Chapter 1216: Asking For Help

However, now that his wife was two months pregnant, He Xieyu began to question whether allowing Feng Lin to stay with them would be the right decision.

Pregnancy was not easy, and if his wife experienced excessive stress, it could impact her health and jeopardize both her and the baby’s safety.

After weighing the pros and cons, he decided to observe how things unfolded. For now, his priority was clear–his wife.

Early the next morning, Li Chenmo woke up before dawn. After kissing his wife, he tidied himself up and left the room. When he arrived at the backyard, he saw his children already awake and washing their faces.

Hearing familiar footsteps, Dong Li turned around and greeted him, “Good morning, Father.”

Dong Huang looked up when she heard her brother. After spitting out toothpaste foam, she smiled and said, “Good morning, Father!”

“Good morning,” Li Chenmo replied as he walked to the pond.

Under the dim moonlight, the three of them squatted by the pond to wash up. When they were done, Li Chenmo said, “Xiao Li, just make a simple breakfast today. Your mother has morning sickness, so prepare some pickles for her.”

“Be careful with the fire and don’t hurt yourself,” Li Chenmo reminded him before heading to the pigpen.

“I understand, Father.” Dong Li replied with a nod.

Since his son had taken over cooking duties, he no longer asked him to help in the pigpen or mix the fertilizer. While Dong Li and Dong Huang busied themselves watering the garden, Li Chenmo went to the pigpen.

When he arrived, he found Chen Jianmin and Chen Jianguo already shoveling pig manure into a cart. His brothers hadn’t arrived yet, but the two boys were already working.

“Why did the two of you come so early?” he asked as he filled the pigs’ water basins and added feed.

“Good morning, Uncle Li,” the boys greeted him in unison.

“Ah Li said he wouldn’t be coming to help, so Jianguo and I came earlier to finish the work faster,” Chen Jianmin explained.

After a moment, Li Chenmo asked, “How are your studies going?”

Chen Jianmin’s eyes lit up the moment he heard his question. This was the first time Li Chenmo had shown interest in their progress. To him, this was a chance to impress and perhaps receive guidance.

“Uncle Li, I have already finished the fourth-grade curriculum. Right now, I’m borrowing Ah Li’s notebooks,” he answered calmly.

Not wanting to be left out, Chen Jianguo added, “Uncle Li, I’m working on the third-grade curriculum, but I’m not as smart as my brother and haven’t finished everything yet.”

Hearing this, Li Chenmo nodded and said, “Every day at noon, my children study with their cousins for a few hours. If you want to join them, come after school.”

Chen Jianmin’s face lit up with excitement the moment he heard his words. He quickly nodded and replied, “Thank you, Uncle Li! I will bring my brothers and sister to join the study group.”

Seeing his enthusiasm, Li Chenmo smiled and said, “Good.”

Not long after, Li Chenze and Li Lingyun arrived, and the conversation ended.

For now, Li chenmo chose not to share news of his wife’s pregnancy. It wasn’t about mistrust but caution. The first trimester was risky, and fewer people knowing meant less chance of trouble.

There are too many people who are jealous of his family. If someone with ill intentions learns that his wife is pregnant and does something to hurt her, it will be too late to regret. So, it’s better to wait until the fetus has stabilized.

When the sun began to rise, Lu Jueyu woke up. Sitting on the bed, she stared at the ceiling in a daze before she entered her space for a hot bath. Feeling refreshed, she exited and followed the tempting aroma wafting from the backyard.

As she entered the kitchen, she saw Dong Huang roasting honey sweet potatoes on the stove while Dong Li took steamed buns from the steamer.

Hearing footsteps, Dong Huang glanced up and saw her mother who was not looking at her, but at the roasted sweet potatoes. Noticing her mother swallow, Dong Huang lifted the basket of sweet potatoes and asked, “Mother, do you want some?”

Feeling a wave of hunger, Lu Jueyu didn’t refuse. She took one sweet potato and sat on a low stool by her daughter and started peeling it. As the skin came off, caramelized honey oozed from the golden flesh, making even Dong Huang’s mouth water.

Noticing her daughter’s expression, Lu Jueyu blew on the sweet potato and said, “Xiao Huang, take a bite.”

Dong Huang shook her head and replied, “Mother, you eat. My brother or sister must be hungry. Xiao Huang will eat later.”

“It’s okay, take a bite,” Lu Jueyu insisted with a smile.

Dong Huang hesitated but eventually took a bite, savoring the sweetness, she exclaimed, “Mother, it’s delicious!”

Lu Jueyu let out a chuckle before she took a bite herself. The two sat together, sharing the roasted sweet potatoes while tending to the fire. By the time they finished, Dong Li had finished cooking breakfast.

Meanwhile, at the pigpen, Li Chenmo was about to head home when his eldest brother called out, “Third Brother, wait a moment.”

Stopping in his tracks, he asked, “Eldest Brother, do you need something?”

Leaning closer, Li Chenze whispered, “Third brother, do you have time today?”

Raising an eyebrow, Li Chenmo asked, “Brother, why do you ask about this?”

“Ermu’s trap caught a brown bear two days ago, but we don’t know how to process the skin. You usually handle this for us, so he is asking for your help,” Li Chenze explained.

Nodding at his words, Li Chenmo said, “I can help with the skin, but I can’t teach him since I need to do it at a secluded place. If word gets out that he hunted a brown bear, it will bring trouble for all of us.”

“We will do as you say. I will have him bring the skin over shortly,” Li Chenze nodded.

“Okay.”

After their brief conversation, the two parted ways and returned to their homes.
