Chapter 38: Chapter 38: I think someone is watching over us
Inside the coffee shop, Winter ordered two cappuccinos for both Hayes and herself. Though she hadn’t anticipated his unexpected arrival, his presence did help to soothe her racing mind.
“Did you speak with Mr. Kalix?” he inquired.
“Not yet,” she responded with an exaggerated sigh.
Winter quickly felt remorse for having proposed such a condition, as it prevented her from speaking to Kalix during the time of crisis.
Hayes observed her disappointment. He also felt a sense of worthlessness after losing his job so suddenly.
“I never expected to receive my resignation letter so unexpectedly. But now everything seems too difficult for us. I don’t think we can stop your father now,” Hayes said, sounding defeated.
Having stood by Byron’s side for years, he understood how the man built the company with immense dedication and hard work and found it difficult to witness all his efforts go to waste.
Hayes recognized that David possessed the potential to be a successful businessman, yet his impulsiveness and greed occasionally eclipsed that excellence, leading to the two losses they had recently experienced.
Winter reflected on his words. Despite the seemingly dire situation, she remained resolute in refusing to give up. She will not allow her father to succeed with his malicious plan.
“Did anyone recognize you?” “Did anyone recognize you?” Hayes asked, drawing her out of her thoughts.
Winter gave him a hesitant look and shrugged.”Maybe some might, but I guess they won’t dare ask,” she said, and Hayes could finally be at ease.
Hayes was already informed about her decision to work with Kalix and no matter how much she was against it, she couldn’t come to do anything.
The duo continued to talk when suddenly Hayes caught sight of a man eyeing at them.
“I don’t want to freak you out. But I think someone is watching over us. Did Kalix ask someone to keep a tab on you?” He inquired, surprising Winter. She was on the verge of glancing back when Hayes cautioned her.
“Kalix won’t do that,” she muttered.
“So, I suppose this is meant for me? Someone was watching me,” he said, glancing at Winter.
“I believe we should conclude the discussion here,” he remarked, to which Winter concurred.
Hayes then turned his gaze back to the man, captivating him with his curiosity. He made sure to warn him and then watched the man leave.
“You must go. I will follow the man,” Hayes stated, and without wasting a second, he pursued him.
Winter felt a rush of confusion, but before she could express her feelings, Hayes had already exited the shop.
A deep frown creased her face as she realized someone was watching them, and her suspicions narrowed to just one individual.
Her father
Her eyes deepened as she continued to gaze in the direction from which Hayes had exited.
Meanwhile, Hayes continued to follow the man who clearly seemed to have noticed him. He continually glanced back, observing him, and the harder Hayes attempted to maintain his speed, the more it appeared that the man was outpacing him.
Hayes quickened his pace, prepared to catch the man. However, a school van abruptly stopped him, and by the time it passed, the man had disappeared.
“Damn it!” Hayes cursed at his failure. His eyes searched for a sign, yet he could not find the man.
Helpless, he walked away from there. However, the same pair of eyes peeked in from the alley where the man was hiding, and once confirming that Hayes had returned, he too walked away.

When Winter returned home, she found Butler James already waiting for her. The moment she stepped inside the house, he reached for her and handed her some documents.

Winter felt a sense of confusion, but her gaze was drawn to the bold letters written on the file, prompting her to swiftly slide it in and read its contents.
“He already got Seren enrolled in the school,” Winter blinked.
Yesterday, she was contemplating the search for a good school for Seren, and today, she received the news of her daughter’s enrollment.
“Where is Star?” Winter asked Butler James.
“Young Miss is playing with her toys in her room,” he explained, and Winter quickly excused herself.
“Mommy, look what I made!” Seren exclaimed, leaping with excitement as soon as she spotted her mother and hurriedly dashed towards her.
Seren took her hand and led her toward the couch, swiftly grabbing her drawing book to showcase the art.
“See, I drew you and Daddy.” Winter’s mouth quirked when she saw the extraordinary artwork. A sheletone-shaped figure for her, while for her father, a blown balloon. They both appeared disheveled, with their hair resembling a bird’s nest.
“That is truly amazing.” Winter enveloped her thoughts and compelled a smile, praising her daughter.
Seren may be a brilliant kid, but she struggles with drawing, a talent she seems to have inherited from her mother.
Winter swiftly brushed off the insulting thought and lifted her daughter into her arms.
“You know I have a surprise for you,” she continued, her doe-like eyes filled with optimism.
“Seren will be going to a new school,” Winter announced, eliciting a joyful squeal from her daughter.
Seren was happy, but then the smile on her face suddenly faded.
“But I won’t have Nathan or Rosy with me. They were my best friends. Sadness overtook her expression as she hunched in her mother’s lap.
Winter understood that Seren had very few friends, with Nathan and Rosy being the only ones. However, as they were unable to return, she found herself seeing her friends less frequently.
“What if Nathan and Rosy aren’t at the new school? We can visit them whenever you want.” Winter’s words instantly lift her spirit.
“Really, Mommy?” She squealed, her excitement palpable, and Winter nodded in response.
“Absolutely.”
The mother and daughter were enjoying their quality time when Butler James entered the room.
Winter’s smile faltered at the sight of his concerned face, and she quickly inquired. “What happened?”
“Madame, we have a visitor at home,” he said, causing the frown on Winter’s forehead to deepen. The moment their eyes met, she could finally sense his nervousness at the prospect of the person waiting downstairs.
