Chapter 117: Chapter 117: Miss Winter, you are under arrest
Inside the VIP room, Winter remained by Kalix’s side. Though he was out of immediate danger, the exhaustion etched on his face made her heart ache.
He had not only dislocated his shoulder but also suffered a deep cut on his back.
“Wake up, Kalix. Talk to me—at least say something,” she whispered, her lips trembling. The memory of the construction site flashed through her mind, and she instinctively reached for his hand, gripping it tightly, unwilling to let go.
A shudder ran through her as she thought of what could have happened—how close they had come to disaster if the emergency team hadn’t acted in time.
“Don’t scare me like that again,” she murmured, pressing her lips against his knuckles, silent tears slipping down her cheeks.
The night deepened, and exhaustion eventually pulled her into sleep. However, the sound of heavy breathing startled her awake.
Her eyes shot to Kalix as he struggled on the bed, sweat dampening his skin. His grip on her hand tightened as he muttered something incoherent.
He was having a nightmare—a replay of the accident from only hours ago.
“Kalix, it’s okay… relax. Everything is fine,” Winter soothed, wasting no time in comforting him. She pressed gentle kisses against his temple and whispered reassuring words, her fingers running through his hair. Slowly, his breathing steadied, and his body relaxed.
His eyes fluttered open, a wave of relief washing over him.
“Angel,” he whispered, forcing a weak smile, as if the sight of her was the only thing keeping him grounded.
“It’s okay. Everything is fine,” she continued murmuring, watching as he brought her hand close to his chest before drifting back into sleep.
The accident had shaken everyone. She knew Sean was already investigating what had caused the collapse, but right now, her only concern was Kalix—seeing him wake up, seeing him return to himself.
Winter stayed by his side, her fingers tracing light patterns on his hand, until exhaustion finally claimed her again. She fell asleep in the chair beside his bed.
By the time she woke, the sun had already risen, faint golden rays slipping through the curtains.
“Good morning.”
Winter blinked, her vision adjusting as she turned toward the source of the voice. Her breath caught in her throat.
Kalix was awake, inclined slightly on the bed, his fingers still loosely holding onto hers.
The sound of his voice, steady and soothing, washed away the haze of sleep. Her eyes welled with tears, the weight of the past hours crashing over her again.
Before she could stop herself, she wrapped her arms around him.
Kalix winced slightly but didn’t push her away. Instead, he held her even closer.
“You’re terrible, Kalix. Do you realize how much you scared me?” She murmured against his chest, her voice thick with emotion.
Tears streamed freely down her face as she clung to him, unwilling to let go.
Kalix remained silent, his hand continuing to stroke her back in soothing motions. The concern in Winter’s voice was unmistakable, a reflection of the fears clawing at her as she saw him in such a vulnerable state.
“Ahem-hm.”
The sound of someone clearing their throat jolted Winter back to reality. It was only then that she realized just how tightly she had been holding onto Kalix.
“I—I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to—” she stammered, flustered, ignoring the presence of others in the room. But before she could fully pull away, Kalix tightened his hold and effortlessly guided her to sit beside him once more.
“It’s time to check on the patient,” a voice announced.
Winter’s eyes widened in shock as the doctor and nurse approached the bed. Panic set in as she realized the compromising position she was in—pressed against Kalix, who showed no intention of letting her go.
“Mr. Kalix, I hope you’re feeling better,” the doctor greeted politely.

Winter, still trapped in Kalix’s hold, exchanged an awkward glance with the nurse. The young woman merely offered her a shy smile, which only made Winter’s embarrassment deepen.
Never in her life had Winter experienced secondhand embarrassment—until Kalix came into it and turned everything upside down.
As the doctor continued his examination, asking routine questions, Kalix responded casually—all while keeping a firm hold on Winter’s hand.
“I’d advise you to avoid lifting heavy objects and try to sleep on your side,” the doctor instructed before concluding his checkup and stepping away.
As soon as the door closed behind him, Winter quickly tried to get away; however, Kalix stopped her and leaned his head against her shoulder.
“You shouldn’t leave a patient alone, Angel,” he murmured, his voice laced with warmth.
