Knowing that the news of his visit to Li Chenmo had spread in the village, Father Su did not intend to hide the matter, and said, “I don’t know his name. I went there to make friends with him, because I’m interested in his house and his skill on farming.”

“Is that so? Father-in-law, do you really not know that he is Li Chenmo?” Da Gao looked at him doubtfully and asked.

Father Su nodded and said, “If I knew he was Li Chenmo, I would never go to his house, let alone make friends with him.”

Da Gao observed him for a while, but saw no emotions except anger and regret. Since his father-in-law didn’t know that the house was Li Chenmo’s, he wouldn’t blame him anymore. After all, he doesn’t live in this village, so it’s normal for him to not know how Li Chenmo looks.

“Father-in-law, you must be tired. My mother-in-law is cooking. You rest for a while and we will have lunch together.” Da Gao said.

After what happened this morning, Father Su did feel tired and hungry. So, he just nodded to Da Gao. Walking to the backyard, he washed off the dirt on his body, and changed his clothes.

When he finished washing up, he found that his wife, daughter, and son-in-law were already waiting for him in the living room.

Da Gao saw him coming and said, “Father-in-law, let’s eat first while the food is hot.”

Father Su sat down next to his wife and looked at the food. He frowned when he saw the thin coarse grain porridge and a small plate of pickled radish.

He picked up the bowl and said, “Let’s eat.”

When he took a sip of the porridge, he felt extremely sick, but he could only force himself to eat it. He was so hungry since they only have two meals a day and this is his first meal for today. He could only eat later in the evening. So, he must eat if he wants to survive.

He and his wife have been in this village for eight days. Every day, they can only eat the same thing. Not only does it taste terrible, it doesn’t fill their stomach at all. At most it can only relieve some hunger.

While he was eating, he thought of the fresh vegetables he saw at Li Chenmo’s house. Since he rejected his kindness, Li Chenmo could only blame himself for his misfortune.

After they finished eating, Mother Su cleared the table and washed the dishes, while Su Anna went to the bedroom. She was still too weak to do any work, so her mother left her to recuperate.

Seeing her entering the bedroom, Da Gao smiled obscenely and followed her while rubbing his palms.
