Chapter 264: Fickle by Nature
James nearly fainted.
He just wanted to show off Angelica’s supposed connection to Logan—how could he have known Logan would actually show up?
“Selina, I’m your father, and of course, that makes me Mr. Reid’s father-in-law—”
“Mr. Clark, for the love of God, shut your mouth!” a shareholder suddenly stepped forward and snapped.
“The way you treated Selina just now? You clearly don’t see her as your daughter. And now you want to ride Mr. Reid’s coattails by claiming to be his father-in-law? Have you no shame?”
“This whole mess today is Angelica’s fault. But instead of holding her responsible, you lashed out at Selina and pissed off Mr. Reid. We’re done here—no dinner for us!”
Logan’s icy stare from earlier had already shaken the group to their core. Now, watching James continue to embarrass himself, they scrambled to distance themselves.
“Mr. Reid, Angelica told us she booked this place—we had no idea Celestial Feast was closed!”
“Seriously, how could Angelica be this careless? Saying she invited us and not even reserving a table?”
“Then again, she’s got Morris Family backing her. Guess she thinks it’s okay to toy with us. Whatever, we’ll suck it up.”
Selina curled her lips into a smile and looked straight at James.
Trying to show off and score points for Angelica—what a joke. Now it had all blown up in his face.
His expression twisted, but even now, he couldn’t bring himself to apologize.
Katie, practically seething, staggered forward and snapped, “Selina, we’re still your elders—how dare you—”
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Jack suddenly stepped in with a polished smile. “Our madam says, since you’ve all come, it wouldn’t be right to turn you away. She and Miss Angelica are family, so she’s willing to shoulder Angelica’s mistake.”

“You are welcome to dine at Celestial Feast—at half price. Some have chosen to question our madam’s intentions, but she is not so petty. Please, this way.”
Logan’s voice followed, calm but firm. “Whatever Selina decides, I support it fully.”
The room buzzed with surprise—what a turnaround!
A half-price meal at Celestial Feast, and with Mr. Reid’s personal approval? That was a privilege. More importantly, this was a signal—Logan was letting them in. It meant they weren’t cut off. Yet.
If they could stay in Logan’s good graces, their futures might still be bright.
The shareholders instantly broke into smiles, falling over themselves with praise.
“Selina, we knew you still cared about us.”
“Yes, I’ve watched Selina grow up—felt terrible for how she was treated! But it wasn’t my place to interfere in Clark Family business…”
“Selina, if anyone bullies you again, come to us. If your father won’t protect you, we will.”
“Mr. Clark really misjudged things. Why was he so obsessed with Angelica anyway? She’s not even his daughter—”
“He did it all for Katie. Abandoning his wife for a mistress? Foolish.”
Selina’s smile was unreadable. These people were nothing but opportunists, blowing wherever the wind went.
Letting them in wasn’t about kindness—it was about the show.
James, face flushed from the veiled insults, swallowed his rage and followed the crowd toward the restaurant—only to be stopped cold.
“Mr. Clark. Mrs. Clark. That’s far enough,” Jack said, smiling without warmth. “Apologies, but you haven’t apologized to our madam yet. You may not enter.”
Selina said with biting sarcasm, “Jack, you’re overthinking it. There’s no way my father and Mrs. Bryant would apologize to me. They’d rather walk out with their pride than bow their heads.”
Jack raised a brow. “Oh? Celestial Feast is offering half-off tonight, plus some exclusive promotions. These kinds of events and banquets come in handy for business. Are they really sure?”
Selina played along smoothly. “I’ve been their daughter for twenty years—don’t you think I know them by now? Mrs. Bryant is the current Mrs. Clark. If she had to apologize to me, the biological daughter of James’s first wife, where would she put her face?”
Jack gave a thoughtful nod. “That’s a shame. We were also planning to give each guest a ticket to HQ Group’s annual gala. But since Mr. Clark clearly has no need for such connections, let’s forget it. Security—please see them out.”
James’s knees almost gave out. His heart sank to the floor.
Celestial Feast… HQ Group’s gala ticket… It was the kind of event he could only dream of attending.
He had been this close—and now? Gone. Completely gone. What the hell went wrong?!
…
After James was thrown out, Selina’s mood noticeably lifted.
“Katie was practically frothing at the mouth insisting I’m James’s biological daughter. Tch… she’s definitely hiding something.”
Logan took a slow sip of red wine and replied lazily, “Mrs. Reid, have you considered another possibility?”
Selina blinked. “What possibility?”
“That Angelica is actually James’s biological daughter. And your identities were switched.”
Selina: “…?”
She stared, stunned. “But if that’s true—what would the Clarks gain from it?”
Her mom married James and brought him tremendous wealth. Selina couldn’t believe any man would willingly let someone else’s kid live under his roof without getting something in return.
If Angelica were really his biological daughter, why keep it secret? What was the angle?
Logan gave a dry, amused smile. “What’s the angle?”
He leaned in slightly. “Think about Angelica’s current connection to the Morris Family. What do you think James and Katie were aiming for?”
If they pulled it off, Angelica wouldn’t just be some illegitimate Clark child—she’d be the heiress of a top-tier family. Way better.
But if that were true…
Selina suddenly stiffened. “Then wouldn’t that make Morris Chairman… my real father?”
“Just a theory,” Logan said coolly.
“Maybe it’s not that far off,” Selina muttered. “Katie and Angelica have been trying to steal my life since we were kids. Maybe the Clarks really were covering for her this whole time.”
She rested her chin on her palm, eyes glinting with curiosity. Her tone turned syrupy sweet, mockingly soft.
“But Angelica is your savior, after all. If I keep digging into her past like this, won’t it make you feel guilty, Logan?”
Logan glanced at her with a look full of meaning.
Four years ago, the same girl used to talk with that same sarcastic tone sometimes.
He couldn’t imagine Angelica ever speaking like that. If Angelica really wasn’t who she said she was… if she’d faked being the Morris heiress… could she have also faked being the girl from four years ago?
“What are you thinking about?” Selina asked sharply, watching his face. Why wasn’t he answering? Was he actually feeling sorry for Angelica?!
“I was just thinking, Mrs. Reid…”
Knock, knock.
A knock on the door cut him off. Before he could even respond, the door opened on its own—and in walked a woman in a fitted cheongsam.
Her eyes fluttered shyly as they landed on Logan, her gaze never wavering.
“Mr. Reid, the manager asked me to bring this wine over,” she said, pouring it smoothly before practically draping herself across him. She leaned in, voice dripping with intent. “Logan…”
Selina: “…?”
Excuse me. Who the hell is this chick? And why does she call me hubby so intimately?!?!
