Chapter 1284: Good Husband, Smart Wife
Along the way to the hospital, Wang Muxiao felt contractions once in a while. Compared to before, the pain was not as intense—she only experienced a bit of backache and soreness.

For her, the contractions were similar to period cramps, so she remained relaxed during the trip. When the sun rose in the eastern horizon, she rubbed her stomach and said, “Husband, can you get me breakfast? I’m hungry.”

Hearing her words, Lu Cheng was stunned. He looked at his wife and said, “Wife, we are in the middle of the road, and there is no store nearby. Where should I buy breakfast for you?”

“Didn’t my sister-in-law pack some scallion pancakes and steamed meat buns for us? Just give me those,” Wang Muxiao said.

Just the thought of fragrant scallion pancakes and delicious steamed buns made her mouth water.

Lu Cheng saw her expression and stopped the bicycle. He walked to the side and took out a cloth bundle, carrying it to his wife before opening it.

Inside was a thermos flask and a package wrapped in oil paper. He untied the package and found five scallion pancakes and eight steamed buns. Opening the thermos flask, he smelled the fragrance of the herbal chicken soup.

He handed the thermos to his wife and said, “Wife, drink some chicken soup first before you eat.”

“Thank you, Husband,” Wang Muxiao said and took the thermos.

After drinking several sips, she handed it to her husband and said, “Husband, you drink some too.”

Lu Cheng knew his wife was stubborn, so he didn’t refuse and took a few sips. Even after just three sips, the cold in his body dissipated. The ginger in the soup warmed him from the inside.

After closing the thermos, he placed it beside his wife and took a scallion pancake. As he rode the bicycle, he would take bites of the pancake.

Along the way, they chatted and ate together. If not for the occasional frown on his wife’s face, he might have forgotten that she was experiencing contractions and that they were on their way to the hospital.

Two hours later, they finally arrived at the county hospital. When the security guard saw them, he quickly walked over and asked, “Comrade, is your wife going into labor?”

Lu Cheng nodded and replied, “My wife is having contractions, so we decided to come early.”

The security guard nodded and went to call a nurse. Not long after, he returned with one.

When the nurse saw the bicycle, she smiled and said, “Comrade, you can park your bicycle first. I will help your wife register.”

Lu Cheng nodded and said gratefully, “Thank you, Comrade.”

Having a nurse register for them will be faster than if they handle it themselves.

While the nurse supported his wife and led her into the hospital, Lu Cheng rode the bicycle to the parking lot. After locking it, he slung two cloth bags over his shoulder and carried two bamboo baskets in his hands.

As he passed the guard post, he set down the bamboo baskets and took out a scallion pancake, wrapping it in oil paper. Then, he knocked on the guard post’s window.

“Comrade, thank you for your help earlier,” he said with a smile.

“Comrade, this is my duty,” the guard replied politely.

After nodding at him, Lu Cheng placed the pancake on the desk through the window and left before the guard could refuse.

The guard chuckled as he watched Lu Cheng hurry away. He had helped many people, but it was rare for someone to thank him, let alone give him something in return. Feeling curious, he opened the oil paper and saw the pancake.

The scallion pancake was as big as a plate and filled with scallions. He took a bite and was surprised to find meat inside.

The oil used wasn’t lard but had a nutty fragrance. If this pancake were sold in a state-owned restaurant, it would probably be expensive.

He ate the pancake while thinking that young people these days really knew how to enjoy life and were willing to spend money.

Inside the hospital, after registering Wang Muxiao, the nurse helped her move into a six-person ward. When Lu Cheng entered the room after asking for the room number, the other patients and their families looked at him.

Seeing how much he was carrying, some women cast envious glances at Wang Muxiao. Even when they had given birth to sons, their husbands had never treated them this well.

They had only been allowed to give birth in the hospital after making a big fuss or because the midwife didn’t dare to help them due to their health conditions or baby’s position. Now, seeing someone with a loving husband, they couldn’t help but feel envious.

Unaware of their gazes, Lu Cheng stored the cloth bags in the cabinet and placed the bamboo baskets beside the bed. Their bed was in the corner near the window, so he just put the baskets on the ground. Since there was no air conditioner, the window was open for better ventilation.

Fearing that his wife might catch a cold, he covered her with a thin blanket and said, “Wife, I will go pay the deposit first. There is still some chicken soup left—if you are hungry, drink it.”

“Okay,” Wang Muxiao nodded.

After making sure his wife was comfortable, Lu Cheng finally left the room.

Not long after, a young woman in the next bed looked at Wang Muxiao and said, “Sister-in-law, you have a good husband.”

Hearing this, Wang Muxiao smiled and replied, “My husband is very caring and gentle. It’s my blessing to have married him.”

The young woman had expected her to brag about her husband or show off her dominance in the relationship. Unexpectedly, she didn’t follow the script. Instead, she praised her husband and humbly acknowledged her fortune.

The women in the ward exchanged knowing glances. This woman was smart and wise. Only a foolish wife would belittle her husband in public.
