Chapter 197: It Could Be A Lie!
Emmeline’s words echoed throughout the hall. She did not scream, but everyone heard her loud and clear. There was a moment of brief silence as they digested her words.
Then, all hell broke loose. The hall erupted into pandemonium, as though a horde of ravenous zombies had entered the hall. Screams of shock and dismay filled the air, and people began to stand up to get a closer look at Emmeline’s supposed pregnancy.
Amelia should have spoken up to control the crowd, but her mind had fizzled at Emmeline’s words. She stared at her cousin in disbelief, then at Matteo.
“Pregnant? You must be joking!”
“I would never joke about this,” Emmeline said loud enough for everyone to hear. “If I wasn’t a hundred percent sure, I would never dare to interrupt your wedding!”
“You lie! I knew it, I knew you wouldn’t miss the chance to ruin Millie’s big day!” Amelia’s father stood up and shook an angry fist in Emmeline’s direction, his face a blotchy red that Amelia was half-afraid he would suddenly suffer a stroke.
He then turned to glare at her grandfather, pointing an angry finger at his face.
“Horace Hawthorne, didn’t you say that your granddaughter would behave herself? Is this your idea of behaving? And you, Annalise, is this how you educate your daughter? By faking pregnancy scares to ruin weddings? What a homewrecker!”
The word homewrecker seemed to ring in the air, and everyone began to murmur to their fellow guests. Annalise’s face purpled in anger as she and her daughter were insulted by a country bumpkin, out of all people! If she had things her way, someone lowly Michael Kentwood would have never entered the venue.
Annalise’s eyes then darted towards her daughter and Matteo, and then Amelia standing next to her. Suddenly, she realized why her daughter had been seemingly so benign the closer it got to the wedding.
It turned out that she was merely biding her time!
Suddenly, she recalled the incident of Emmeline’s nudes. She had been intimate with Matteo.
Annalise’s mind quickly connected the dots, and she began to defend her daughter.
“It takes two hands to clap, Mr. Kentwood! If my daughter is indeed pregnant, then Matteo must take responsibility. Surely you cannot be expecting her to raise a child alone when he’s more than capable of providing support!”
“That’s if she’s actually telling the truth!” Michael Kentwood bellowed. “Who knows if she’s actually really pregnant, or if that’s just a beer belly from one too many late nights! It could even be a tiny basket attached to her waist for all we know!”
The crowd tittered against their will, their eyes riveted to the unfolding drama in front of them.
Was Emmeline Hawthorne actually pregnant?
Meanwhile, Horace Hawthorne’s eyes glittered with tears. But unlike the tears of pride and joy when he watched Amelia walk down the aisle in a dress Elaine would have loved, his tears were now of devastation as he stared at Emmeline in disbelief.
Part of him genuinely hoped that she would know better than to interrupt Amelia’s wedding, especially when he had already made it clear what was at stake. Yet, Emmeline had not listened to him!
“Emmeline… I’m so disappointed in you. I’ve already warned you about the consequences of your behavior,” Horace said. “Do you wish to be disowned?”
“No!” Annalise screeched out loud before her daughter could react. “Dad, you can’t disown her now! Emmeline is pregnant― she needs your support, not your ire!”
“That’s assuming she’s even telling the truth!” Michael Kentwood pointed out. “Forgive me for doubting your daughter’s moral integrity, seeing that she’s perfectly capable of murdering mine on a family holiday. I highly doubt that a woman so eager to kill would be actually blessed with a child.”
Michael’s words sent another shockwave through the halls as guests digested this revelation. Emmeline tried to kill Amelia?
Meanwhile, Amelia felt her heart calm at her father’s words. He had a point. There was no need to jump to conclusions since Emmeline’s words were nothing more than mere speculations at the present.
Horace could only steel his heart at the reminder of Emmeline’s past actions. He had given Emmeline so many chances, only for her to squander all of them away as though they were pennies tossed into a pool.
In the end, he had to uphold his end of the bargain. Emmeline had forced his hand.
“Emmeline, I hereby disown you from the Hawthorne family. From this day onwards, you’ll have nothing to do with us!”
“No! Father, please, reconsider!” Annalise’s knees buckled and she grabbed at her father-in-law’s arm with fervent desperation, her nails digging crescents into his papery skin. “My daughter can’t be a single mother! She needs your support!”
“Mom, stop begging grandfather,” Emmeline said, her voice choking with tears. “I know I don’t have a place in his heart any longer, but I must make things clear― I did not lie! I am two months pregnant and Matteo is the father!”
“Grandfather, if you don’t believe me, look through my clutch. I have the ultrasound photos and the medical report inside for you to read for yourself!”

With trembling hands, Horace grabbed Emmeline’s clutch bag and unzipped it. The hall of guests seemed to hold their breaths as he pulled out a series of ultrasound photographs and a sealed brown envelope with the hospital name on it.
Amelia felt her heart drop to her feet.
“This proves nothing,” Michael Kentwood said, snatching the ultrasound images from Horace’s hands. “You could have gotten this from any pregnant woman.”
Meanwhile, Horace ripped open the envelope to reveal the medical report with Emmeline’s details right on top. His eyes frantically scanned its contents, the words whirling around in his head as he saw the findings.
There was no denying it. Emmeline was indeed pregnant. Her attending doctor was none other than the Hawthorne family’s own private doctor, which meant that it was most likely the truth. After all, no one working for his family would dare falsify such a report to lie to him.
The papers fell from his shaking hands, down on the table.
“This… this…” Horace gasped for breath. “This is outrageous!”
