Chapter 158: Mistake in the Data
“You definitely sneaked him a hint or two!” Caleb declared, refusing to believe this turn of events.
He stormed over to Carlo and snatched his stack of data, riffling through them frantically, his eyes desperately trying to find any hint of foul play. Matteo Montgomery must have written something in secret, or in code, to let Carlo know what was the right thing to do!
However, there didn’t seem to be anything out of the ordinary. Incensed, Caleb whirled around and snatched the notes of the poor intern who was sitting closest to him. He flipped through the both of them like a man deranged, looking for any differences in the figures given.
But no, the information provided was identical. The content was the same. Matteo had not slipped anything special inside the notes given to Carlo. Caleb slammed the papers back on the desk with a hearty scowl, his hands twitching as though he longed to squeeze Matteo’s neck.
“I’m not in the habit of allowing my interns to cheat,” Matteo said wryly, as he gave a placid smile at Caleb’s blatant frustration. It was entertaining to watch the way he desperately tried not to throw a tantrum in front of his father and teenagers a decade younger than him.
“One must wonder why foul play is the first thing your mind jumps to when someone performs extraordinarily well. Is there something you wish to tell us, Mr. Walton?” Matteo continued, inwardly delighting at the dark look that crossed Will Walton’s face.
Hopefully, he’ll still want Caleb after what Matteo was going to do to him.
He cleared his throat. “If you’re open to learning more, I’ll gladly explain how I arrived at this conclusion.”
“You can take your explanation and shove it up your―”
“I would like to hear it,” Will Walton said, interrupting his son. “Your data looks… interesting. I would love to hear your thoughts.”
“Father!”
“Be quiet and listen, perhaps you might be able to learn something from Matteo here,” Will barked out.
Caleb fell silent, and Matteo began to explain. First of all, he highlighted the discrepancies in the data set he had given the interns. Taken at face value, they painted a rosy picture.
However, it turned out that the other interns, in their haste to complete the report, had entered data haphazardly and hence arrived at the wrong conclusions.
Basically, he had set a trap for them. Was it terrible to do this to interns who basically trusted him? Yes. But it was better that they learned this lesson now than for them to be screwed over when they climbed up the corporate ladder.
“Only Carlo checked that the numbers he used were correct, and used the correct tests, so he could form the right conclusion. While his language was harsh, he had highlighted the problems accurately.”
“In short, Carlo is more than capable, more than deserving of his place in my company. Does anyone have any other comments?”
Caleb’s face purpled, but nothing emerged from his mouth, even as he raised a shaking finger to point at Matteo. Amelia wanted to fling her arms in the air and scream with delight. Vindication was sweet indeed. But she resisted the urge and merely clapped enthusiastically to congratulate Carlo for his success.
There was a hesitant pause before the others followed suit. The room slowly, but surely, filled with applause. The interns knew that Amelia Kentwood was going to marry their CEO in the future, so they’d better show her some support.
After all, they’d be foolish to act like sore losers in front of her and her future husband.
Meanwhile, Carlo could only blink in disbelief as the news slowly sunk in, and the sound of applause filled his ears. He stared at the screen. He got it right?
He did!
Fuck yeah! He leaped up from his seat and let out a victorious whoop, shooting his bastard half-brother a victorious smirk, before clearing his throat and bowing low.
“Thanks a lot for this opportunity, Mr. Montgomery. I will work hard to prove that I am deserving of your trust,” Carlo said. Let it not be said that he couldn’t suck up like a pro when the need for it arose.
He sat back down and tried not to seem too smug, but judging from the displeased faces of his fellow interns, he wasn’t succeeding.
Well, too bad for them. That was a problem for future Carlo to solve.
“I trust that you will make me proud,” Matteo replied. He then turned to Will Walton. There was an odd sparkle in his eye as though he knew of a secret the others did not. He asked, “I trust this will allay your concerns?”
Will Walton gave a brief, jerky nod. “We’re done here. Caleb, it’s time to go.”
“Father!” Caleb protested. His father couldn’t be giving up just like that, couldn’t he?
“I’ll get someone to send you out,” Matteo said, his voice becoming more cheerful almost immediately. “As for the rest of you, I hope you treat this as a learning opportunity. Haste makes waste, especially in our line of work. Do you understand me?”

“Yes Sir,” the interns chorused obediently.
“Dismissed,” Matteo said, and as one, everyone filled out of the room.
Caleb and his father were escorted out of the building. The moment they entered their car, Caleb burst out in anger.
“Father, you’re letting it go just like that? Carlo’s working for the enemy now! That little twerp doesn’t deserve―”
“Silence!” Will Walton thundered, slamming his hand against the seat with a heavy thud.
Caleb stared wide-eyed at this display of temper from his father. His father had never lost his cool when it came to him. That was a privilege reserved for his useless bastard siblings.
“You have no idea what just happened, do you?”
“What happened?” Caleb repeated. “Carlo must have found a way to cheat!”
“You foolish boy, Carlo is the least of your concerns now.” His father’s face was darker than a stormcloud. “Didn’t you notice anything familiar about the data when you were looking at it?”
“…No?” Caleb scrunched his brows, racking his brain. “It’s a random case study, Father. He must have made it up. What’s the problem?”
“The data was of W&W Industries!” Will Walton roared. “And according to their analysis, you’re running our company to the ground! Even your half-brother from the orphanage can see it, so why can’t you?!”
