Hearing this, Zhang Yulan lowered her head in disappointment and continued washing clothes without a word. She had known for a long time that Bajie only saw her as a customer. It was just her own wishful thinking.
Seeing her like this, Zhang Ermu gently patted her shoulder and said, “Since he doesn’t have the same feeling as you, there is no need to force this relationship. From now on, you don’t need to get involved in selling mountain products.”
After speaking, he moved the roe deer into the woodshed, giving it some water and food to keep it alive. Then, he began cleaning the pheasants.
Distracted by her disappointment, Zhang Yulan didn’t notice her brother had brought back a living roe deer.
She thought she would feel heartbroken after being rejected. Surprisingly, while she did feel disappointed, it wasn’t as painful as she had expected. Other than a sense of pity, she felt no strong emotions.
‘Maybe I don’t like him as much as I thought,’ she thought with doubt.
As this thought crossed her mind, a realization dawned on her.
‘Did I mistake gratitude for romantic feelings?’ she wondered.
Though she couldn’t find a clear answer, the idea made her feel better. Perhaps her feelings for Bajie weren’t the same as her brother’s feelings for Liu Piao. Watching their relationship grow over time had made her yearn for something similar.
She didn’t know if she would be lucky enough to meet someone like her brother. But her mother once told her that only by becoming her best self could she find a good man.
If she didn’t keep improving, she might have to settle for someone average and that was the least she wanted. After thinking about it, she no longer felt disappointed.
Zhang Ermu glanced at his sister as he cleaned the pheasants. Seeing that she wasn’t as sad as he had thought she would be, he let out a sigh of relief.
Fearing that the prey left in the mountain would spoil if not processed, he quickened his movements. Once he was done, he quickly grabbed a bamboo basket filled with sacks, a boning knife, ropes, and a butcher knife, and headed to Father Li’s house.
Twenty minutes later, he arrived and saw Li Chenze picking vegetables in the garden. He knocked on the gate and called, “Brother Chenze.”
Hearing his voice, Li Chenze stopped what he was doing and asked in surprise, “Ermu, what brings you here?”
Noticing the bamboo basket, Li Chenze thought that his friend was here to ask for some vegetables. He opened the gate and said with a smile, “Come in.”
Walking into the yard, Zhang Ermu glanced at a basket of vegetables and asked, “Brother Chenze, are you busy?”
“I’ve got nothing to do, so I’m picking vegetables for my wife. What’s wrong? Do you need anything?” Li Chenze asked.
Hearing that he wasn’t busy, Zhang Ermu lowered his voice and said, “Brother Chenze, I do need your help.”
Noticing his friend’s serious tone, Li Chenze said, “Let’s talk inside.”
Once inside the living room, Li Chenze said, “Ermu, just tell me what you need help with.”
“Brother Chenze, my trap caught a wild boar and a bear. I need your help to slaughter them,” Zhang Ermu said directly.

Li Chenze was stunned when he heard his words. It took him a moment to process the words before he asked, “Ermu, did you just say you caught a bear?”
Zhang Ermu nodded and replied, “Brother Chenze, I know it’s hard to believe. But the prey was caught not long ago. I’m worried it will spoil in this hot weather if it isn’t processed soon, so I came to ask for your help.”
Seeing that his friend was serious, Li Chenze nodded. “I will go with you. Please wait a moment, I need to inform my wife.”
“Okay.”
While Zhang Ermu waited in the living room, Li Chenze went to find his wife. Entering the room, he saw his sons massaging their mother’s legs. His gaze softened at the sight and he walked to the bed.
Sitting at the edge of the Kang bed, he said, “Wife, I need to go to the mountain.”
When she heard his words, Zhang Dongmei looked at her husband in surprise. She glanced out the window and said, “Husband, the sun will set in a few hours. If you go now, won’t it be dark when you return?”
Holding her hands, Li Chenze reassured her, “Don’t worry. Ermu will be with me. We are going to the mountain to slaughter the wild boar and bear he caught. I will be back before sunset.”
As soon as he finished his words, Li Jingqian and Li Jingxu’s eyes widened in shock. They looked at their father and asked in unison, “Uncle Ermu caught a bear?”
