Male Lead's Canon Fodder Wife - Chapter 1278
Chapter 1278: Choosing Dates
Waving her hand dismissively, Zhang Yulan said, “Brother An, it’s fine to joke around with us, but you shouldn’t say things like that to others so carelessly. If someone takes you seriously, you will be in trouble.”
Zhang Ermu glanced between his sister’s awkward smile and An Xuyuan’s dark expression. Then, a sudden realization hit him. A knowing smile tugged at his lips as he observed the two.
An Xuyuan didn’t notice that someone was observing him and was lost in his thoughts. With the atmosphere turning awkward, none of them spoke.
After lunch, An Xuyuan packed up the bamboo basket and strode toward the field without saying a word. Seeing Zhang Yulan’s nonchalant attitude, he felt a little annoyed. So, he didn’t want to talk to her right now.
Watching him leave, Zhang Yulan shook her head and muttered, “What a moody man.”
Turning to her brother, she asked, “Brother, did we say something wrong? He looked angry.”
Hearing her words, Zhang Ermu sighed, flicked her forehead, and said, “It’s not ‘we’—it’s you.”
Frowning at his words, Zhang Yulan asked, “What did I say?”
“You figure it out yourself.”
After saying those words, Zhang Ermu walked off, leaving his sister glaring after him.
Leaning against the tree trunk, Zhang Yulan let out a sigh and said, “Men ah… their hearts are harder to understand than the deep sea.”
Since she couldn’t make sense of their confusing behavior, she decided not to dwell on it. Rather than overthinking, it was better to focus on something important—like what to eat for dinner.
With that thought, she packed up their baskets and returned to work. They were almost done harvesting the wheat field. If they worked faster, they might be able to finish everything today.
Just thinking about the full warehouse at home made her whole body full of energy.
While An Xuyuan was troubled by his confusion and annoyance, Aunt Lin and Zhang Ermu’s parents were sitting in the Liu family’s living room.
It had been four days since he told Liu Piao that he would ask his family to visit her family to discuss the proposal, and today was the day they were free to do so.
Sensing the awkward atmosphere in the air, Aunt Lin wiped the sweat off her forehead with her sleeve while racking her brain.
After a moment, she took a sip of tea and said with a smile, “Brother Liu, Sister-in-law, we are here today to discuss the children’s matters. I wonder if Ah Piao notified you in advance?”
Hearing this, Mother Liu nodded and replied, “Ah Piao already told us about this.”
She then looked at the Zhang couple and said, “Brother Zhang, Sister-in-law, we all know about the past between your family and my brother-in-law’s family. What happened back then was indeed the Liu family’s fault, and we apologize to you.”
Father Zhang remained silent as he sipped his tea, while Mother Zhang’s expression softened slightly at her words.
She looked at Mother Liu and said with a sigh, “To be honest, our family still holds a grudge against your Liu family. But my husband and I understand that what happened back then wasn’t your family fault.”
“Ah Piao is also a victim in that matter, and our family no longer blames her. My son and Ah Piao have deep feelings for each other, and we hope your family will give them your blessing.”
Nodding at her words, Mother Liu sighed and said helplessly, “Ah Piao is a stubborn child. All these years, she has insisted on waiting for Ermu. Since they are no longer young, it’s indeed time for them to settle down.”
Hearing this, Aunt Lin’s eyes lit up. She had expected today’s discussion to be difficult because of the past conflicts between the two families.
She had even prepared persuasive arguments in case of rejection from the Liu family. However, things were progressing much more smoothly than she had anticipated.
Pulling a calendar from her bag, she asked, “Then how about we check the dates?”
Seeing the calendar, both Mother Liu and Mother Zhang smiled and nodded. Meanwhile, Father Liu and Father Zhang simply sat quietly, allowing their wives to handle the details.
After carefully reviewing the dates, Mother Zhang finally said, “I think August 8th would be a good day for the engagement, and August 13th for the wedding. In-laws, what do you think?”
Mother Liu understood that since the couple was older, it was best to finalize the marriage quickly.

Though the wedding date was a little bit hasty, they had been preparing for Liu Piao’s dowry for years. Now that she was finally marrying the man she loved, there was no need to delay the matter any further. It was time to give her what had been set aside for her.
As for the wedding banquet, it was the groom’s family’s responsibility. Since they suggested the dates, it meant they were prepared.
After she considered the situation, Mother Liu nodded and said, “These dates sound good. In-law, we will go with your choice.”
Mother Zhang smiled and said, “In-law, if you have any specific requests, please let us know. We will do our best to fulfill them.”
Knowing the Zhang family’s situation, Mother Liu didn’t have any extravagant demands and replied, “There is no need for anything expensive. Just follow the standard customs.”
Mother Zhang’s impression of them improved when she heard this.
Compared to Liu Piao’s biological father who treated her as a commodity to earn money, her uncle’s family had treated her like their own daughter. They were always considering what was best for her—including the Zhang family’s circumstances.
Nodding at her words, she said, “Alright.”
After finalizing the important details, Father Zhang finally spoke, “Brother Liu, there are a lot of things we need to take care of, so we will take our leave now.”
Understanding that they would be busy preparing for the wedding, Father Liu stood up and said, “Brother Zhang, we will look forward to your next visit.”
