Chapter 159: Gold & Diamonds
Caleb’s eyes widened.
“I―”
“You’d better head back and check through every operation that has fallen under your supervision ever since you took over W&W,” Will Walton warned. “Your marriage with Amelia Kentwood has taught you nothing.”
Caleb’s face darkened as he clenched his hands into tight fists. “We were poor―”
“And yet Amelia Kentwood turned out to be the granddaughter of the richest man in Solara,” Will said, cutting his son off again. “You had solid gold in your hands while you went in search of diamonds― just because something sparkles and shines doesn’t mean it holds value in the long run. Same thing goes for the Friesents.”
There was nothing Caleb could do but purse his lips. His expression turned dark but Will Walton did not care one bit. He was far from done.
“The goal of today’s visit was to rekindle you and Amelia Kentwood’s marriage,” Will Walton said. “How did you manage to butcher something so simple? Did you not claim that she was head over heels in love with you?”
“She is!” Caleb exclaimed. Then, he slumped back down. “Or at least, she was.”
“X’el Incorporated had wanted the partnership with Rutherworkes back then badly. For Matteo Montgomery to say no to it, there must be something wrong with the project,” Will Walton then muttered. He brought his finger to his lips. “You’ve seen how he is. That man is a genius in the business world.”
Then, Will coldly gazed at Caleb.
“You were lucky he snuffed out your mistakes before it went past the point of no return,” Will Walton hissed. “Perhaps I was wrong to think that you were ready for this role.”
“I am ready!” Caleb argued.
Irritation surged within his chest. Matteo Montgomery had done it this time. First, he had snatched Amelia from right under Caleb’s nose. He refused to believe that there was nothing going on between them before their divorce if Amelia and Matteo could get engaged so soon after. Now, Matteo had used Carlo as a baseball bat to hit him where it hurt.
Once bitten twice shy. It took Caleb a third time before he realized the pain of it, but now that he felt it, the sting woke him up.
Right then, Caleb’s phone started to ring. Both he and Will Walton turned their attention over to Caleb’s screen just in time to see Kelsie’s name pop up, along with an image of her face that had been set as the contact image.
Will Walton’s face darkened further.
“In the meantime,” he said, “cut things off with the Friesent girl. Friesent Corporation’s stocks have been falling over the last few months and I have no doubt that Horace Hawthorne and Matteo Montgomery are behind this. Maybe even Sullivan Enterprises, with how tightly knit the second Sullivan son is with Matteo Montgomery.”
Caleb’s phone continued to buzz but he made no move to answer the call. He stared at his father, confused.
“But we have collaborations with Friesent Corp.”
“And that is why our profits are also plummeting, don’t you see?” Will Walton snapped. “Must I spell everything out for you? What good are you for, in that case? I might as well u-turn and have Carlo take up your position at the company right this instant!”
As those words were spoken, Kelsie’s call finally cut off. It was silent again.
However, Caleb’s head was all but silent. He gripped his phone tightly, resisting the urge to chuck it out the window in frustration. Yet, something Kelsie Friesent had told him quickly filled his mind, causing a small grin to spread across his face out of his father’s sight.
Yes, Matteo Montgomery was a freak of nature in the business world. However, when it came to family politics and interpersonal relationships, he was just a freak, period. He did not understand any bit of power struggles, and this would be his downfall.
The Friesent family might not be a powerful ally for the Waltons any longer, but Kelsie was still a strong assistant for Caleb. She and Emmeline Hawthorne were the perfect chess pieces for revenge, and unlike Matteo Montgomery, Caleb was perfectly okay with using all the necessary human resources to get what he wanted.

“It’s late. Are you not getting some rest yet?”
Amelia finally tore her eyes away from the laptop screen. They felt sore and heavy, and a yawn would threaten to escape her lips every couple of minutes. However, she was determined to stay awake.
“Almost,” she said. When her eyes landed on Matteo’s sculpted figure, a wistful smile flew onto her face.
He had just emerged from the shower, clad in nothing but a towel that was wrapped around his waist to cover his bottom half. Beads of water ran down the abdomen, his muscles in clear view under the living room’s amber light.
“Carlo has been doing well and there are more and more people interested in this charity, finally,” Amelia said. “I want to finish up the event details so that I can run this through with Danielle tomorrow morning.”

This was a big deal. The more attention Hope for Scholars got, the more funding they would eventually get. Carlo was the first step in the right direction, and with his helpful performance, they would hopefully be able to get more funds for the children in the orphanage to explore their talents and hobbies.
If they received greater funding, they would be able to expand to the children in poorer families who could not afford extracurricular activities outside school. It wasn’t just for learning new hobbies, some of them couldn’t even afford to attend normal classes. This could help the younger generation a great deal.
She groaned and stretched her arms above her head, a sigh escaping her lips when she felt some of the tension leave her body.
All of a sudden, she felt a pair of hands on her shoulders, gently kneading into the spots that badly needed tender love and care. A wave of the cool mint from Matteo’s body wash surged through her senses, and even with her eyes closed, she could feel him standing behind her on the other side of the couch. His thumb pressed the tight knots that had formed, eliciting a moan from her due to the sensation.
“It’s a Saturday tomorrow,” Matteo reminded, his voice gentle. “She isn’t in.”
As he spoke, his fingers worked through all the tense and sore muscles on Amelia’s neck, back, and shoulders. When he grazed a particularly sensitive spot on her neck, she all but melted into his touch.
“You’ve had a long week,” Matteo said.
As his fingers continued to trace down her sensitive skin, Amelia felt heat bloom in her body wherever he touched. Matteo’s voice was as smooth as butter, gliding across her senses and causing her rationality to slip away.
“Since it’s an off day tomorrow, why not we have an off day between ourselves as well? You’ve had a long week.”
“Tomorrow?” Amelia asked. She felt her heart thud against her ribcage, pounding so loudly that she heard it right in her ears. A sultry grin spread across her lips. “We could also enjoy an early rest now.”
She got up from the couch and propped herself on her knees. Her hands, on the other hand, rested against Matteo’s shoulder so that she could lean closer against his ear.
“Perhaps something we could relax with?” Amelia whispered, “Like a nice drink and some time together?”
