Chapter 95: Chapter 95: Doesn’t Mommy sneak into your room in the middle of the night?”
Thud!
Kalix pinned Winter against the door, his lips crashing onto hers in a desperate, hungry kiss.
One hand clasped her wrist above her head, while the other cupped her breast, his touch igniting fire along her skin. He devoured her as if there were no tomorrow.
Winter’s knees weakened, the sparks between them making her body tremble, her mind turning hazy.
His hand slowly trailed downward, brushing against her legs and hearing a sensual moan in return when-
Woof!
Woof!
“Oh my God, Flash!”
The couple jerked apart at the sound of the dog barking, their heated moment abruptly shattered as the room lights flicked on.
“Daddy? Mommy?”
Both Kalix and Winter shared a horrifying look watching Seren sitting up on the bed while brushing her eyes.
Seren blinked, glancing between her parents before looking down at Flash, who had happily trotted back to her after successfully ruining the couple’s moment.
“Star, why are you sleeping here?” Winter was the first to break the silence as she made her way to the bed.
“Mommy, I wanted to sleep with you and Daddy. I know you secretly sneak out of your room at night and sleep here.”
“…”
Winter’s face turned crimson. “W-What? Who said that? I don’t- I never! Don’t I always wake up next to you?” She stammered, rushing to deny it.
Kalix bit back a laugh, amusement dancing in his eyes as he controlled himself and joined them on the bed.
Seren, however, wasn’t convinced. She turned to her father, her tiny brows furrowing in determination. “Daddy, tell me the truth. Doesn’t Mommy sneak into your room in the middle of the night?”
Winter always thought Seren was a deep sleeper, only waking up to the sound of her alarm clock. Clearly, she had been wrong.
Kalix smirked, his gaze shifting to Winter, who frantically shook her head in denial.
Kalix chuckled, reaching out to ruffle Seren’s hair. “Well, I’m not sure if Mommy does that, because I always wake up alone,” he said, making the saddest face he could muster. “But I do miss sleeping with you two.”
Seren gaped at him, while Winter let out a quiet sigh of relief, thinking she had escaped the worst.
“Oh, Daddy,” Seren gasped dramatically before standing up and wrapping her small arms around him. She patted his back gently, mimicking the way a mother would console a child.
“Mommy, we shouldn’t let Daddy sleep alone. He looks so sad,” she declared, turning to her mother with a determined look. “He should sleep with us!”
Winter’s eyes widened at the unexpected turn of events. “What?”
Kalix blinked at her innocently, his gaze filled with silent pleading. “Yes, Mommy,” he echoed, his lips twitching into a smirk. “Daddy would love to sleep with you two.”
Winter’s lips twitched in irritation. She saw right through his act.
“That won’t be possible, Star,” she said firmly. “Our bed is too small for Daddy to fit in. Besides, he works late at night. How will you sleep with the lights on?”
Seren frowned, considering her mother’s words. She hated sleeping with the lights on. But then she looked up at Kalix’s “sad” face again, and guilt tugged at her little heart.
After a long pause, she sighed. “Daddy, if you like sleeping with Mommy, then fine. She can endure sleeping with the lights on. But I need to wake up early for school, and I don’t want to go with panda eyes.”

Winter’s jaw dropped. She had expected Seren to reject Kalix’s ploy, not wholeheartedly agree to it!
Kalix, on the other hand, grinned in triumph, while Winter facepalmed, realizing she had just lost this battle.
Quickly tucking Seren back into bed, Winter stepped out of her room, exhaling in relief.
“So?”
She jolted when Kalix suddenly blocked her path, her heart skipping a beat. Shooting him a wary glare, she placed a hand over her chest.
“Can you stop scaring me?” she huffed, rubbing the spot where her heart raced.
Kalix, however, only grinned, clearly amused.
They had already finished dinner, yet sleep was the last thing on Kalix’s mind.
“Come, let me show you something,” he said, grabbing her hand before she could protest.
“Kalix-” Winter started, but he was already leading her upstairs.
Confused but curious, she allowed him to pull her along. The moment they stepped out onto the terrace, Winter’s breath hitched.
Her eyes widened as she took in the breathtaking view of the city lights twinkling like fallen stars, the vast sky stretching endlessly above them. A cool breeze brushed against her skin, carrying the faint scent of rain.
“This is…” she whispered, her voice trailing off.
Kalix watched her reaction with satisfaction.
“Amazing,” she finally breathed, unable to look away.
Satisfied with Winter’s reaction, Kalix guided her toward the swing and helped her sit.
