Chapter 115: Chapter 115: It was a promise of destruction
“Excuse me. Do I know you?” Lily’s expression turned blank, her words hitting Rita like a slap.
Rita’s smile faltered, but she refused to back down.
“Come on, Lily. Don’t pretend we don’t know each other. We were friends all through university,” Rita said, her tone laced with forced warmth.
Inside a nearby car, Gina watched the interaction from a distance, her brows furrowing in confusion. She tried to make sense of what was happening.
“Do they know each other?” she muttered to herself.
Meanwhile, Lily fought to keep her composure, refusing to be swayed by Rita’s facade. She knew the truth all too well.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t recall knowing you. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a lot to do,” Lily said, her tone polite yet dismissive. Without waiting for a response, she turned on her heel and walked away, leaving Rita standing there in stunned silence.
Rita’s gaze followed Lily’s retreating figure until she got into her car and drove off. A cold realization settled over her.
“So this is why Roger has been acting distant,” she muttered, her eyes burning with fury. Now that she understood everything, she wasted no time before storming away, determination in every step.

Inside the moving car, Gina turned to Lily and asked, “Do you know her? That lady just now?”
“It’s Rita. And the answer to your question is no!” Lily responded bluntly.
Gina pouted, her brows knitting in mock offense. “You could have at least lied to me. But let me warn you—she’s not as kind as she looks.”
“Ask me first,” Lily chuckled.
Both women knew exactly what kind of person Rita was—especially after the stunt she pulled on Seren. There was no way they’d fall for that fake smile masking her dark personality. Gina only knew the surface level of Rita’s deceit, but Lily… she had experienced the worst of it firsthand.
Lily chuckled disheartenedly and brushed off the topic.
“So, where should I drop you? J&K or home?”
Gina’s expression turned even more pitiful. “I wish I could ask you to take me to my man, but you know how busy he is. So maybe tomorrow. For now, just take me home. I haven’t slept all night.”
Lily slowed the car and shot her a look, making Gina’s heart sink in terror.
“What rubbish! You ditched me last night with the series you picked because you were dead sleepy. And now you have the audacity to say you haven’t slept a wink?” Lily accused, clearly unconvinced.
Gina swallowed anxiously. Yes, last night she had left Lily alone, but not because she was sleepy. Her mind had been too restless, too distracted by the person she had seen earlier that day. Of course, she couldn’t tell Lily the truth.
Lily squinted at her silence. “See? I know you too well, Gina.”
Gina didn’t correct her but also didn’t let the topic linger.
“How about we girls go out for dinner? It’s been a while since we hung out together.”
Lily nodded thoughtfully. “Yes. Just check with Winter.”
“And also Lilac! I cannot wait to tell her about meeting her handsome brother,” Gina added, a dreamy look in her eyes.
Lily sighed hopelessly.

While Winter busied herself after returning, Kalix was also still caught up in back-to-back meetings, barely finding a moment to breathe. But that didn’t stop her from worrying about him.
She had already made notes of things she wanted to ask him, the questions about his sleeping disorder and whether there was a way to treat it without relying on sleeping pills. However, as she glanced toward his desk and noticed he still hadn’t returned, her thoughts continued to linger.

