Chapter 135: Chapter 135: It’s him
Winter knew she could rely on Mrs. Brooke and Kalix’s guards, so when he assured her of their safety, she didn’t press the topic further.
“But what about the problem that’s bothering you?” She asked, seizing his attention and pulling it back to her.
Kalix feigned innocence, trying to steer her away from the conversation he wasn’t ready to have.
“Problem? What problem do I have?” he replied, avoiding her gaze.
But before he could fully withdraw, she reached out and gently cupped his face, forcing him to look at her.
“You’re smart, Kalix,” she said softly, “but you can’t fool me. I know it’s not Diana—it’s something else. Something deeper. And it’s eating at you.”
Her voice had softened, her tone now more concerned than confrontational.
Kalix had always been the one to protect her, to shoulder her burdens without hesitation. Now, Winter wanted to return the favor. But the cold distance in his demeanor, the way he recoiled from her concern, made her heart ache.
Kalix noticed the desperation in her eyes, the silent plea for honesty, and for a moment, his resolve to keep things to himself began to waver.
“You remember I told you about finding the people who killed my parents?” He said, his voice low, testing the waters.
Winter’s tense expression eased slightly at the mention, her body visibly relaxing in his presence.
“I asked Sean to reopen the investigation—to look into everything from the beginning.” He hesitated, uncertainty creeping into his voice. “And… he found something.”
The way he said it—cautious, almost fearful—only piqued Winter’s curiosity more.
“What did he find?” she asked firmly, unwilling to let him drift back into silence.
Kalix met her eyes then, and though fear flickered in his gaze, he also found strength reflected in hers. That strength gave him the courage to say what he had been dreading.
“My father’s involvement… with your grandfather.”
Those words from Kalix left Winter speechless.
“W-What does that mean?” She asked, her voice barely above a whisper, still trying to process the weight of what he’d just revealed.
Kalix studied her face, reading the confusion, the fear, and the flicker of betrayal all tangled in her expression. He waited—giving her the space to catch her breath, to steady her thoughts.
And when she finally looked at him again, silently signaling that she was ready, he spoke—slowly, carefully.
He told her everything Sean had uncovered, leaving her more confused than ever by the entire discovery.
“Why wouldn’t Grandpa tell us this? And… does this mean he intentionally approached you because—”
“No, Angel. That’s not what you think,” Kalix quickly interrupted before she could finish her thought.
He’d been circling the same doubts in his own mind, but hearing Winter try to voice them out loud—he couldn’t bear it. Her words felt like tiny daggers piercing straight through him.
Winter looked at him with quiet sadness, but the ache in her chest didn’t ease. Before she could spiral deeper into darker thoughts, Kalix pulled her into his arms.
“We met because we were meant to be together—whether it was through strategy or fate,” he said firmly, his voice leaving no room for doubt.
Because no matter what they believed, or what Bryson’s reasons might have been for bringing them together, Kalix knew one truth with certainty:
He was always meant to find her. One way or another, his destiny was her.
The couple remained in each other’s embrace, but the silence between them stretched, heavy with unspoken thoughts. Eventually, Winter pulled away, her brows still furrowed with unease.
“I need to talk to Grandpa,” she muttered, unable to shake off the lingering doubts that continued to haunt her.

“I need to speak with my grandfather too,” Kalix said, his tone shifting as his eyes darkened at the mention of Sylvester.
Winter tilted her head, curiosity piqued. “How is your grandfather involved in all this?”
Kalix looked at her, his gaze deep and weighted with frustration.
“He knew everything—every piece of it—and yet he never once told me,” he revealed, his voice edged with betrayal.
Winter stared at him, startled by the revelation. Another layer of secrets had just been peeled back, and it left them both with more questions than answers.

Meanwhile, in Gina’s apartment, she stood on the balcony, her phone pressed to her ear as she spoke with Niko, who had just contacted her with updates on the queries she had asked him to look into.
“Thanks, Niko. I owe you one,” Gina said before ending the call and stepping back into her room.
She immediately moved to her laptop, locating the email Niko had just sent. Her fingers hesitated only briefly before she downloaded the attached file and opened the footage.
As the video played, her eyes widened, and a cold chill swept over her.
“So… it was him,” she whispered, stunned, disbelief flooding her chest and twisting into dread.
The revelation rattled her, making her question everything—including her decision to stay in this city.
Her mind was still spinning from the results Niko had confirmed when her phone suddenly rang, snapping her out of her thoughts. She glanced at the screen—and froze for a second. It was Sean.
Quickly, she masked the worry on her face and plastered on a smile before answering.
“Hey, handsome. Calling me at this hour? Already missing me, huh?” She teased, trying to keep the mood light despite the storm inside her.
But the second Sean spoke, her smile faltered.
“Come downstairs. I’m waiting for you in my car,” he said simply—and then hung up.
Gina stared at the blank screen, momentarily stunned. Then she jolted into motion, climbing off her bed and hurrying out of the apartment. Her steps were quick and silent as she made her way to the parking area of her building.
And there he was.
Seeing Sean waiting for her took her by surprise—but not nearly as much as the unreadable look on his face.
The smile on her face faltered, but she said nothing. Sean stepped out and opened the door for her, a gesture that only deepened her confusion. She slid into the passenger seat, and once he got in behind the wheel, they drove off in silence.
