Chapter 114: Shrill Alarm
Amelia felt like she was floating on a sea of clouds. There was a pressing warmth at her side that pulled her into a deep slumber, but the brightness at the back of her eyelids was slowly, but surely becoming unbearable.
Reluctantly, Amelia opened her eyes, only to find herself face to face with Matteo. Immediately, all vestiges of sleepiness left her body, and she quickly tried to get up. However, she soon realized that was a nigh impossible task, for Matteo’s arm was wrapped around her waist like an iron bar as if he was afraid she would flee from him.
Amelia’s face flushed a bright red as she recalled the activities of the previous night. She had given into her impulses and slept with Matteo, and there was a tiny, vindictive part of her that couldn’t help comparing the night she experienced with her experiences with Caleb.
Matteo was an infinitely more generous lover than Caleb was. Her entire body ached so tenderly that she didn’t want to move an inch, yet she felt nourished from within, as though she was a flower that was finally watered with love and care.
Her eyes were drawn to Matteo’s eyelashes. They were so long and lovely that the morning sun had cast the finest of shadows on his skin. Her hand gently cupped the side of his face, marveling at his looks.
That gentle action caused Matteo to stir, blinking blearily up at her. Embarrassed, Amelia quickly pulled her hand away, but she wasn’t fast enough. Matteo grabbed her hand, enveloping it in his warmth, his lips curled into a satisfied smile when he realized it was Amelia reaching out for him.
What happened the night before wasn’t just a dream.
“Good morning,” he said, his voice low and husky, causing a frisson of desire to course through her. He had no business sounding so good so early in the morning. “Did you sleep well?”
“Morning,” Amelia said, a voice in a quiet whisper. She didn’t want to break the calm that surrounded them. “I slept well. How about you?”
Matteo’s body was bathed in the radiance of the morning sun, and her eyes couldn’t help but rove greedily over his exposed skin and defined musculature, wanting to etch this moment into her memory.
“I’ll give you a guess,” Matteo murmured to Amelia, relishing in the sight of her naked body. The covers had fallen to her waist, leaving her upper body exposed to his hungry eyes. Last night, he had the honor of touching her, of bringing her pleasure, but instead of satiating his desires, it merely caused him to feel more desperate, more longing.
He leaned closer and pecked her lips, and Amelia wrapped her arms around his neck, fully intent on continuing their activities from the past night, but a sharp knock on the door distracted them.
“Ignore it,” Matteo whispered, his mouth moving to nibble at Amelia’s earlobe. “They’ll go away soon.”
Unfortunately, the knocking continued ceaselessly, thoroughly destroying whatever romantic mood there was. Matteo and Amelia reluctantly pried themselves apart, and Matteo stormed to the door.
“Matteo, your clothes!” Amelia protested, but Matteo seemed not to hear.
He was a man on a mission, and said mission was to banish pests from their surroundings. Housekeeping knew better than to disturb a couple so early in the morning, which meant that there could only be two people with the audacity to wake him up.
True enough, he heard the dulcet tones of Emmeline Hawthorne from the other end of the door.
“Matteo! Amelia! It’s time for breakfast!”
He opened the door, ready to make his displeasure known.
“Emmeline, do you know what hour it is?” Matteo barked out irritably. “I’m busy.”
Emmeline was dressed up to the nines, in her form-fitting turtleneck with her hair softly curled and makeup tastefully done, highlighting the dewy softness of her skin as well as the beautiful blue of her eyes.
However, Matteo didn’t spare her a second glance to appreciate her looks. He merely crossed his arms and glared at her impassively.
Emmeline’s face turned red when she realized that Matteo was completely naked. Her eyes went lower, and lower, to his exposed manhood which the door barely covered.
“Matteo!” Emmeline screeched, covering her eyes with her hands, but Matteo spotted her pupils blinking wildly behind her hands as her eyes fixated on his nether regions. He wondered why she was behaving so immaturely since he must have given her an eyeful when he was drugged to the nines.
Just remembering that incident caused his scowl to deepen.
“You’re― you’re naked!” Emmeline exclaimed.
“Scram. I’m busy. I have many things to do,” Matteo said with a growl.
“And I guess Amelia Kentwood is one of them, eh brother?” Aiden commented, popping his head out from his room, impervious to the death glare Matteo shot him.
His hair was mussed, and he was similarly nude save for a pair of boxes. Judging by the marks on his neck, he had also brought home someone the night before.
“Emmeline, have you considered donating your voice for phone alarms? Your voice could wake the dead,” Aiden continued.

Amelia, who had gotten tired of waiting for Matteo, simply gathered the covers around herself and made her way to the door, relishing in the ugly expression that crossed Emmeline’s face when she caught sight of the marks Matteo had left her the night prior.
Just to hammer it home, she sidled closer to Matteo’s side, and he beamed at her with obvious delight, wrapping an arm around her waist and kissed her lips, uncaring of his own nudity.
“Thanks for the wake-up call, but as you can see, we were a little preoccupied. Breakfast will have to wait.” Amelia shrugged, then she couldn’t help the mischievous smile that bloomed on her face, as she thought of the perfect follow-up, bold as it was.
“He’s eating me instead,” she blurted out, before she could lose her nerve, and was rewarded promptly with Emmeline’s outraged screech as she stormed away. Aiden let out a low wolf whistle.
“Lucky bastard,” Aiden muttered. “Well, you two lovebirds disgust me. I’m going to drown my sorrows in wine.”
However, Matteo had slammed the door shut, causing Aiden’s words to echo alone in the deserted corridor. His gaze turned ravenous as he bracketed Amelia against the door. Amelia let out a squeak.
“Very well played, Mrs. Montgomery,” Matteo murmured. “I will have my meal now.”
And what could Amelia do, but let him devour her?
