Chapter 1223: They Were Too Cute!
Inside the kitchen, Lu Jueyu was cooking Lychee Pork. Hearing footsteps, she turned around and saw her husband frowning as he walked over.
“Husband, what’s wrong? Why are you frowning like that?” she asked curiously.
Standing beside her, Li Chenmo looked at his wife and said unhappily, “Wife, didn’t we agree that either Xiao Li or I would do the cooking? What are you doing in the kitchen?”
Noticing his displeasure, Lu Jueyu softened her tone and said, “Husband, after drinking the spiritual herb powder, I feel full of energy and no longer unwell. I even feel better than usual.”
“If I just lay around all day, I would be bored to death,” she added with a pout.
Hearing her words, Li Chenmo sighed and replied, “Wife, don’t say such unlucky things.”
Lu Jueyu nodded and replied, “Okay, but you have to let me do some work. I promise not to overwork myself and to rest if I feel dizzy or tired.”
Li Chenmo looked at his wife for a long time and knew that even if he didn’t agree, she would do whatever she wanted. In that case, let her do it. At least this way, she wouldn’t overwork herself.
As he made up his mind, he nodded and said, “Okay.”
Lu Jueyu beamed and said, “Thank you, Husband!”
Since they had reached an agreement, Li Chenmo didn’t nag any further. Instead, he took out two layered bamboo baskets from the cabinet and began scooping the dishes onto several bowls.
Besides the Lychee Pork, his wife had also made Mapo Tofu, stir-fried Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, vegetable salad, and egg fried rice.
She had prepared a generous amount of food, with each dish placed in a large basin. Considering the size of Chen Jianmin’s family, he filled the bowls to the brim before placing them into the bamboo basket.
Since there were four dishes plus a staple, he gave them two bowls of egg fried rice with each bowl of side dish. With this amount, it should be enough for the Chen family. If not, they could always add some mantou or pancakes and have a full meal.
When he stepped out of the kitchen, he saw Chen Jianmin and Chen Jianguo chatting with Dong Li. Walking over, he handed them the bamboo baskets and said, “Be careful on your way back.”
Accepting the baskets, Chen Jianmin nodded. “Thank you, Uncle Li. We will come again tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
After leaving the Li residence, Chen Jianguo glanced at his brother and said, “Brother, my basket is really heavy. How about yours?”
Chen Jianmin weighed them in his hands and replied, “They are about the same. It looks like Uncle Li gave us a lot of food.”
Hearing this, Chen Jianguo asked in a low voice, “Brother, we only helped for a few hours. Is it really okay for us to accept this much?”
Patting his younger brother’s shoulder, Chen Jianmin said, “Since Uncle Li gave it to us, we should accept it. If you feel bad about it, then study hard and work even harder tomorrow.”
“Rather than refusing the food, it’s better to repay his kindness by proving the results of his guidance by getting a good rank in the exam. Only when we become strong and capable can we truly help him in return. In the future, if Uncle Li ever needs help, we must be there for him. Do you understand?”
Chen Jianguo thought about his brother’s words for a moment before nodding. Looking at the sunset, he said firmly, “Brother, I will never forget Uncle Li’s kindness to our family.”
“Good. Now, let’s hurry back—the food won’t taste as good once it’s cold,” Chen Jianmin said.
While the two brothers rushed home, Li Chenmo and Dong Li were busy serving dinner, while Lu Jueyu went to call Dong Huang.
She walked to the river near their backyard and saw her daughter fishing with Feng Lin. Waving at them, she called out, “Xiao Huang, come home for dinner!”
Hearing her mother’s voice, Dong Huang waved back and replied, “Mother, I’m coming!”
Before leaving, she moved two fish from her basket into Feng Lin’s and handed him a small flashlight. She leaned closer and whispered, “Ah Lin, this is for you. If the battery runs out, just leave it under the sunlight for a few hours, and it will work again.”
Feng Lin looked at the flashlight in surprise and asked, “Xiao Huang, where did you get this?”
“My father gave it to me. I heard it’s usually only given to soldiers, so it’s really high quality and you couldn’t buy it even if you have money and a coupon,” she said proudly.

Hearing this, Feng Lin quickly tried to return it as he said, “Xiao Huang, this is too valuable—I can’t accept it. You should keep it for yourself.”
Dong Huang simply stuffed the flashlight into his pocket and asked, “Ah Lin, do you see me as a family?”
Without hesitation, Feng Lin nodded and replied, “Of course!”
Satisfied with his answer, Dong Huang smiled and explained, “Since we are family, what’s mine is yours, and what’s yours is mine. You can use the flashlight without worry. If I need it, I will ask you for it. The sky will be dark soon, so you need it more than I do.”
After hearing her reasoning, Feng Lin stopped refusing and accepted the gift. He nodded and said, “Alright then, I will head back now. See you tomorrow, Xiao Huang.”
“Be careful on your way home, and don’t forget to keep the fish in water,” Dong Huang reminded him.
“Got it,” Feng Lin smiled and replied good-naturedly.
Standing at the backyard gate, Lu Jueyu watched the two children interact like little adults and couldn’t help but smile. They were too cute!
Once Feng Lin left, Dong Huang ran toward her mother. She held up her basket and said, “Mother, I caught a fish for the baby. Do you think the baby will like fish soup?”
