Chapter 155: Test of Innocence
“Matteo, just the man I was looking for,” Caleb commented as he took a quick step back, deliberately making himself sound nice and friendly. His father could not be allowed to know the depth of animosity they had with each other. If he did, Caleb would be raked over the coals for failing to build a positive relationship with the Montgomery heir.
His father was already displeased that he let Amelia slip out of his fingers.
Speaking of which, Amelia was standing behind Matteo, looking no less furious. If it wasn’t a public occasion, Matteo had a feeling she would have kneed him in the balls, propriety be damned.
“Mr. Walton,” Matteo said cordially enough to the older Walton, before turning his frosty gaze onto Caleb. “Caleb Walton. I see no reason you should be harassing my staff, an intern nonetheless.”
Caleb let out a genial laugh, his eyes quickly darting to his father. “Harassment is such a harsh way of putting it! This is nothing more than a little encouragement between men. Isn’t that right, Carlo?”
Carlo shot him a glare from the corner of his eyes but kept quiet out of sheer spite. Matteo wasn’t a fool; he caught sight of the dirt strewn all over Carlo’s table and knew it could only come from Amelia’s tiny gift.
“Destroying someone’s possessions hardly seems encouraging to me.” Matteo smiled blandly, while he internally stewed with anger. “But I’ll take your word for it. I hope you feel similarly encouraged when I pay your company a visit.”
Caleb’s father gave him a judgemental look at the implied threat and Caleb quickly pasted a smile on his face as well. “I must say, you have become uncharacteristically charitable of late. Your fiancé must be a good influence on you.”
“Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for you,” Matteo replied without missing a beat. “To bully your half-brother at his workplace after you and your father heartlessly tossed him into the orphanage is cruel, even for you.”
Gasps filled the room as his words registered in everyone’s ears. With Matteo’s words, it was impossible for people to miss the similarities in their features. Amelia’s mouth fell open in shock. What was Matteo playing at? Carlo would never be able to hold his head high after this!
However, Matteo’s face was still, like a calm lake in the middle of a windless spring. So Amelia decided to trust him.
Meanwhile, Will Walton’s face purpled, and he pointed a shaking finger at Matteo.
“Matteo Montgomery, watch your mouth!”
“I will when your heir watches his actions,” Matteo retorted. “Do not think for one moment I am not privy to your deeds behind closed doors. If you hadn’t bothered to pay me a visit, I would be fine with letting sleeping dogs lie. But Caleb Walton’s actions today have gone beyond the line.”
Matteo stepped forward, glaring directly at Caleb. He wanted good old Will Walton to know that whatever ugly scandal that emerged from today’s actions was all due to his precious son.
“If you had an issue with Carlo’s employment, the right course of action would be to bring it up with the hiring manager, or even bring it up to me directly. Instead, you waltz into my company without even giving me notice. In case you’re unaware, this is trespassing and a blatant disregard for my authority.”
“Mr. Walton, is this how you teach your son to treat potential business partners?”
If Will Walton was a better father, he would have defended Caleb’s actions. But since Matteo knew he was a self-serving snake, Will latched himself at the lifeline Matteo provided, quickly pushing the blame onto Caleb so as to not burn the bridge between the two families.
“Of course not!” Will Walton thundered. “Caleb, you said you had made prior arrangements for our visit. Why is Matteo Montgomery accusing you of trespassing?”
“Father, I did―” Caleb protested, but it fell on deaf ears. Fine, since it has come to this, he might as well go all out to achieve his one goal.
He needed to get rid of Carlo so that the reputation for the Hope for Scholars charity would hit rock bottom.
After all, if the best they could provide was a delinquent with anger management issues and a sketchy family background who couldn’t last a week at work, then wouldn’t it mean the entire charity was full of useless trash, who were nothing more than the dregs of society?
“It’s precisely because Carlo is my half-brother that I am here,” Caleb said, puffing his chest out. “Even if we are blood-related, I cannot abide nepotism. He is clearly unqualified for his post in your office, let alone a personal mentorship with your department head. You could have gotten another more qualified candidate to replace him.”
“And how would you know if Carlo is unqualified?” Matteo asked with one raised eyebrow.
“Well… look at him! You have his past records!” Caleb blustered. “There’s no way he passed the exams on his own merit. I know Amelia here paid him a visit before the examinations. Maybe she slipped him an answer sheet or two!”
More gasps echoed throughout the room, and Carlo’s entire body was shaking in fear and anger. Insulting him was bad enough, he refused to endure any insults to Amelia’s person. “She didn’t help me at all, you nitwit! I improved on my own!”
“I’ll believe it when I see it,” Caleb scoffed, glaring disdainfully at Carlo as though he was a puppy that peed on his shoes.
“Then we’ll just have to make you see it then,” Matteo said with a shrug. “Carlo and the rest of you interns, please gather in the meeting room along with Mr. Caleb Walton and Mr. Will Walton.”
“What?” There was a chorus of confused replies.
“I wanted to set this test for next week, but since we have such honored guests, I see no reason to waste this opportunity. Everyone, take your laptops and follow me.”

Befuddled, the interns followed after him like ducklings. Meanwhile, Caleb gnashed his teeth, but he couldn’t deny himself the chance to witness Carlo’s downfall. Amelia and Matteo’s faith in Carlo would be their undoing.
They gathered in the meeting room, and each intern was seated a seat away from the next, to prevent cheating. Carlo avoided the incensed looks from the other interns― in their eyes, he was now public enemy number one! It was because of him that they were suddenly forced to be tested with an audience.
Matteo nonchalantly booted up the main computer, and soon all the laptop screens of the interns were shown on the big screen. They all had the same program running― statistical analytics. In front of each of them was a thick stack of documents.
“Now, let’s begin the test,” Matteo said, with an evil glint in his eyes. “The individual who gets the closest results will be considered the victor.” He took out a sheet of paper and began to read out a case study.
“Company X has been tracking the monthly sales data for its fifty stores over the past three years. They believe that a new marketing strategy implemented six months ago has resulted in more sales. As such, your job is to analyze the raw data given to determine whether there is a significant difference in average monthly sales―”
The other interns began to frantically enter their data on the screen. Meanwhile, Carlo was flipping through his stack of paper, a befuddled expression on his face.
Caleb smirked. He knew it. This boy didn’t know anything!