Winter shot him a look of disbelief.
“Even when the patient is being completely shameless? Kalix, how could you let them see us like that? Did you notice how embarrassed they were?” she voiced, the embarrassment still haunting her in the back of her mind.
Kalix pulled back slightly and gave her a nonchalant look.
“I don’t care,” he said, his tone utterly indifferent. “As long as I need you with me, Angel.”
His words left no room for argument, and before she could protest further, he rested his head on her shoulder again.
“You’ll hurt your neck,” she pointed out.
“No. Just stay like this with me for a while,” he muttered.
Winter sighed but said nothing more.
As Kalix remained pressed against her, his mind began piecing together the events that had led up to this moment. However, before he could fully process everything, the door swung open again—this time, it was Sylvester who stepped inside.
“I see you’re completely fine. Was I worrying for nothing?” He asked, his gaze flickering between Kalix and Winter.
Kalix lazily lifted his head, his sharp eyes meeting his grandfather’s.
“Isn’t that obvious? I already have my woman next to me,” he replied nonchalantly.
Sylvester’s expression darkened at his words.
Sensing the tension thickening between them, Winter quickly stood up.
“I’ll wait outside,” she murmured, ignoring the warning look in Kalix’s dark eyes before hurrying out of the room.
Closing the door behind her, Winter let out a sigh of relief. However, her moment of reprieve was short-lived when she spotted Sean approaching Kalix’s ward.
The second she saw him, he released an exhausted breath.
“Did you find anything? How did the building collapse?” she asked immediately.
Lilac had already informed her that Sean was handling the situation and had urged her not to worry, telling her to stay with Kalix. But now that he was here, the cautious look on his face made her stomach twist with unease.
“We sent a sample of the materials used in the building’s construction for analysis,” Sean began grimly. “The results confirmed that substandard materials were used.”
Winter’s eyes widened in shock.
“How is that possible? We checked the materials and their quality beforehand—how could they turn out to be cheap?” She demanded, refusing to accept the outcome so easily.
“I know,” Sean admitted. “But they cross-checked everything, and the results remained the same.”
There was no way the forensic report could be falsified, especially now that the incident had become a highly scrutinized topic. Sean had personally ensured that every possibility behind the collapse was thoroughly investigated.
“What about Mr. Kingstone? What’s his explanation for this?” Winter asked, watching as Sean’s expression grew even more troubled.
“That man is nowhere to be found.”
Winter’s breath hitched.
How is that possible? She had just met him this morning, and now he had vanished without a trace?
She was still trying to process the shocking revelation when the sound of heavy footsteps echoed through the corridor. The sudden noise startled both her and Sean, making them tense.
A high-ranking police officer stopped right in front of her, his gaze stern and unwavering.
“Miss Winter, you are under arrest,” the officer announced.
Both Winter and Sean stared in shock at his words. Without hesitation, Sean stepped in between them.
“Officer, you can’t take her anywhere,” he said firmly.
“We have a warrant for her arrest, Mr. Sean.”
Sean frowned, confusion flickering across his face. Before he could argue further, another voice cut through the tense silence.
“Step back, Sean. Let the officer do his job.”
Dianna emerged from the crowd, her presence commanding as she stepped forward and stood directly in front of Winter.
Her piercing gaze bore into Winter’s soul, but her expression remained unreadable.
“Dianna, do you even realize what you’re saying?” Winter asked, her voice steady as she locked eyes with the woman.
“I know exactly what I’m doing, Winter. You can’t refuse when there’s evidence against you,” Dianna stated firmly, leaving Winter bewildered.
As the commotion unfolded outside, Kalix and Sylvester picked up on the noise and quickly stepped out of the room.
“Let us do our job, Mr. Sean,” the officer warned before moving to handcuff Winter.
But before he could lay a hand on her, Kalix’s deep, commanding voice sliced through the tension.
“Touch her, and you’ll lose your job officer.”
Every eye in the corridor turned toward Kalix as he stepped forward, positioning himself beside Winter. His grip on her hand was firm—protective, unwavering.
“Without my permission, no one can take her,” he declared, his voice laced with authority, leaving the officer stunned.
