Chapter 260: When True Family Turns Against Each Other
Selina didn’t ask the question on a whim.

She simply felt there were too many coincidences—The antique Morris’s late wife had supposedly purchased ended up in her mother’s possession.

Angelica just happened to become the Morris family’s heiress.

Who exactly was Mrs. Morris?

Selina had a hunch—could she have been her mother’s friend?

But to her surprise, Joe’s face turned dark. “No comment.”

This thief had the audacity to ask about Victoria’s name?

Did Selina think she was worthy of even knowing it?

Angelica had always claimed she was mistreated by Selina while living at the Clark household. Joe figured maybe Selina’s arrogance could be excused—after all, she was raised as the family’s heiress.

But now? Selina had stolen Victoria’s keepsake. Joe could no longer stay quiet.

“Miss Clark, I’ll let the matter of the Mercy Petal Lamp go, but from now on, let’s keep our distance.”

“And Mr. Reid,” Joe continued coldly, “no matter how you deny it, you and Angelica have a betrothal. You owe the Morris family an explanation.”

With that, he turned and left.

The crowd’s eyes fell on Selina—sympathetic, mocking, disdainful.

Of all the people to cross, she’d chosen the Morris family. And with the engagement between Logan and Angelica still hovering overhead, what would Selina do if Logan chose to honor it one day?

Angelica’s expression shifted several times before she put on her usual saintly act.

“Selina, you were too out of line. My mother is no longer with us. Anyone would be upset if you brought her up like that—especially my father, who’s your elder. You really put me in a tough spot. But… I’ll talk to him for you.”

Selina watched the Morris family leave, eyes narrowing slowly.

With the main players gone, the crowd began to disperse.

Logan, voice calm but meaningful, said, “Mrs. Morris has always been somewhat of a mystery. But I recently discovered something.”

Selina looked at him curiously.

Logan said lightly, “Morris’s official marital status is—”

He paused. “Unmarried.”

“What?!” Selina was stunned. “Unmarried? Not widowed?”

By all accounts, if Mrs. Morris had passed away and Joe had never remarried, he should be listed as widowed.

But if he’s listed as unmarried, that could only mean—he was never married to her.

“They never registered their marriage?”

Logan smirked slightly. “That’s why some insiders call Morris’s loyalty legendary. But since they weren’t legally married, there’s no official record to trace her through.”

Selina frowned, unsure how to process her opinion of Morris. She didn’t like the family—but she couldn’t deny Joe seemed like a devoted partner and father.

Too bad his daughter was Angelica.

Just then, Jack hurried over. “Sir, a call from the madam—your grandmother.”

Logan answered.

A soft, aged voice came through the line. “Logan.”

“Grandma.”

“Earlier Jack asked me if we ever arranged an engagement with the Morris family…” Grandma Perry’s voice was tinged with guilt and emotion. “I’m afraid it’s true. It’s my fault.”

Logan’s jaw clenched.

Grandma Perry’s voice turned more urgent. “Back then, I became quite close with Mrs. Morris—despite our age difference. She was barely a month pregnant when I suggested we arrange a betrothal between our children.”

Logan’s tone was heavy. “I wasn’t even living with the Reid family twenty years ago.”

“No… you were still lost to us. But for some reason, I made that arrangement with you in mind…”

She sighed. “Please don’t tell Selina about this yet.”

Logan recalled the question Selina had asked earlier.

“Do you remember what kind of person Mrs. Morris was?”

Grandma Perry pressed her fingers to her temples, thinking for a long while before finally shaking her head.

“My memory’s too poor… she was a close friend despite the age gap, but now all that’s left is a faint outline. I can’t remember anymore.”

Logan didn’t push.

After ending the call, Selina blinked—she’d heard everything.

“So… the engagement is real?”

Jack practically stopped breathing.

Oh no, oh no—just when things were finally going well between Mr. and Mrs. Reid, now this engagement bombshell drops?! What was Mr. Reid going to do?!

Logan looked utterly relaxed.

“The engagement is real,” he said lazily, “but who says Angelica is?”

Selina caught on instantly, her expression complicated.

“You’re saying… Angelica’s pretending to be the Morris family’s real daughter?”

That couldn’t be, could it? Joe and Kyle weren’t fools.

Logan raised an eyebrow, amused.

“Mrs. Reid, how about we place a little bet?”

At the Morris estate.

Kyle was fuming.

Angelica gently soothed him, “Don’t be mad, big brother. Maybe Selina’s Mercy Petal Lamp really is the authentic one. Maybe Mom was tricked back then—”

“Impossible!” Kyle snapped. “Angelica, why are you still defending her at a time like this?!”

“Our mother was Mrs. Morris. Who would dare deceive her?! That lamp was her favorite antique! She said it’d be part of your dowry!”

Joe let out a long sigh.

It was true. Victoria had adored the Mercy Petal Lamp. She once said it was beautiful and valuable—something any daughter would love.

She dreamed of having a daughter to pass it down to.

Back then, her face had glowed with joy.

But who would’ve thought one tragedy would take her away forever?

All these years, Joe had often clutched the Mercy Petal Lamp late at night, pretending Victoria was still by his side.

But now… to hear it was a forgery?

Angelica’s eyes shimmered with something unreadable.

Now she understood—

The Mercy Petal Lamp from the Morris estate being fake made perfect sense.

Because Mrs. Morris was Victoria. And Victoria… was Selina’s biological mother.

Victoria must have taken the original lamp with her when she left.

But the Morris family didn’t know that.

To them, Selina was just a thief.

The real Morris heiress… hated by her own family.

The thought filled Angelica with wicked glee.

“Don’t be sad, Daddy,” she said sweetly. “If there’s a chance, I’ll try to get the lamp back from Selina.”

Joe looked at her with deep affection.

This daughter really was the best gift Victoria had ever given him—

So graceful, so understanding, so gentle.

Angelica’s eyes flickered as she added with a sigh, “But even if Selina gives the lamp back, there are some things she’ll never return… like my engagement.”

“I saved Logan’s life four years ago. Fate brought us together… and now it turns out we were engaged all along.”

“But fate is cruel. Selina…” She looked down, voice trembling, “Dad, what should I do?”

Joe’s heart ached for her.

“Don’t worry, Angelica. The engagement is rightfully yours. Take Kyle and go pick out a ring sometime.”

Meanwhile, after the antique showcase ended, Logan was pulled into a business conversation with a partner nearby.

Selina, meanwhile, was still pondering his words: “What if Angelica isn’t the real one?”

Before she could make sense of it, she looked up—

And suddenly saw someone.
