Chapter 179: Unwanted Grandparents
Even though Amelia was sure she had never seen this elderly couple before, it wasn’t difficult to put two and two together. They had similar features that reminded Amelia of Joshua and her own father― the nose, the eyes, and even the structure of their faces. But their graying hair and hunched posture gave away more than they would’ve wanted about their age.
Amelia pursed her lips. Those two people must be her paternal grandparents.
Whatever flirtatious aura Aiden wore previously had quickly evaporated, quickly taken over by confusion.
“Do you know them?” Aiden asked.
“I wish I didn’t,” Amelia confessed bitterly under her breath.
Her life had been very peaceful back when it was just her, her father, and her mother. Now that her extended family had reintroduced themselves into her life, everything had turned into a messy tangled web.
A security officer working for the office quickly made his way to the three people. Whatever he said to them, Amelia couldn’t hear as she was out of the range. However, Joshua’s reply was as clear as day.
“I am not leaving!” he yelled, throwing out his hands and causing the security officer to step back in self-defense. “Do you know who I am? My niece is the future wife of your boss. How dare you throw me out?”
The security officer said something else, most likely in an attempt to placate Joshua, but he cared not for anything he had to offer. Instead, Joshua Kentwood’s eyes scoured the hotel lobby before quickly finding where Amelia was. Ignoring the security officer, Joshua and his parents charged straight for Amelia, who hastily rose from the couch.
Unfortunately, she hadn’t got the time to dash out of the office building undetected. He had already locked onto her and it took no more than a few seconds for him to close the distance and end up in front of Amelia.
“What are you doing here?” Amelia asked, blatantly ignoring the curious and calculative stares of the older couple behind Joshua. She was going to pretend they were nothing more than thin air― a just response, considering that was what they did to her and her parents up until recently.
“I think I have been more than kind, haven’t I, Amelia?” Joshua Kentwood immediately said with a sneer, his voice nothing louder than a low hiss. “It’s been more than three days and your pretty little reputation has yet to fall despite the lack of money being sent in. Consider this a kindness shown from me to you, since you’re my niece and all.”
“I never agreed to send you any money,” Amelia immediately quipped back. “Now leave before we call the cops. You’re not a staff or visitor here.”
Joshua smirked. Then, he purposely raised his voice. “But Amelia, aren’t you interested in meeting your grandparents? After all, your father has kept you a secret from them for twenty long years. They were so excited to hear that you’re getting married― to a man like Matteo Montgomery, no less!”
Well, that certainly worked well in Joshua’s favor. Whatever conversation Amelia was trying to keep down low quickly drew the attention of the people streaming in and out of the office. Not everyone had left yet — in fact, the bulk had yet to even head downstairs — and with how loudly Joshua spoke, he quickly had people looking their way.
Wonderful.
Now if Amelia made even the slightest wrong move, her actions would be plastered all over social media and celebrity entertainment sites. She could already see the headlines Lady Vanity would publish at her expense. Her name would be dragged through the mud by people who knew nothing of the full story.
Cued, the elderly couple standing behind Joshua quickly pushed forward as well. The woman grabbed Amelia’s hand, squeezing tightly as though she was the last discounted bento box available at the local supermarket right before closing time. There was no warmth nor love in her eyes― all Amelia could see was hungry greed.
“Amelia, darling,” the old woman sobbed. “I am your grandmother, Martha.” She then nodded at her husband. “This is your grandfather, Lewis. We never knew that your father had you. Look at you, all grown up now!”
Lewis Kentwood, as he was introduced, nodded once at Amelia. He then turned his attention to Aiden, his eyes brightening significantly.
“And you must be Matteo!” the old man said with a beam, happily grabbing Aiden’s hand to shake. “It’s so nice to finally meet you. Thank you for taking such great care of our granddaughter―”
Unfortunately for him, Lewis Kentwood grabbed onto nothing. The hand he was reaching for had been quickly withdrawn, as though Aiden was dodging a viperous snake― though he might as well had been.
His expression was cool and distant. Cruel, almost. It looked as though Aiden was looking down upon them. With their huge height difference, that was the case literally as well. Even Amelia widened her eyes in surprise at the sudden frosty expression. She was so used to seeing Aiden’s cheeky, mischievous grin that she had forgotten he was someone equally as dangerous.
“You have the wrong person,” Aiden said. “I am not Matteo Montgomery.”
“You’re not Matteo Montgomery?” Lewis echoed.
Then, before he could react, Martha Kentwood came rushing forward with more speed than a woman her age normally had. She bumped Aiden to one side, and as he was caught by surprise, Aiden stumbled a little from the force.
“If you’re not Matteo Montgomery, what are you doing standing so close to my granddaughter?!” Martha barked. “She is engaged to be wed to Matteo Montgomery, the wealthiest young man in Solara! Who are you to dare go so close to her!”
Using her plump body, Martha wedged herself in between Amelia and Aiden as though she were an immovable force.
“Calm down, Martha,” Lewis said, consoling his wife. “We have seen our fair share of sewer rats dreaming of getting a bite of gourmet cheese. This is just like the telenovelas you love.”
“A sewer rat― Pardon me?!” Aiden repeated, flabbergasted.

If it were a different case, Amelia would’ve burst out laughing. Instead, she stamped down the curve of her lips which were threatening to rise, and shimmied out of the little circle Martha, Lewis, and Joshua had created around her, dodging Joshua’s hand when he tried to make a grab at her wrist.
“That’s enough,” Amelia said. “Long lost family or not, the truth of the matter is that I don’t know the two of you,” she said as she looked at the old couple, “and I barely know you.” She then glared hard at Joshua.
She continued, “I have never met you two in my life, and my father has never spoken of you. If you’re so keen on reuniting, perhaps you would like to meet with my father first. After all, he is your son.”
