Chapter 40: Chapter 40: We found him
Winter blinked, her heart racing at the smile that appeared on Kalix’s lips. She realized he had returned to his playful teasing, yet she found herself unable to shake off the impact of his recent words.
‘Was she jealous?’ she asked herself. No way she was affected by the idea of Kalix being someone’s partner.
“No, I am not,” she denied, even as the overwhelming sensation seeped through her heart.
Kalix’s gaze roamed across her face, a playful grin tugging on his lips. He took another step and towered over her.
“Then why is your heart beating fast, Angel? Are you lying to me?” He furrowed his brows slightly as he placed his hand gently under her chin.
Winter gasped as he made her look up into his eyes. She felt a knot in her stomach as they admired her with extreme care. “You aren’t very good at lying, Angel,” he whispered, leaning in closer to her.
Winter shut her eyes as the tip of his nose gently touched her face. His hot breath sent shivers down her spine, and she couldn’t help but feel weak in her knees.
She should have held back, but her body failed her.
‘No, Winter, you cannot fall for his tricks,’ her subconscious screamed, startling her out of the trance, and she instantly pushed him away.
“Your family has already chosen a girl for you, so why did you bring me here?” She inquired, unable to hide her frustration.
Winter felt as though she stood in the way of the two individuals destined to be together. However, this was not something she desired. It was the man who compelled her to act.
Her outburst surprised Kalix, but he kept his cool.
“I don’t agree to any of their settings because I only have my eyes on you,” he said with a warning that made Winter shiver.
His eyes carried the depth of the night, causing her to swallow hard. He exuded a sense of calm, yet there was an underlying danger about him.
“I don’t want to be labeled as your mistress,” she declared, quickly averting her gaze.
“Additionally, your grandpa doesn’t seem to like me. He proposed that I take money in exchange for leaving my daughter and you.”
Kalix clenched his jaw and compelled her to meet his gaze. “I am sorry,” he said, surprising Winter with his genuine sincerity.
She found it difficult to fully hold him responsible. In these few days, she had already noticed his admiration for her, yet she also couldn’t dismiss the idea that his grandpa would never accept her.
‘But why would she want him to do that at all? It’s not as if I’m in love with his grandson.’
Kalix could see Winter was contemplating something, and before she could allow her thoughts to overtake her sensible mind, he kissed her.
“Never think of abandoning me. You agreed to give me a chance,” he said, pulling her back to reality, reminding her about the deal they settled on.
Winter’s hazy eyes lingered across his face. He was an incredibly handsome man, and those eyes; she simply couldn’t help but stare at them. Yet, each time she gazed at him, a certain feeling washed over her.
‘What makes him seem so familiar apart from being the man I have a daughter with?’
The idea of being familiar with him filled her with a sense of excitement, yet she struggled to remember when and where it had happened.
Kalix kept his gaze fixed on her, the quietness that lingered between them unsettling him.
He had not intended to be at home, but upon hearing about Sylvester’s visit from Julian, he felt compelled to get there before the old man could make any disrespectful comments to his woman.
“What did you want to say back in the office?” He quickly changed the topic as the tension between them began to unsettle him even more. He needed to move past this feeling they were both experiencing at the moment.
Winter looked at Kalix for a moment, her mind wandering back to the topic she wanted to bring before him.
“Oh yes,” she remembered and swiftly gathered her composure.

“Any updates on Richard?” she inquired, peering expectantly at him.
Winter had already failed to stop her father and Richard was the only one who would help her.
Kalix, on the other hand, hesitated for a moment, aware of the urgency in her voice. Although his initial plan was to confront the man first and then report her, the need in her eyes led him to believe that he should simply tell her.
“We found him,” he announced, surprising Winter.
“So, what are we waiting for? Take me to him,” she disregarded his lack of enthusiasm and asked him to take her to meet Richard.
Winter was about to turn, but Kalix’s stiffness drew her attention and caused her to furrow her brow.
“What’s stopping you from walking? I need to see the man,” she demanded, maintaining her intense stare on him.
Kalix aimed to protect Winter from the harsh realities of his dark life, something he would never wish for his family to witness. However, his heart, bound to this woman, could not refuse her, and the next action he took was to go after her.
Inside the car, Winter scrolled through her phone and opened the message Hayes texted her.
“I lost the man,” it stated, and something about those words piqued her interest. She had no idea who that man was or who was the one to hire him. However, the realization that they were under surveillance alerted her.
By the time they reached their destination, Winter had already realized what was causing his hesitation.
“He brought me to his base,” she gulped, staring at the enormous gate that swung open for their car to pass. Every second weighed heavily on her, leaving her to regret not contemplating it earlier.
Winter despised blood, and the last thing she wished to do was set foot in an underworld property.
Kalix abruptly said, “Come, let’s go,” and she gave him her most wary visage. Though she felt nervous, there was no way she would allow the surroundings to deter her.
Meeting Richard was her first priority, and she would not change her mind.
With a nod, Winter exited the car, and as soon as her gaze landed ahead, the guards standing outside bowed to them.
She cast a look at Kalix, who simply reached out to take her hand, their fingers intertwining as they entered a well-secured building.
The base, like his penthouse, boasted advanced digital security features. Armed men guarded every corner with utmost security.
Winter anticipated that Kalix would capture Richard in one of the cells; however, to her surprise, he led her toward the underground dungeon.
It wasn’t exactly the dungeon she had imagined or seen in the horror movies, but it also didn’t provide her with pleasant vibes.
“Ah…”
Winter leaped, gripping Kalix’s arm tightly, her head swiveling as she searched for the source of the scream that had just pierced the air.
As soon as her gaze met Kalix’s, his brow raised in expectation, and she swiftly gathered her composure.
“Is that Richard?” She attempted to sound composed, yet a hint of fear remained in her voice.
“I believe so,” Winter gasped as she heard a second scream that sent chills down her spine.
“Ah…”
