Chapter 1453: Donating Seeds ( 1 )
After An Xuyuan left, Zhang Yulan stood still, watching his retreating back in a daze. She touched the spot on her forehead and muttered, “You can just talk. Why did you have to touch my head?”

Though she grumbled, the corners of her lips curved up without her realizing it.

After leaving the Zhang family’s house, An Xuyuan rode his bicycle and went to Li Chenmo’s house. Standing outside the gate, he pulled at the rope and heard the crisp sound of bells coming from inside.

He waited for a while before the gate was opened, and Li Chenmo appeared from behind. Standing in front of him, he asked, “Comrade An, what a rare visit. Do you need anything?”

An Xuyuan nodded and said, “Comrade Li, I heard that you and your brothers get lots of grains from the mountains. I came to ask if it’s possible for you to exchange the grains with the production team.”

Hearing this, Li Chenmo raised his eyebrows and said, “Comrade An, let’s talk inside.”

An Xuyuan pushed his bicycle inside and parked it beside the entrance. The moment he raised his head, he was surprised by the greenhouses.

He had learned about Li Chenmo’s attempt to build greenhouses by replacing some of the materials. But so far, no one knows the result.

This was the first time he came to visit his house and realized that the size of this house was far larger than what he thought. By rules, this kind of house wouldn’t be allocated to a villager but would be used by the production team as public property.

But thinking about the Li family’s contribution in recent years and also Li Chenmo’s background as a retired Captain in the military, he chose to close an eye to how Han Yuheng handled the matter.

As they walked, Li Chenmo noticed his interest in the greenhouses and asked, “Comrade An, do you want to visit the greenhouse?”

Hearing this, An Xuyuan was taken aback and asked, “Can I?”

“I plan to report the result to the production team and the brigade after I collect more data. So, it’s good if you can come and help me check the crops,” Li Chenmo replied with a smile.

The two of them walked to the nearest greenhouses. There were three small greenhouses and one medium greenhouse. He showed him the medium greenhouse.

Opening the door, he said, “This greenhouse’s size is 300 square meters, and my family used intercropping and planted radish and peas.”

When he entered the greenhouse, An Xuyuan was stunned by the scene in front of him.

With the change of weather, he thought that it would be hard to grow the vegetables. Unexpectedly, not only were the vegetables thriving, they even seemed bigger than usual. The radishes were planted in between the peas.

An Xuyuan walked toward the soil and noticed that the soil was different from the production team’s farmland. He squatted beside the soil and grabbed a handful.

After he looked for a while, he turned to Li Chenmo and asked, “Comrade Li, where did you get this soil from?”

“I brought back this soil from the mountains. I have compared the soil from the mountains and the production team’s farmland. Out of the two, the mountain’s soil has better quality and needs less fertilizing,” Li Chenmo replied calmly.

Hearing this, An Xuyuan nodded and put the soil down. As he patted his hands, he said, “The soil’s quality is indeed better than the production team’s farmland. I don’t know if it’s possible to get some soil back from the mountains and use it to improve the farmland’s soil quality.”

Li Chenmo thought for a moment and said, “It might be hard. After all, the amount of soil needed to improve the farmland is very high.”

After a moment of pause, he continued, “Comrade An, my wife and I are currently using some rotten leaves and leftovers from fruit peels and vegetable roots to make another type of fertilizer called compost. We used it on our greenhouses, and so far, the result was not worse than using manure as fertilizer.”

“Oh? Can this compost improve the soil’s quality?” An Xuyuan asked.

Li Chenmo smiled and replied, “Compared to the fertilizer made from pig manure, the result is almost equal. In my opinion, using compost is better since it doesn’t have the potential of nutrient burn, so it can be used more liberally compared to the pig manure.”

“What’s more, compost doesn’t have to be aged and can provide more balanced nutrients over time. It is also ready for use since it has fully decomposed.”

When An Xuyuan heard this, he asked, “Comrade Li, do you have more of this compost?”

Li Chenmo nodded and said, “My family still has around 300 sacks of compost. If we want more, we need to go to the mountains to gather them.”

After hearing his words, An Xuyuan went into a long silence before he said, “Can I see the compost?”

“Sure, this way please,” Li Chenmo nodded and gestured for him to follow.

The two of them went to the backyard, and Li Chenmo took a sack of compost from the corner.

As he showed the compost to An Xuyuan, he said, “If the production team needs it, you can take them and use it. We already fertilized the greenhouse and don’t need to do it for a few months.”

An Xuyuan was surprised by his words but didn’t reject his offer. He nodded and said, “Then, I will ask the staff to come and transport the compost.”

“About the grains you and your brothers harvested from the mountains, can we exchange them for other grains?” he asked.

This time, Li Chenmo went silent for a long time before he asked, “Comrade An, why do you need to get the grains from the mountains?”

“To tell you the truth, the winter wheat seeds sent by the capital this time can’t be used for planting. The seeds we used to plant this time were exchanged with Zhang Ermu’s family and found in the mountain,” An Xuyuan replied.

The moment he heard this, Li Chenmo understood instantly and said, “So, you want to find more seeds for next year’s planting?”
