Chapter 44: Chapter 44: She breached the clause
[Greyson Mansion]
Eric was enjoying dinner with the rest of the family when suddenly, David spoke up.
“When do you both plan to get married?” His gaze shifted to Eric, bringing him to a sudden halt.
He looked at Agnes as she reached out to gently touch his hand, smiling warmly. “Soon, Dad,” she said, and Eric nodded, managing a smile.
“I believe it’s time to officially announce the new CEO, especially since I will be stepping down to take on the role of chairperson,” David stated, leaving both Agnes and Eric by surprise.
“CEO?” Eric inquired, and David responded with a nod of affirmation.
“Yes, and I trust you won’t let me down,” he added.
Eric exchanged a thoughtful glance with David, who promptly asked a question. “What happened? Are you not happy?”
Eric contemplated whether David’s words were meant as a compliment or a mockery. Things had been much easier for him since he got involved with Agnes, but there were always these eyes hovering over him, reminding him of his role in their lives. Especially Dorothy, who barely acknowledged his presence.
“N-not in the slightest? However, I still suggest that you consider assigning someone who possesses greater capabilities than I do”. Eric didn’t want to sound greedy, though becoming the CEO would end up solving half of his problems. However, a sense of skepticism prevented him from fully surrendering.
“Why would you say that, darling? “See, even Dad believes you are more capable than anyone else of securing the position,” Agnes said, turning to her father for confirmation. “Right, Dad?” she asked.
“Certainly,” David replied with a smile before continuing with the dinner.
Despite everything seeming normal, Eric simply couldn’t accept the idea that David would view him as a possible candidate for the CEO’s position. But wasn’t this man cunning enough to play with anybody?
He reminded himself once again, ‘I can’t trust anyone in this house,’ before continuing with his dinner.

“You need to stop cursing me, Angel. It wasn’t my fault that from now on Seren wants us to sleep together in my… room.” Kalix deliberately elongated the last word, emphasizing that they would be sharing the same bed.
He observed her from the side as she shot him a glare, and he let out a chuckle.
“Don’t mock me, Kalix, or I will throw you out of your… room,” Winter warned, and he quickly zipped his lips, but the teasing persisted.
Winter found it difficult to remain still in his presence, and not to mention, she had breached the clause of not sharing the same bed not once, but twice. The situation had become overwhelming for her mental well-being, and the constant gaze he directed at her only added to her difficulty in finding peace.
“What’s keeping you awake? Are you intending to observe us throughout the night?” Winter couldn’t resist asking.
She recalled how, during a brief moment of wakefulness last night, Kalix remained awake. He hardly slept at all, yet the next morning he took her to the interview without displaying any signs of fatigue.
It left her pondering whether he was overly eager to have them share his bed or if he had just chosen to forgo sleep that night out of sheer happiness. But now that he was still awake, she wondered if Julian meant Kalix practically worked all night.
Kalix pivoted, directing his full attention toward Winter. “It’s difficult to sleep with you right in front of me,” he remarked, prompting Winter to roll her eyes in irritation.
‘Here it goes again.’
“How about you sleep in my room? That way, I won’t be held responsible for your lack of sleep.” Winter turned to face him and made a proposition.
“That’s not possible, Angel. I could stare at you all night and still manage to work for days without a word of complaint,” Winter creased, finding his words overwhelming.
She remembered the night they spent together in the hotel; Kalix had slept soundly throughout the night, so much so that when she quietly slipped out of the room, he remained deeply asleep.
“Do you have any issues with sleep, or is it just me who is causing the distraction?” This time, she asked seriously, causing Kalix to pause for a second, but again he masked his emotion and smiled.

“You aren’t a distraction, Angel. I truly can’t get enough of you. Your presence alone inspires me to persevere.” Kalix’s words cascade effortlessly, sweeping away all her uncertainties. They were so delightful that Winter felt as though she might soon develop diabetes.
“Oh, come on; you’re just saying that to try to win me over.” Winter pretended to be unconvinced by his words. She understood that Kalix was merely attempting to soften the truth, hoping to win her over.
“Are my words finally having an effect on you, or should I make another attempt?” he teased, catching her completely off guard.
Winter gaped, giving him a bewildered look and screeched, “You…”
Kalix couldn’t help but laugh; even her displeasure had a certain charm. But that was not the case here.
Winter may seem to be over-exaggerating in his quest to win her heart, yet every word he spoke was genuine and heartfelt. She simply couldn’t understand it.
She continued to stare at him in silence. At times, she found it incredibly challenging to deal with him and as she reflected on his words, she wondered if they were truly having an effect on her.
“Should I take your silence as a yes?” Kalix asked, pulling Winter out of her thoughts.
“No!” she protested, swiftly averting her gaze. Her heart pounded inside her chest as she refused to acknowledge what was happening to her.
This man was truly a devil who was now playing with both her mind and heart. But then she sneak a glance at him and pouted.
‘Did she catch a glimpse of disappointment in his eyes?’
Winter asked as she quickly looked away and closed her eyes, trying to empty her thoughts, yet his words and visage continued to intrude across her mind.
“Argh…ah!” Winter gaped as Kalix appeared beside her out of nowhere.
“Sh…don’t shout, or you’ll wake Star,” Kalix whispered, gently moving her to the side to make space for himself on her side of the bed.
“What are you doing?” Winter lifted herself up, watching him warily as he took a seat beside her.The king-size bed offered ample space, but he chose to sleep next to her.
“I want to sleep,” Kalix said, pulling her next to him. Before Winter could argue, he swiftly pulled the comforter up and wrapped his arm around her, securing her to the bed.
“Let go…” she hissed softly, her eyes shooting daggers at him.
Winter was trying to be quiet, not wanting to disturb her daughter’s sleep. However, the moment Kalix pressed his face into her neck, her eyes widened in surprise.
“You smell so good,” she heard him say, and the tension in her body slowly eased. The sudden shower of gentle kisses on her nape caught her completely off guard, and she blinked in surprise.
Winter immediately shut her eyes and bit her lips, feeling her body begin to heat up from his touch. Her grip on his hand around her waist slowly loosened, and she found herself turning to face him.
Winter was perplexed by how a man could exert such remarkable control over her. Yet, wasn’t it she who was merely succumbing to his charm?
“Good night, Angel,” Kalix said, planting a kiss on her forehead and pulling her closer, resting her face against his chest.
He wrapped his arms around her, embracing her warmly, and closed his eyes.
Winter was unaware of what had transpired, but the scent of his masculine cologne calmed her thoughts, and before she knew it, she had drifted off to sleep.
“Good night, Kalix,” she mumbled, bringing a smile onto his face.