“I never thought you were into stars and the moon,” Winter remarked, turning her gaze to him with a teasing glint in her eyes.
Kalix smirked at her sneaky comment and reached out to pinch her cheek.
“I can be romantic if you want,” he teased.
Winter couldn’t help but smile. “That would be too much. I’d probably puke if you started picking lines from movies or something. Those make me cringe,” she muttered, quickly shifting her eyes back to the sky.
Kalix chuckled, but then his expression softened.
“My mom used to love watching the stars and moon,” he said suddenly.
Winter turned to him, surprised by his revelation.
A faint, almost wistful smile lingered on Kalix’s face at the mention of his mother. It was rare for him to talk about his deceased parents, and now that he had, Winter felt drawn in , to wanting to hear more.
They both had lost their mothers. But unlike her, Kalix had lost his father too, while hers had been alive yet absent, never really caring.
“Tell me more about her,” she asked gently, resting her head against her knuckles as she studied him intently.
The swing continued to move in a slow, soothing rhythm, while their eyes remained locked.
Kalix rarely spoke about his parents. The memories carried both pain and longing, reopening wounds he had long tried to bury.
But sitting here, under Winter’s quiet, expectant gaze, it didn’t feel as heavy. For the first time in a long time, the past didn’t seem so suffocating.
As if, just for this moment, it didn’t hurt as much.
“She was a great lady,” Kalix murmured, his voice laced with quiet admiration. “A loving wife, a caring mother, and a soulful human. She was like the sun shining bright in our skies.”
He glanced down at his hands, a rare moment of shyness flickering across his face.
Winter watched him intently. “And your dad?” she asked softly.
Kalix hesitated for a brief moment, as if searching for the right words. When he finally looked back at her, his expression was firm. “He was an inspiration. Someone we kids looked up to.”
There was a distinct pride in his voice, a glimmer in his eyes that made Winter’s heart swell with warmth.
“They both sound like wonderful people,” she said.
Kalix nodded. “They were the best parents anyone could ask for, but-” He paused, his voice faltering as the painful reality of their absence settled over him.
Winter immediately caught the hesitation. Without a second thought, she reached for his hand, squeezing it gently. “That’s okay,” she murmured. “You don’t have to continue.”
Her reassurance softened the tension in his shoulders, grounding him in the moment.
Silence settled between them, comfortable and unspoken, as Winter turned her gaze back to the night sky. Her hand remained in his, fingers curled around his warmth, and slowly, she let her head rest against his shoulder.
“You know,” she whispered suddenly, drawing his attention. “I hardly remember my mom.”
Kalix tensed slightly, caught off guard. He knew much about Winter. Her struggles, her strength, but hearing her speak of her mother so openly, and with such ease, surprised him.
Something in his chest tightened.
Because, for the first time, it felt like she was letting him in.
“But whatever memories I do have of her… they remind me of a kind lady,” Winter murmured, her voice soft yet steady.
She had only been seven when she lost her mother to an illness she hadn’t even understood at the time. Now, as she gazed up at the vast night sky, she liked to think that maybe, just maybe her mother had become one of the stars.
Kalix watched her intently, his gaze unwavering as if trying to read the emotions flickering across her face.
Suddenly, Winter let out a small chuckle, though it lacked true mirth. “It’s not that I’ve forgotten her,” she said. “I just want to remember her with all the good memories… and not the pain my dad inflicted on her during her final days.”
Her eyes stung with unshed tears, but she stubbornly refused to let them fall.
No child ever wanted to see their parents fight. No child wanted to watch love crumble into something ugly and painful. No child should have to witness the very people who were supposed to protect them destroy each other instead.
And yet, she had.
And it had shaped her in ways she was still trying to understand.
“That’s why you agreed to stay with me in the first place,” Kalix said, his voice quiet yet firm, pulling Winter’s attention back to him.
She blinked, caught off guard.
“Because you didn’t want to keep Star away from both her parents’ love,” he added, watching her closely.
Winter’s lips parted slightly, but no words came out. He had seen right through her, straight to the core of her decision was the fear of history repeating itself, of Seren experiencing the same pain she once had.
She lowered her gaze, gripping the edge of the swing. “I just… didn’t want her to grow up feeling like something was missing,” she admitted softly.
Kalix reached out, gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. “You’re a good mother, Winter,” he murmured. “Better than you think.”
Her chest tightened at his words, at the unexpected warmth in them.
Because for the first time, she wasn’t sure if staying had only been for Seren’s sake… or if, somewhere along the way, she had stayed for him too.
