Chapter 191: Chapter 191:The sooner we make our move, the better.
“But he later confirmed that he pulled out abruptly,” Winter added, informing Kalix everything Byron revealed to her.
Kalix leaned back slightly, his fingers sliding from her cheek but still lingering against her shoulder, a reassuring weight. “Alexander is a man who is playing a long game. First hiding in shadows, and now openly”
Winter bit her lip, her mind racing. “But what could it be? And why involve Eric? He’s not exactly a reliable partner.”
“That’s what worries me,” Kalix murmured, his gaze darkening. “If Eric is a pawn, then someone is moving the pieces, and Alexander might be just one of them.”
A chill crept down Winter’s spine. “Which means we might be looking at a much bigger threat than we thought.”
Kalix’s hand slipped to the back of her neck, pulling her close again, his forehead resting against hers. His voice was low, a fierce whisper that seemed to echo in the quiet room.
“Then we’ll uncover every layer of this. But you will not put yourself at risk again. Not without me.”
Winter’s lips curved, a mix of relief and warmth spreading through her chest. “So, we do this together?”
“Always,” he whispered, his lips brushing against hers in a promise that sent a shiver through her.
But even as his kiss deepened, Winter couldn’t shake the lingering unease—the feeling that they were walking into a web far more tangled than they realized.
As Kalix’s lips moved hungrily over hers, each kiss turned more demanding than the last.
Winter’s thoughts began to blur, her resolve dissolving beneath the searing heat of his touch. His fingers traced a possessive path along her waist, pulling her closer until she felt the hard, solid warmth of his body pressing against hers.
A soft, desperate moan slipped from her lips, and Kalix took it as an invitation, his mouth parting hers, his tongue exploring, teasing, tasting—each touch igniting a fire that spread through her veins.
Winter’s fingers tangled in his hair, her back arching instinctively as he guided her down onto the plush bed.
His weight settled over her, one of his hands sliding beneath the hem of her blouse, his touch setting her skin ablaze. His mouth left her lips, tracing a heated trail down her jawline, his breath hot against her neck.
“Kalix…” she whispered, her voice a mix of longing and desperation, her body responding to every caress, every touch.
But just as her senses began to drown in his embrace, a sharp thought pierced through the haze—Sean.
Her eyes snapped open, and she forced herself to focus. “Kalix… wait.”
He paused, his lips lingering against her collarbone, his breath heavy, and his gaze a storm of unfulfilled desire. “Winter…”
“Sean… he must have the results by now,” she breathed, struggling to steady her racing heart.
A low, frustrated groan rumbled from Kalix’s chest, his head dropping to rest against her shoulder. He didn’t pull away immediately, instead letting his fingers gently trace the curve of her waist, as if grounding himself.
“You really know how to ruin a perfectly good moment, wife,” he muttered, his voice a rough mix of amusement and longing.
Winter bit her lip, her cheeks flushing. “I’m sorry… but this is important.”
Kalix sighed, his lips pressing a final, lingering kiss against her cheek before he pulled back, his gaze still smoldering. “You’re lucky I love you.”
Warmth blossomed in her chest at his words, but before she could respond, he stood, reaching out a hand to help her up.
Fixing her slightly rumpled blouse and brushing down her hair, Winter took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. But the burn of his touch lingered, her skin still tingling with the ghost of his kisses.
Kalix, ever the composed Alpha, adjusted his collar and straightened his suit, though the hungry look in his eyes hadn’t completely faded.
Together, they stepped out of the private suite and walked back into his office.
Winter’s pulse still raced, but now, her focus was split between the lingering warmth of Kalix’s touch and the tension knotting in her stomach.
Sean better have something useful, she thought, because whatever Eric was planning, she needed to be ready.

“The bottle contains Veridex—a slow-acting poison designed to terminate pregnancies without leaving a trace,” Sean revealed, his voice low and grave.
Winter’s gaze snapped to Kalix, her breath catching for a moment. The weight of the revelation crashed over her like a tidal wave.
