“I see the head! Push one more time!” The doctor encouraged her.

Taking a deep breath, Wang Muxiao let out another scream as she pushed, “Ahhhh!”

Within seconds, she felt something slippery leaving her body, and the pain lessened by more than half. A wave of relief washed over her as she knew that her baby had finally arrived in this world.

The doctor quickly took the baby, cut the umbilical cord, and handed the newborn to a nurse. Then, she looked at Wang Muxiao and said, “There is another one. Comrade, keep going.”

Wang Muxiao chewed on the ginseng and swallowed more of its juice before another wave of pain hit. This time, the process was much easier. With just one more push, another baby slid out of her body.

The doctor moved quickly and skillfully, cutting the umbilical cord before handing the second baby to a nurse. The nurses brought the newborns to Wang Muxiao and placed them on her chest.

“Comrades, congratulations! Both children are boys,” the nurse said with a smile.

Looking at her babies, still covered in blood and other fluids, Wang Muxiao shed tears of joy and kissed their tiny heads.

Shortly after, the nurses took the babies away so the doctor could check on them.

Leaning over her, Lu Cheng kissed his wife’s forehead and cried as he whispered, “Thank you, Xiaoxiao. You have worked so hard. This will be the last time. We won’t have more children.”

Wang Muxiao was exhausted and sleepy, but she still nodded and said, “Okay.”

As they cried and laughed together, the doctor checked Wang Muxiao’s condition and saw that the placenta had been delivered. She instructed the nurses to clean her up before going to check on the babies.

She performed a physical examination, administered necessary injections, and ran some tests to assess their health. Then, she cleaned their umbilical cord stumps and wiped their bodies.

Once the babies were wrapped in three layers of clean fabric to keep them warm, she placed identification tags on them and had the nurses carry them to the small beds prepared for them.

With her work done, the doctor left the labor room, changed her clothes, and washed her hands—another woman was waiting to deliver her baby.

After the nurses finished cleaning Wang Muxiao’s body, one of them said, “Comrade, the doctor will come to check on you and your babies later.”

Nodding at the nurse, Wang Muxiao said, “Thank you.”

“We will transfer you to your ward now. You can feed your babies once you are settled,” another nurse added with a smile.

Meanwhile, Lu Cheng had already removed the medical gown, mask, cap, and gloves. He stood outside the labor room, waiting anxiously.

When he saw the nurse pushing his wife out, he quickly walked over and held her hand. Seeing that his wife was sleeping, he walked beside the wheel stretcher but said nothing.

As they entered the ward, the other patients’ families were visiting. Seeing them, they looked on with curiosity.

Mother Lu, Lu Han, and Chen Anwen were already waiting in the ward. When they saw them return, they heaved a sigh of relief.

Compared to the previous times, Wang Muxiao took longer to give birth after her water broke this time, so they were worried and anxious. Now, seeing her back, their worried hearts finally settled.

When they reached the bed, the nurses were getting ready to move Wang Muxiao from the stretcher. Since his wife was sleeping, Lu Cheng said, “Comrade, let me do it.”

Afterward, he bent down and carried his wife sideways, lifting her from the stretcher and gently placing her on the bed.

Because there would be some discharge from Wang Muxiao’s body, Mother Lu had already prepared waterproof fabric and covered the bed with it. On top of the fabric was a layer of cotton cloth to absorb the liquid.

These things were given to her second daughter-in-law by her daughter, and she found them in the bamboo basket.

After Lu Cheng placed his wife down, he covered her body with a thin blanket before saying, “Mother, Xiaoxiao gave birth to twins—both boys.”

When the Lu family heard this news, they were overjoyed, while the other people in the ward were full of envy.

Mother Lu shed tears of joy as she said, “As long as both mother and children are safe and sound, that’s what matters.”

The nurses smiled and said, “Comrade, we will bring over your babies so they can have their meal.”

After the nurses left the ward, Chen Anwen said, “Mother, my husband and I will go back to the village first. We will come back later.”

Mother Lu nodded and said, “You should go back and take care of the children. Just let Ah Han send the food over.”

Chen Anwen knew that she needed to stay home to take care of the children and prepare her father-in-law’s meal. So she nodded and said, “Then I will make chicken soup for my sister-in-law.”

“Today, just steam some rice. We need to celebrate the birth of our family’s children,” Mother Lu said.

After the two of them left, carrying empty bamboo baskets, Lu Cheng went to get a basin of hot water. When he returned, the nurses had already brought over the babies to his wife.

Seeing his wife wake up, he says, “Wife, I will help wipe your body first.”

Wang Muxiao nodded and handed the babies to Mother Lu.

Mother Lu placed the babies in their crib before pulling the curtain to block others’ view. Before feeding the babies, they need to have their bodies cleaned first to ensure the babies’ health.
