Chapter 185: Missing Person
“That’s better than nothing,” Amelia said, shooting Matteo a comforting smile. “You worked hard today. Sorry that I brought you trouble.”
“You didn’t do anything; this was your conniving relatives, to begin with,” Matteo corrected her gently. He reached out his hand and squeezed it to comfort her. “Don’t worry, I’ll fix it.”
Aiden’s face twisted at the display of affection, and he sunk further into the sofa. “How will you fix it though? My mom has already given me an earful about the falling stock prices. Don’t say I didn’t warn you― she’ll gun for you next!”
“But it’s not Matteo’s fault at all,” Amelia said, bewildered. “In fact, you have the least blame― you weren’t even there to begin with!”
Matteo wanted to scoff. Catherine blaming him for whatever misfortune that happened was nothing new. Forget falling stocks, if a volcano erupted at a holiday destination she wanted to go to, she would have found some way to tie it back to Matteo’s actions and fault him for them.
He was long used to it from now on. If it weren’t for what his father had kept from him, he wouldn’t have swallowed his pride and bowed his head for so many years.
“I don’t need you to warn me.” Matteo rolled his eyes. “I know how to handle it.”
Before Aiden could argue further, Amelia’s phone interrupted their disagreement with a loud ring.
Dimitri was calling.
Suddenly, Amelia had a bad feeling about things.
“Dimitri, what’s the matter?”
“Your father is missing,” Dimitri said without preamble. “I checked the security cameras, and he slipped out of the house half an hour ago. I called him, but he hasn’t picked up. Normally, this wouldn’t be a cause for concern, but with the release of such a defamatory article, I’m worried he might do something rash to retaliate.”
Amelia’s heart sank to her shoes. “Crap. Thanks for telling me, Dimitri, I’ll go and look for him now.”
She hung up to meet Matteo’s curious gaze. “My dad is missing. Dimitri thinks he might be confronting my Uncle.”
“Then we have no time to waste. I’ll drive you around so we can find him,” Matteo said grimly.
Amelia nodded frantically, ready to sprint out the front door to begin the search.
“What about me?” Aiden protested. “Are you just going to leave me here in your house?”
“Of course not,” Matteo raised an eyebrow. “You have a motorbike, don’t you? Make yourself useful and look for Amelia’s father!”
With that parting shot, the three of them left the house. Aiden sped away on his motorbike first, while Amelia and Matteo followed after in his car.
“Aiden has no idea where to begin searching,” Amelia fretted as she saw Aiden’s back grow smaller in the distance. “How will he find my father?”
“He won’t, because we will,” Matteo said firmly as he drove. “We’ll search the area around Dimitri’s home first. Knowing your uncle, he might be staying near your father for a chance to ambush him while he’s unaware. I’ll get Ronan to hire some external help as well.”
Amelia nodded. Matteo’s words made sense. While Matteo sped to Dimitri’s house, Amelia called her father, only to frown when the call went to voicemail.
“Still nothing,” she said to Matteo, gripping her phone tightly with her fingers, her heart fraught with worry. Please let her father be on an errand to buy groceries, or simply walking at the park to clear his mind…
Unfortunately, her hopes were not to be. They arrived at Dimitri’s home and drove around the block and the surrounding areas, but there was no sight of any altercation. Desperate, she even got out of the car to search on foot, in case her father had been dragged and beaten in an alleyway.
She found nothing but judgemental eyes, as people looked at her suspiciously when she asked if anyone fitting her father’s description had been in the area. Amelia was now a familiar face to everyone in Sol City, and her recent family drama had not helped improve her reputation among ordinary people.
“This isn’t working― there’s simply too much space to search,” Matteo said with a clenched jaw.
“We can’t give up,” Amelia said, frazzled. “If you’re tired, you can rest first― I’ll still look―”
“Amelia,” Matteo grabbed her arm tightly and pulled her close, his other hand palming her cheek. His eyes bore into hers, wordlessly holding her attention captive.
“Amelia, breathe. Calm down. I have an idea.”
Amelia sucked in a deep breath. “What is it?”

“Rather than running around like headless chickens, I propose we wait at the hospital where Lewis Kentwood is admitted. If your father is indeed looking for his estranged family, that’ll be the first place he would go, since it was reported in the article.”
“You’re right,” Amelia said, internally cursing herself for jumping the gun in her panic. “I didn’t think it through― Oh god, I wasted so much time―”
“Everything will be fine,” Matteo’s low voice rumbled in his chest, his steadiness a comfort to her shaky nerves. “Let’s go.”
They went back to the car, and Matteo all but abused the accelerator to get to the hospital in record time, and Amelia all but slammed her hands against the receptionist’s desk, startling the receptionist who was on her phone. Matteo hovered behind her like a protective devil.
“Can you give me the room number for Lewis Kentwood?”
“Miss, I cannot release confidential information…” The nurse, Callie, raised her head impatiently, but then her voice trailed off as she realized who she was speaking to.
It was the two people in the article she was reading about! Amelia Hawthorne and Matteo Montgomery!
“The number?” Matteo prompted when it seemed like the nurse had lost all ability to talk.
“Right!” Callie quickly mumbled a room number, her heart racing in shock at their unexpected presence. Since this infamous couple was here in front of her, the article calling Amelia Hawthorne a heartless bitch must be untrue.
After all, if she didn’t care, the famed heiress would not be standing in front of Callie with her temples damp with sweat.
Amelia wanted to dash for the room, but Matteo held her arm. He still had one more question to ask.
“Was there anyone else that came to visit him?” Matteo growled out.
“Yes!” Normally, the nurse would never reply to such an invasive question, but Matteo’s domineering aura was too much for her to resist. She still wanted to live till tomorrow!
“There was a middle-aged man that also came to look for him… I think he said his name was Michael?”
