Chapter 147: Chapter 147: And the result is the same
Winter watched as Kalix suddenly fell silent, as if he too were wrestling with the same thought.

“Did you ever find him suspicious? I mean, you must’ve gone through every detail about him before you started stalking me,” she asked, her voice calm but edged with curiosity.

Her words caught him off guard. His eyes sharpened as they locked onto hers, unreadable but undeniably alert.

When he didn’t offer a reply, his silence spoke louder than any denial.

“You did, didn’t you? And the result was the same,” she pressed, her voice softer but certain. “Am I right, Kalix?”

Kalix wasn’t the kind of man to admit defeat—pride wouldn’t allow it. But with Winter, he found himself bending that rule more times than he cared to count.

Clearing his throat, he glanced away, as though searching the room for an escape. “My team is still working on it,” he finally muttered.

Winter let out a quiet chuckle at his half-hearted excuse.

“Which means you doubt him too,” she concluded with a light shrug, satisfied enough not to trouble her thoughts any further. “Looks like we’re on the same page.”

Kalix didn’t argue; instead, she shared a knowing look with her.

“So, this is the real deal now — finding out who Eric truly is and what his motive is for clinging to the Greysons,” she declared, completely unaware that Kalix was already several steps ahead.

He had already laid the groundwork — not just to expose Eric, but to trap David as well. Once the pieces fell into place, the truth would follow.

“So, now that we know what we have to do,” he added, her voice dipping into something softer, “can we continue what we started?”

Kalix didn’t wait for an answer. Instead, he seized the moment, taking advantage of her brief daze to lean in, his lips brushing hers before she could react — the corner of his mouth lifted in that infuriatingly smug smirk of his.

But Winter snapped out of it just in time, pulling back and pushing herself up from the couch.

“No. I’m sleepy,” she said, feigning indifference as she hurried to the other side of the bed and lay down.

She knew her heart wasn’t in it — not tonight. Not with so much chaos hanging over them. But even as she turned her back on him, Kalix’s piercing stare followed, lingering, heavy enough to make her pull the covers tighter around herself.

“Not even a peck?” he asked, clinging to a sliver of hope.

“No,” she shot back without a second’s hesitation, reaching out to switch off the lights.

Kalix let out a quiet sigh. Sleep felt like a distant luxury, but still, he lay down beside her, hoping that simply being near her would bring some measure of peace.

Just as his thoughts began to drift, he felt her shift. Winter turned, carefully reaching for him and pulling him close against her chest. Her touch was gentle, mindful of his wounded shoulder and the stitches he still carried.

She might have refused his teasing earlier, but Winter knew how restless his nights were — and if her quiet comfort could offer him even the smallest bit of sleep, she wasn’t going to deny him that.

Kalix smiled as she held him close, soaking in the rare tenderness. But his mischievous mind couldn’t help itself.

His free hand slid beneath her top, inching lower, aiming for her chest — only for Winter to slap his hand away without missing a beat.

“If you want me to stay, then behave,” she warned, her voice sharp but soft.

This time, Kalix took the hint. He let his hand fall back, settling beside her, choosing not to push his luck.

Minutes passed in silence, and soon he could hear the steady rhythm of her breathing. That’s when he realized she’d fallen asleep. But sleep still refused to come to him.

Carefully, he slipped out of her hold, making sure not to wake her, and reached for his phone. Stepping away from the bed, he dialed Sean’s number.

Meanwhile, inside his room, Sean lay awake, his thoughts drifting endlessly between Gina and Niko, whom he’d seen that morning.

Since then, he had been wrestling with the urge to call her, but each time, he held himself back, convincing himself he was simply overthinking.

Just as he sighed and rolled onto his back, his phone rang. His heart lifted, hope sparking in his chest at the thought that it might be Gina. But that hope vanished in an instant when he saw the caller ID — it was Kalix.

Reluctantly, he answered, his voice flat and unenthusiastic enough to make Kalix pause for a moment.

“What’s with that tone? Were you sleeping and I disturbed you?” Kalix asked, his voice edged with curiosity.

“No… I just can’t sleep,” Sean replied, his voice so weighed down with sadness that it made Kalix pause, concern flickering in his mind.

“And what’s keeping you awake?” Kalix asked after a moment.

“Of course, not you,” Sean mumbled under his breath.

“What was that? Say that again,” Kalix prompted, catching the faint words but not quite sure he heard right.

Realizing what he’d just let slip in his moment of distress, Sean quickly scrambled to cover it up.

“Of course it’s you, Boss. I mean, I’ve got to be a call away for you at all times. Even now, I was hoping that with you settling down, finally becoming a family man, I might get a little rest. But… it looks like that’s not happening anytime soon.”

Kalix went silent on the other end, his thoughts lingering on Sean’s words.

“Anyway, why did you call me?” Sean asked, brushing off his earlier slip and forcing a smile, even though Kalix wasn’t there to see it.

Kalix let out a sigh, choosing to ignore Sean’s strained tone. “It’s about Eric. I want to know why he’s still hanging around the Greysons.”

The faint smile that lingered on Sean’s face instantly faded, his mind turning over Kalix’s words.

“Wasn’t it to secure his career?” Sean asked cautiously.

“That’s what it looks like,” Kalix replied, his voice calm but laced with doubt. “But I have a feeling there’s more to it than that.”

Sean’s brow furrowed, sensing the weight behind Kalix’s words.

“I want you to look into it,” Kalix continued, his tone sharpening. “And get Niko on it too. Dig deeper — there’s got to be a way to uncover what he’s really after.”

Kalix had grown more persistent ever since Winter voiced her own suspicions about Eric. It wasn’t just about him trying to worm his way into her family anymore — something else was at play, and Kalix was determined to uncover it.

Sean’s mood soured at the mention of Niko, but he kept his displeasure to himself and simply agreed before ending the call.

Sean was never the type to hold personal grudges against anyone, but this assignment gave him the perfect excuse to uncover what was really going on between Eric and Gina — something that had been gnawing at him since morning.

Without wasting time, he typed out a quick message to Niko, sending it off before tossing his phone aside. Letting out a heavy sigh, he slumped back onto the bed, hoping sleep would finally come — but knowing full well his restless thoughts wouldn’t make it easy.