“So it’s true,” she whispered, a chill settling over her. “Eric planned to use it on Agnes… to get rid of their child.”
The pieces were falling into place, each one twisting the knot of dread tighter in her chest. Eric’s deceit, his manipulation—it all made sense now.
“But Veridex is illegal,” Sean added, his brows furrowing with disbelief. “You can’t just walk into any store and buy it. Even in the underground market, it’s difficult to obtain.”
Winter’s lips tightened, anger simmering beneath her calm facade. “Which is exactly why he had one of his spies deliver it to him. I saw the exchange myself. And if I hadn’t staged that confrontation to steal the bottle, he would have already used it.”
Her voice wavered slightly at the end, but she steadied herself.
Kalix’s jaw clenched, his fingers curling into fists. “If he’s desperate enough to kill his own child, he won’t stop because of a missing vial.”
“Precisely,” Winter agreed. “The other vial he had broken during the commotion I caused, but that won’t stop him. He’ll simply send for another—maybe even tonight.”
“And how do you plan to stop him?” Sean interjected. “If he gets his hands on another dose, Agnes is as good as dead.”
Silence fell over them for a brief, suffocating moment before Winter’s determination flared.
“We won’t let that happen,” she declared, her voice resolute.
She then turned to Sean. “Sean, can you replicate this poison?” Winter asked, a dangerous plan already forming in her mind.
Sean hesitated. “Replicate? As in… make it look the same without actually being deadly?”
“Exactly,” Winter confirmed. “If we switch the vial before Eric gets another one, we can force him to expose himself. He’ll think he’s still in control while we’re watching his every move.”
Kalix’s brow furrowed as he studied Winter, his sharp gaze trying to decipher the whirlwind of thoughts behind her calm exterior.
Yet, instead of pressing her for details, he leaned back in his chair, the leather creaking softly beneath him. His fingers tapped rhythmically on the armrest, a subtle indication of his curiosity.
Sean exchanged a quick glance with Kalix before giving Winter a nod, a hint of admiration in his eyes.
“As you say, Lady Boss,” he quipped, his tone light but respectful. With that, he stood and strode out of the room, leaving the air thick with tension and anticipation.
The door clicked shut, and silence settled between Winter and Kalix. But it didn’t last long. A slow, mischievous smile spread across Kalix’s lips, his intense gaze locking onto hers.
“So,” he drawled, leaning casually against the desk, “should we head home now? I’m still craving my dessert.”
Winter’s cheeks warmed instantly, her pulse quickening as she caught the teasing glint in his eyes. “Kalix…” she sighed, fighting the smile threatening to escape. But the way he watched her, like a predator savoring the moment before a pounce, sent a shiver of excitement down her spine.
“You look surprised,” he murmured, pushing away from the desk to close the distance between them. His fingers brushed against her cheek, tucking a loose strand of her hair behind her ear. “But you shouldn’t be. You’ve been tempting me all day.”
A quiet laugh escaped her, her tension easing slightly. “And here I thought you were only interested in my plans,” she teased.
“Oh, I am,” Kalix whispered, his voice a deep rumble, “but I’m even more interested in you.”
Her breath hitched as his lips grazed her forehead, a gentle yet possessive gesture that left her dizzy. But she couldn’t let herself get completely swept away—not yet.
With a subtle but regretful step back, Winter pulled out her phone, her fingers quickly typing a text.
She hit send, a slight knot tightening in her chest. She had no idea if Agnes would respond, but she had to try.
Kalix arched an eyebrow. “Still thinking about the plan, aren’t you?”
Winter nodded, slipping her phone back into her bag. “Yes. The sooner we make our move, the better.”
“Smart,” Kalix murmured, taking her hand in his and pressing a soft kiss to her knuckles. “But I still plan on having you all to myself tonight.”
Winter couldn’t help the warm smile that blossomed on her lips. “Let’s go home then. Who am I to deny you your dessert?”
Kalix’s deep chuckle filled the room, and with a gentle yet firm grip on her hand, he led her out of the office, his presence a constant reminder that no matter the chaos around them, she wasn’t alone.
