Chapter 187: Call the Director!
“Yes!” the same nurse squeaked, darting out of the room while pulling his phone out of his pocket.
“You can’t just barge in here and act like you own the place―!”
Matteo said nothing and instead, chose to ignore Martha Kentwood. He watched with silent amusement as Joshua and Lewis shared a look before Lewis suddenly clutched himself on the chest, stumbling back into the bed.
“Lewis!” Martha called out in fright, rushing back to her loving husband’s side.
“My chest…”
“Have a look at his condition,” Matteo coldly instructed the doctors.
Immediately, the doctors standing behind Matteo all rushed to Lewis Kentwood’s bedside.
“Wait a minute―!” Martha Kentwood tried to say but was cut off by a nurse.
“Ma’am, please wait at one side,” she said before leading — in actuality, forcing — Martha to one corner where Joshua, Amelia, and Matteo were. Then, the nurse pulled the curtains close.
Instantly, a thin layer of perspiration formed across Martha’s face. Unlike her son, she was unable to keep her expression in check. She looked worriedly at Joshua, grabbing his arm and giving him a questioning glance.
Joshua said nothing. His lips were pressed into a tight line as he grimly looked at the curtains that shielded Lewis Kentwood from view.
“Mr. Montgomery!”
The new voice caused the remaining people in the room to turn to the door. A young man stood there, smiling broadly as he walked in. When his eyes landed on Amelia, he paused in his steps, his eyes widening for a few seconds with recognition before he nodded his head in greeting.
“Amelia,” he said, surprised.
She hadn’t expected to see him again, but she supposed it would be impossible to avoid him forever. After all, Benji Wales belonged to the Wales family, a leading company in the medical industry. On top of that, he was also one of Caleb’s old friends.
Amelia didn’t recall much about him. She never met any of Caleb’s friends from the wealthy circle. The only time she had seen them was at the club where she overheard their conversation, forever altering the course of her life.
“Mr. Wales,” Matteo greeted, drawing Benji’s lingering gaze from Amelia to himself. “Thank you for coming.”
“It’s an honor to meet you, Mr. Montgomery,” Benji returned. He wore a professional business smile, shaking Matteo’s hand. “What can I do for you?”
It didn’t take long before the curtains were drawn again, omitting the need for Matteo to reply instantly. The doctors emerged, and Lewis Kentwood sat on the side of the bed rather than laid down under the covers. His back was hunched and his shoulders were slumped, looking like a kid who had just gotten reprimanded.
Matteo said nothing― he only looked their way with a raised eyebrow, and immediately, one of the doctors stepped forward and spoke.
“We did a thorough check on Mr. Kentwood,” he said. “There are no medical issues with his heart.”
“So he feigned a heart attack just now,” Matteo said. There was distinctively no curiosity present in his tone and his words were spoken as though they were a fact.
“That and throughout his medical history,” the doctor continued, flipping through the papers on his clipboard, “the EKG did not show any evidence of previous heart attacks.”
“Then pray tell,” Matteo continued, folding his arms across his chest, “what was Mr. Kentwood hospitalized for?”
More flipping sounds could be heard before the room was filled with silence.
The doctor gulped heavily, his voice turning softer. “A… heart attack.”
“This is ridiculous!” Joshua Kentwood was the first to speak, his voice piercing through the air. “My father is a patient. Who are you to treat him like a criminal?”
However, the volume of his voice did nothing to command attention. Benji Wales had his attention solely on the doctor and Matteo, and he seemed deep in thought. He rubbed his chin before turning to Matteo.
“I will look into this matter,” Benji said with a frown. “Admitting a patient into the hospital when he has a clean bill of health… That is…”
“Unforgivable,” Matteo finished for him. “It does make me wonder if the hospital is so desperate for patients that they will admit anyone and everyone who claims to have an issue or two. What about the rest of the patients who are in actual desperate need of these beds?”

“Rest assured, Mr. Montgomery, I will speak to the doctors and nurses involved,” Benji said. He then shook his head. “No, I will speak with all our staff members. There will not be a second time.”
“Good,” Matteo said. “Do also check who else passed down the instructions. I doubt a simple doctor or nurse would be so brave as to do something like that without explicit permission or instruction from someone else.”
“Of course, Mr. Montgomery,” Benji said.
“Additionally,” Matteo said, “I would like a copy of the CCTV recording of this ward.”
Joshua, Martha, and Lewis Kentwood’s eyes collectively bulged out.
“CCTV?!”
Matteo almost couldn’t resist the urge to roll his eyes. He raised a single index finger, gesturing to the small black machine tucked in the corner of the room. It had a perfect view of everything, from the door all the way to the bed― the only thing out of view would be when the curtains were drawn. Everything that had happened here was recorded.
Benji wrinkled his eyebrows. “With all due respect, Mr. Montgomery, the footage is private―”
However, with one look from Matteo, he ate his words.
“Yes,” he said instead of finishing his sentence. “It will be forwarded to your email shortly.”
“Joshua…” Martha said, her voice wobbly as she clung to her son’s arm. She spoke very softly, but due to how closely they were standing, Amelia was able to barely hear whatever she said. “What are we going to do?”
“Relax, Mom,” Joshua replied. In contrast, he was much louder and unafraid of eavesdroppers. In fact, he met Matteo’s eyes with a challenging gaze of his own. “A rotten footage won’t prove anything.”
“Fret not,” Matteo said evenly, maintaining eye contact. He dug through the pocket of his jacket and pulled out a small pen. “In case the court finds it insufficient, I also have a recording of our entire conversation, from start to finish.”
This time, Joshua’s face paled. Martha and Lewis Kentwood looked faint.
A small smirk uncharacteristically tugged at Matteo’s lips. Sarcastically, he continued, “I certainly hope that is enough to prove something.”