“I want the presentation ready by tomorrow afternoon,” Kalix instructed, his voice firm. “Also, double-check with the IT team regarding the software’s progress. And I only want proposals that are actually worth my time.”
Finally, she caught a glimpse of him making his way back to his office.
Sean made a mental note and nodded in agreement.
Kalix then sank into his executive chair with a sigh. The exhaustion was evident on his face as he closed his eyes, leaning on his seat.
“Should I schedule an appointment with Dr. Smith?” Sean asked.
Kalix slowly opened his eyes, the pounding headache shooting through his skull. He exhaled sharply but shook his head.
“I think I’ll be fine,” he said dismissively, brushing off Sean’s concern before turning his attention back to work.
“By the way, there’s something I need you to do,” Kalix added.
“Yes, Boss?”
“I want you to look into the details of everyone who attended the Global Event that night.” He paused for a second and continued, “Especially those my parents met.”
Ever since they discovered that their parents’ deaths weren’t an accident but a fabricated murder, Kalix had been relentlessly digging for answers. Yet no matter how deep he searched, all he ever received were threats warning him to stop.
But now, thinking it over again, he realized it was time to go through everything once more and this time, with even more precision.
“Anything else, Boss?” Sean asked.
Kalix shook his head, and Sean exited the office.
As soon as the door shut, Kalix quickly opened his drawer, grabbed a pill from the first aid kit, and swallowed it with a gulp of water.
“What’s wrong? Why are you taking painkillers?”
Winter’s voice suddenly cut through the room as she barged in.
She had been waiting for the right moment to talk to Kalix, holding back until Sean left. But the moment she stepped inside, she caught him in the act—gulping down painkillers with water.
Winter didn’t wait for an answer. Without hesitation, she stepped closer, her hand instinctively reaching to cup his face.
“Aren’t you feeling well?” She asked, momentarily forgetting how her actions might have caught Kalix off guard.
He blinked, momentarily stunned, his gaze shifting between the glass wall and Winter. Noticing a few curious glances from outside, he quickly grabbed the remote and lowered the blinds, shutting out prying eyes.
“Now that’s a bold move, Angel. Are you trying to claim your rights on me?” He teased, his voice laced with amusement.
Winter frowned in confusion, but realization dawned on her a second later. She instantly pulled her hand back, flustered.
“Hm, I didn’t mean to—” she stammered, glancing around. When she noticed the blinds were closed, relief washed over her.
Kalix, on the other hand, chuckled at her reaction. Without warning, he grasped her wrist and gently tugged her onto his lap.
Winter blinked, stunned. But before she could protest, his head rested against her chest, his arms wrapping around her waist in a quiet embrace. Her initial shock melted away in an instant.
“I don’t mind, though. You can have me all you want,” he murmured, his deep voice sending a shiver down her spine.
Winter remained silent for a few seconds before hesitantly lifting her hand to his head, running her fingers through his hair.
“Was that for a headache?” she asked softly.
Kalix let out a low, contented hum, sinking further into her warmth. He inhaled her scent, fresh and soothing, allowing it to chase away the tension lingering in his mind.
Winter didn’t say a word after that and simply let him hold her.
Kalix hadn’t wanted to burden Winter with his stress, yet he couldn’t help but find comfort in her presence.
“You know,” he murmured, his voice quieter now, “this is the best part of my day, finding you holding me like this, caring for me. It makes me feel… worthy.”
Winter frowned slightly, watching as he pulled back. The smile on his face told one story, but his eyes told another. There was something behind it, some deeper pain he was trying to mask.
The weight of his words lingered in her mind. Why would he feel unworthy?
“Is there something you want to talk about?” she asked gently, stroking his face with the pad of her thumb.
Kalix closed his eyes, inhaling a deep breath before exhaling slowly.
“After I find the people responsible for my parents’ deaths, I’ll leave everything behind,” he said, his voice filled with quiet resolve. “And I’ll live a peaceful life with you and our daughter, Angel.”
His fingers tightened slightly around her waist.
“I’ll fulfill my parents’ dream of living a happy life,” he added, determination laced in every word.
This was the second time Kalix had repeated those same words, and Winter couldn’t help but feel the weight of them settle in her heart. Something about them sank deep into her soul, yet she couldn’t fully grasp what they truly meant to him.
Without realizing it, she nodded and gently pulled him back into her embrace, resuming the soothing caress of her fingers through his hair.
Yet, while Kalix seemed at ease in her arms, her mind was anything but. His words lingered like an unshakable burden, one she couldn’t quite comprehend.

Somewhere in the corner of City P, a man sat in his luxurious room. Pulling out his phone, he made a call.
His gaze drifted toward the cityscape, a flicker of darkness flashing in his eyes as he spoke.
“All set?” His deep voice sent a chilling shiver through the air, yet his expression remained impassive as he issued his orders.
“Make sure he dies and that no one traces it back to us,” he commanded.
“Yes, boss. Everything will be done as you ordered,” the voice on the other end responded.
“Hm.” Without another word, he ended the call, his eyes fixed on the skyline.
“You don’t take warnings seriously, Kalix. Now, you leave me no choice but to harm you. So be it.” A cruel smirk tugged at his lips. “But this time, it’ll be far worse than before, because you won’t be the only one to suffer. The girl you love will, too.”
It wasn’t just a threat; it was a promise of destruction, one that would shatter both of their lives. And he was looking forward to witnessing the aftermath.
