Chapter 1401: Keeping Distance ( 2 )
Hearing her husband’s words, Zhang Damu’s wife could only grit her teeth and turn her head away, unwilling to look at Zhang Yulan.

“Yulan, I know you have misunderstandings toward me and your sister-in-law, and you are closer to your second brother. But no matter how much you dislike us, we are still your family. Shouldn’t you at least show us some respect?” Zhang Damu said.

When she heard this, Zhang Yulan laughed in anger. She looked at her eldest brother and said, “Brother, you know clearly in your heart what you and your wife have done all these years. Now you still have the face to lecture me. I don’t know if I have to praise you for being forgetful or for being thick skin!”

While they were exchanging sharp words outside, inside the room, Zhang Ermu and Liu Piao heard them clearly.

Noticing that the situation might escalate into a quarrel, Liu Piao said, “Husband, let’s go out and take a look.”

Zhang Ermu knew what his brother’s intention was for coming today and didn’t want to meet him. But thinking that today was his wedding day, he pushed down his irritation and nodded.

When the two of them came out from the bedroom, they saw Zhang Yulan glaring at Zhang Damu and his wife as if she was facing enemies and ready to fight.

Seeing this, Liu Piao walked over and said with a smile, “Eldest brother and eldest sister-in-law are here. Why are the two of you standing? Please have a seat.”

Hearing this, Zhang Damu and his wife turned to look at her.

They observed her from head to toe before Zhang Damu’s wife said, “Second brother, second sister-in-law, congratulations on your marriage. My family had work to do in the morning and could only come now to help. We apologize for coming late.”

Liu Piao let out a chuckle and replied casually, “Eldest sister-in-law is a guest. There is no reason to ask a guest to help out when my family is hosting a banquet.”

After she said these words, she poured a cup of tea for them and added, “My husband has lots of friends and my family is here. We have more than enough help with the wedding banquet. So, there is no need to bother my sister-in-law with this small matter.”

Zhang Damu’s wife was stunned by her words. With this, Liu Piao had blocked her next move of letting her daughters help with the banquet and also distanced their families.

As a family, they could have treated this place as their own. But as guests, they couldn’t even go to the backyard.

Liu Piao’s words limited their movements instantly. As guests, it was also impossible for them to bring up the topic of borrowing money and food during the wedding banquet.

Seeing that they were still standing, Liu Piao asked, “Eldest brother, eldest sister-in-law, why don’t you take a seat? If you find the house small and stuffy, you can sit in the yard. There is a roof, so it won’t be too hot outside.”

The moment she said this, Zhang Damu quickly sat down and said, “Second sister-in-law, we are family. How could we sit outside like other guests?”

“Eldest brother is right. Even though we have separate household registries, after all, we come from the same ancestor. Even as guests, you and your family should sit inside with our parents,” Liu Piao said with a smile.

Mother Zhang and Father Zhang sipped their tea as they watched their second daughter-in-law have a battle of words with their eldest son’s family.

Even if they wanted to have nothing to do with them, Zhang Damu was still their son, and it would ruin Zhang Ermu’s reputation if they treated his brother rudely.

Based on Liu Piao’s words, she would treat them as family but would show a clear distance. Since they had separated their household registries, no matter how good the second branch’s living conditions were, it had nothing to do with the first branch.

Zhang Ermu smiled when he heard his wife’s words and said, “Eldest brother, since you and your family are here, then stay and join the wedding banquet before you go back.”

After he said this, he held his wife’s hand and said, “Eldest brother, my wife is tired, so we will retire to our room. You can have a talk with our parents first.”

With that, he turned and returned to his bedroom with his wife. Since her second brother had said so, Zhang Yulan also had no objection, but she was unwilling to have anything to do with her eldest brother’s family.

So, she stood up and said, “Mother, Father, I will go help Sister Jueyu.”

When there were only Zhang Damu’s family and his parents left in the living room, Zhang Damu glanced at his sons.

Receiving his signal, his eldest son quickly said, “Grandpa, Grandma, how have you been? It’s been a while since we came to visit. I miss you so much.”

Hearing this, Mother Zhang’s eyes softened as she beckoned her eldest grandson over and said, “Come over and let your grandma take a look at you.”

Zhang Dazhi stood up and walked over. Standing in front of his grandma, he said, “Grandma, I heard that you were sick a few days ago and wanted to come visit you.”

“But the family had no grains at home, so Father and I had to go to the mountains to find some food. That’s why I couldn’t come to visit you. I’m sorry, Grandma.”

When Mother Zhang heard her grandson’s words, she felt heartache. But recalling what her eldest son said and did to her second son on his last visit, she swallowed back the comforting words.

While the eldest son’s family struggled to have food on the table, her second son was not better off.

Not only did he have to take care of his grandparents and parents, but he also had to take care of his unmarried sister. Compared to the eldest son, her second son was struggling more.
