Chapter 105: Chapter 105: Your parents were killed
Sylvester spent most of his time in his room, lost in thought. The news about Winter making headlines left him pondering, but he was relieved that nothing major had happened to her.
A sudden knock on the door pulled him from his thoughts. He looked up as Lilac entered, making her way toward him.
“Why haven’t you had your dinner, Grandpa?” She asked, taking a seat across from him on the couch.
Despite often disagreeing with Sylvester’s constant need to control their lives, Lilac would never want him to neglect himself just because he was upset over something.
“Why did Damien break up with you? Did you do something to make him run away?” Sylvester’s sharp gaze pierced through her, demanding an explanation.
For once, he had been pleased to see Lilac getting serious about her future, choosing a man who could provide her with every luxury in life. But that satisfaction was short-lived when Damien’s parents suddenly informed them of their decision to call off the engagement.
Lilac didn’t waver under his scrutiny and held his gaze. She had spent so long lying to him, pretending to be in a relationship just to stop his constant pestering. But now, with the truth laid bare, she decided it was time to confess.
“We were never serious about each other, Grandpa. Damien and I had different priorities, and settling down wasn’t one of them. I’m glad he found the courage to talk to his parents, and that they understood him.”
Sylvester wasn’t convinced. But seeing Lilac speak with such certainty and thoughtfulness was something he hadn’t expected.
“Is there someone in your life, Lilac? I doubt this constant skepticism is coming from nowhere,” Sylvester said, his sharp gaze unwavering.
Lilac was amused by how quickly her grandfather voiced his doubts. But wasn’t he always like this? Upfront and blunt?
“Even if there is someone, would you ever agree to it?” She asked, leaning back on the couch with one leg draped lazily over the other.
Sylvester’s eyes narrowed in suspicion. “Who is he?” he demanded.
Lilac couldn’t help but chuckle, which only seemed to infuriate him further.
“See? That’s exactly what I’m talking about, Grandpa. You will never let us be, which is fine because we don’t want to leave you either. But for once, try to understand that controlling your grandchildren’s lives isn’t what you call parenting.”
She had grown up under Sylvester’s and her brother’s care. She didn’t even have a single memory of her parents, who had died in a car accident. All she had ever known was them, a life lived under their watchful eyes.
While her brothers weren’t as controlling, Sylvester had been the opposite. And sometimes, it irked her to the point where she wanted to tell him just how suffocating it was.
“Tell me, Grandpa, what did you gain by being so strict with us? Are any of us truly happy? Except for Kalix, who refuses to be your puppet,” Lilac said, her voice laced with frustration.
Sylvester’s expression contorted, but he had no response.
“See? You have no answer, Grandpa,” she said, offering him a sad smile.
“So let’s stop wasting time trying to control others. And as for my relationship with Damien, it was fake from the start. We both pretended because we didn’t want our families dragging us into something we never agreed to.”
Sylvester’s eyes widened at her confession, his jaw clenching in fury.
“And if you try to set me up with anyone,” Lilac added, meeting his gaze with unwavering resolve, “I will definitely move out of this house this time.”
Lilac had been thinking about this for some time now, but Sylvester had always stopped her. However, this time, she needed to be clear about her decisions.
She got up to leave when suddenly, Sylvester spoke.
“I never wanted to control you all,” he said, his voice quieter than before.
His words made her pause, turning to face him with confusion.
Lilac struggled to comprehend what he meant because, clearly, that wasn’t the case. Sylvester had been nothing but controlling their entire lives.
Sylvester let out a defeated sigh and looked up at her.
“I was protecting you all because I didn’t want to lose you like I lost your parents,” he admitted, his voice heavy with emotion. “They didn’t die in an accident, Lilac. They were killed.”

His words hit her like a thunderbolt. Lilac stood frozen, her entire body shuddering under the weight of the revelation.
Her whole life, she had believed one truth, only for it to shatter in an instant.
Sylvester had never wanted to disclose the reality of her parents’ death. Unlike Roger and Kalix, Lilac was the most sensitive. She might never show it, but she had missed her parents deeply, clinging to the memories she had crafted of them. He had wanted to preserve that innocence for as long as possible.
She staggered back, her mind going numb. Even her body seemed to give up, unable to process the truth. Without a single word, without demanding answers or confrontation, she turned on her heels and left the room.

Stanley had just returned from the base when an unexpected ring at the door caught his attention.
Glancing outside, he noticed the rain pouring down heavily. That made him wonder who it could be, especially since Sean had already gone to bed.
Curious, he walked over and pulled the door open, only to be met with a sight that sent a jolt through him.
Lilac stood there, fully drenched, rainwater dripping from her clothes.
His eyes darkened at the sheer recklessness of her walking in the rain, especially with that ankle brace. But the moment he noticed the redness in her eyes, his heart constricted.
“Lilac,” he murmured, reaching out to touch her.
But she yanked her hand away, meeting his stormy gray eyes with raw pain.
“Did you know that my parents were killed?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, yet it carried the weight of her entire world crumbling.
Her eyes begged him to pull her into his embrace, to offer the comfort she desperately sought.
But he held back.
Because she had just pushed him away.
Yet, what truly shocked him wasn’t her actions.
It was her words.
Stanley wanted to refute her words, to divert her mind from the painful truth.
But before he could utter a single word, Lilac’s body suddenly swayed.
Her eyes fluttered shut, and within seconds, she collapsed.
Cursing under his breath, Stanley lunged forward, catching her just in time before she hit the ground.
Holding her securely in his arms, he felt the dampness of her clothes seep into his own, but that was the least of his concerns.
“Lilac,” he called, patting her cheek gently, but she didn’t stir.
His jaw clenched. Whatever had happened tonight had shattered her completely.
Without wasting another second, he lifted her into his arms and carried her inside.
