After hearing Li Chenmo’s explanation, An Xuyuan fell silent. He was too stunned to speak. He never expected Li Chenmo, a retired soldier, to do something that violated the law.

But considering the circumstances, he realized that as a man, it was only natural for him to do whatever it took to ensure his family was well-fed. Putting himself in Li Chenmo’s shoes, An Xuyuan realized he would have done the same for his own wife and children.

Seeing this, An Xuyuan said, “I can’t accept this. You should keep it for your wife and children.”

Li Chenmo placed the bamboo basket in the front basket of An Xuyuan’s bicycle and said, “These were grown in the greenhouses. Comrade An, take them back and have a taste. My family has already tried them. The taste is much better than those grown in the fields.”

Not long after An Xuyuan left, Lu Jueyu woke up from her nap and walked outside. Seeing her husband returning from the front yard, she asked, “Husband, did someone come just now?”

Li Chenmo nodded and said, “The vice team leader came to ask about the grain we harvested from the mountain.”

“Why did he suddenly ask about it?” she asked in confusion.

Seeing his wife’s dazed expression, Li Chenmo chuckled and held her hand. As he led her to the backyard balcony, he said, “He came to ask if we were willing to exchange the mountain grains for work points.”

“But we just finished planting the winter wheat. What seeds does he want?” Lu Jueyu asked with a frown.

“The seeds sent from the capital are unusable. This time, they used the winter wheat seeds from the mountains. So, he wants to prepare the rice seeds early in case the capital sends poor-quality ones again next year,” Li Chenmo explained.

When they reached the balcony, Li Chenmo helped his wife sit and poured her a cup of water before adding, “I agreed to help him.”

Lu Jueyu thought for a moment before asking, “Husband, how did he know to come to you? Did he find out what we did in the mountains?”

Li Chenmo gestured for his wife to drink first, then replied, “He must have heard that we got grains from the mountains. Since we can’t really hide this, I just told him that we cultivated the land ourselves, but no one else knows.”

Hearing her husband’s words, Lu Jueyu was taken aback and asked, “Husband, will telling him this bring trouble to us?”

Li Chenmo shook his head and replied with a smile, “He needs our help now, so he won’t act against us. I trust my judgment. An Xuyuan is a man of principle. Since he promised to keep our secret, he won’t go back on his word.”

As he gently tidied her hair, he continued, “While cultivating land without permission is technically a crime, we didn’t do it for personal gain. I think he might even help us cover our tracks, hoping we will keep cultivating the mountain land and help the production team.”

Lu Jueyu thought over his words for a while before sighing and said, “Since you trust him, I will follow your decision.”

“When will they come to take the seeds?” she asked.

“They might come tomorrow,” Li Chenmo said. “Also, I showed him the greenhouses and the compost from your space. He will send his men later to transport the compost.”

Hearing this, Lu Jueyu gave her husband a sidelong glance and said, “You sure are busy while I’m sleeping.”

Li Chenmo laughed at his wife’s reaction and replied, “Wife, didn’t you say we need to help more people so your space can be upgraded? I’m just weighing the pros and cons. Don’t worry, everything will be fine.”

Lu Jueyu sighed again and said, “Alright.”

After their discussion, Li Chenmo prepared some food for his wife to cushion her stomach, then went out to visit his brothers. Although he didn’t need their grain, they still needed to coordinate their stories.

Once her husband left, Lu Jueyu filled the underground cellar with more rice seeds. Worried they might spoil over time, she mixed in some spiritual herb powder to prolong their shelf life.

As for An Xuyuan, the moment he reached the production team’s office, he called the staff in for a meeting. Once everyone had arrived, he said, “Everyone, I have found the seeds for next year’s planting.”

The staff were visibly surprised by his words and one of them asked, “Vice team leader, did the Zhang family find another wheat field?”

An Xuyuan shook his head and said, “This time, it’s the Li family who will help us. They found three paddy fields deep in the mountains and managed to harvest them. I have checked the quality and it’s the rare hybrid variety.”

“Vice team leader, since they found the paddy fields, shouldn’t they have reported them to the production team? Hoarding grain like that is against the law,” one man said with a frown.

“The brigade has already decided not to claim the mountain areas. So, going into the mountains isn’t illegal,” An Xuyuan replied.
